Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop is hailed as one of the greatest anime series of our time. Its balance of action, western-themes, noir, and humor, combined with jazzy tunes made it an instant cult favorite. We’ve heard reports that it could live again in the form of a live-action series. That recently came true when Netflix announced they would be behind the new live-action series with André Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio acting as show runners and executive producers. Shinichirō Watanabe, who created the anime series, will be acting as a consultant on the show.

And now Netflix has confirmed that John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, and Alex Hassell have been cast in the Cowboy Bebop series. More on the report below.

Indiana Jones Crystal Skull Steven Spielberg Harrison Ford

When Roma took home three Oscars (Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography), it showed that Netflix was able to be more than just a streaming service. And with other services like Hulu and Amazon also producing and releasing their own films, it’s very likely other studios are going to have to compete with them during awards season. But with the times changing, there are those who would like things to remain the same. At least, in terms of how people should see movies and categorize them.

One of those people is Steven Spielberg. You know, the guy who gave us films like E.T., Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List. The director isn’t exactly a fan of Netflix’s approach to releasing films, and will now be taking his grievances to the Academy this coming April to talk about how streaming and traditionally released films should be treated. More on the report here below.

Netflix Takes the Oscars (image Courtesy of Vulture.com)

Netflix had an outsized presence at the 2019 Oscars despite their unconventional way of distributing films.(image Courtesy of Vulture.com)

The 2019 Oscars or Academy Awards were like no other. There was a superhero film up for Best Picture and a superhero film actually won for Best Animated Feature. Among top films to come away a winner this year was an Alfonso Curaón film named Roma. It scored an industry first in that despite the fact that it was available for viewers to stream on Netflix even as it was still playing in theaters, Roma was not only a serious contender for competitive awards like Best Director and Best Picture, it actually won three of the four awards it was nominated for.

Turn Up Charlie

Idris Elba is many things. He’s faced off against criminals, demi-gods, and the elements. But if there is one thing we haven’t seen him as, it’s a babysitter. And Netflix is going to give its subscribers the chance to see a gentler side of the actor.

A trailer has been released for Turn Up Charlie, which will see Elba bring an edge to the family friendly series. In it he plays a washed-up DJ who doesn’t have his life in order, but will get a chance to straighten things out when an old friend offers him an opportunity. But it’s not the one he thinks will raise his stock as a DJ. No, he will have to babysit her daughter. And the reluctant DJ takes her up on the offer only to find out that it could be a life-changing experience. Check out the trailer below.
