UARS

So, by the way, apparently a school bus-sized now-dead satellite that’s been orbiting the Earth for 20 years is about to fall from the sky this weekend and plummet into the United States.

According to NASA, the 6 1/2-ton Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite should have fallen to Earth this afternoon, but it’s traveling slower than originally thought. Therefore, those of us here in the United States can expect to be hit with debris some time tomorrow.

Paul McCartney The Love We Make

In the month following the 9/11 attacks Paul McCartney organized the Concert For New York City, an all-star benefit held at NYC’s Madison Square Garden. Filmmakers Albert Maysles and Bradley Kaplan filmed the former Beatle making preparations, meeting with fellow musicians, and walking through the streets of New York City days after the attack. Nothing was done with the footage until now.

The Love We Make is a 94-minute documentary created from the footage shot 10 years ago and will make its debut tonight at 10:55PM ET/PT on Showtime. See below for subsequent air dates and times.

The Concert For New York City was recorded live on October 20, 2001 and was released to DVD. Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Kid Rock, Bill Joel, and The Who are among the many who performed at the charity concert to benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund, an organization whose mission is to fight poverty in New York City which set up a special 9/11 fund immediately after the attacks. The 6-hour The Concert For New York City will air in its entirety on VH1 on today, Sunday, September 11, from 4PM to 10PM EST. You can also watch it live tonight on the Robin Hood Relief Fund’s Facebook page.

I Hurricane NY

We here at the main GoD headquarters in the New York City evacuation “Zone C” area are bracing for Hurricane Irene, which is set to hit tomorrow (Sunday) morning. As we get ready to shut down for the night, the seriously heavy rains and winds have already begun, so if things are quiet here at GeeksofDoom.com tomorrow, chances are either the power/internet went out and/or we’re busy bailing water.

In the meantime, here’s some gems I learned from the stellar round-the-clock local news coverage of Hurricane Irene:

— Sheepshead Bay is a bay, that’s how it got its name.
— Do not try to stand outside in the hurricane, even though you see the news reporters doing it [they are immune to the affects of harsh weather].
— Hurricanes are bad.
— The surf is getting frothier and frothier.
— Water is wet.
— We’re screwed.

Ever dreamed of eating the foods of Westeros, the fantastical lands created by author George R.R. Martin for his A Song of Ice and Fire book series that we’ll soon be seeing in HBO’s new series, Game of Thrones?

Well, now some lucky people are going to get the chance to do just that, with the announcement of a special food truck being sent out in a very creative new promotion for the show. And if that wasn’t cool enough, the dishes will be created by none other than renowned chef and head judge on Bravo’s Top Chef, Tom Colicchio.

Be sure to click on over to the other side to learn more about where you can find these food trucks and to check out a couple of videos as well!
