Week of Geek: Green Lantern

Green LanternGreen Lantern
Directed by Martin Campbell
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard
Release date: June 17, 2011

I went into Green Lantern expecting a solid summer action movie and that’s exactly what I got. Therefore, I don’t get a lot of the hatred directed towards this film. Critics have been giving this long-gestating DC comic book adaptation a regular blanket party and for most of the same reasons that those same critics spazzed out over Thor. Personally I’ve never been a fan of the character and outside of some episodes of Super Friends and the occasional glance at an issue of the comic, I don’t even know that much about the Green Lantern. After seeing the movie, it’s evident I have some catching up to do. Good thing I have access to some of his recent appearances in animated DTV movie form.

New ‘Green Lantern’ Trailer Delves Into The History Of The Corps

Green Lantern posters 1 & 2

The marketing campaign for the upcoming Green Lantern movie started off sluggish late last year with an interesting but frustratingly earthbound teaser trailer. Now of course raising awareness of the Emerald Avenger’s big screen debut was always going to be a difficult task; the Green Lantern is one of the most iconic characters in all of the DC Universe, but he’s not on the same level of instant recognizability as his fellow DCU stalwarts Superman and Batman. A lot of lower-tiered DCU heroes and heroines have always had that problem, as the negative fan reaction to David E. Kelley’s failed Wonder Woman TV pilot most recently proved.

Not much is known about the plot of the Green Lantern movie except that it’s an origin story focusing on Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds, barely edging out Bradley Cooper for the coveted role) and it concerns an intergalactic threat known only as Parallax. Somehow it involves Blake Lively looking hot, a very David Crosby-looking Peter Sarsgaard turning into something that resembles the veiny-headed mutants from Beneath the Planet of the Apes, and lots and lots of aliens bearing power rings. Any studio would be understandably nervous.

Well, if you love trailers, today is the day for you. Many highly anticipated titles are showing off how they look, and the biggest of them all might just be Green Lantern.

A sneak peek at the trailer was revealed recently, but now you can see the whole thing. And judging by how it looks, you get the feeling people are either going to be very excited for the DC Comics adaptation, or be pretty underwhelmed. It will all really depend upon how you feel about computerized enhancements.

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, a pilot who discovers an alien crash site and is given the all-powerful ring, making him a member of the Green Lanterns. The trailer isn’t shy about showing off the world they’ve created, as well as the many Green Lanterns we’ll see, a brief peek at Sinestro (Mark Strong), and solid look at Dr. Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard).

Be sure to click on over to the other side now to read a synopsis for the movie and to check out the new trailer for Green Lantern. Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments below!

‘Green Lantern’ Wraps Shooting; Writers Already Well At Work On Sequel

A couple of days ago, comic book writer and talent behind many Green Lantern books announced via his Twitter account that filming of the movie adaption starring Ryan Reynolds had officially wrapped.

Despite the fact that the movie has yet to prove its worth at the box office, that’s not preventing Warner Brothers from taking steps toward setting up the potential sequel. A couple of months ago the studio hired Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim to begin work on a treatment of the script, and now Michael Goldenberg has been brought in to write as well. Goldberg performed a rewrite on the script for the first movie from a treatment by Berlanti, Guggenheim, and Green, so this appears to be their way of doing things.

Goldenberg has previously penned Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as well as Peter Pan (2003), Contact, and Bed of Roses.

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

SDCC 2010: Green Lantern Panel: Ryan ReynoldsThe cast and crew of the Green Lantern movie was on hand at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the upcoming film, due out in 2011. Also, the very first footage from the film was show (see description of it here below).

Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Geoff Johns, decked out in Green Lantern gear, was introduced first to get things rolling and said the week he spent on set was the best experience of his life. Considering Johns’ history working with legendary director Richard Donner, that’s saying a lot.

“When I first worked for Richard Donner, we talked about making Green Lantern and one of the producers said ‘Can we do the movie without the ring?’ and right there I thought: “There’s never going to be a Green Lantern movie,” said Johns, who added that it’s been incredible to see what director Martin Campbell and crew have done.

The costume itself wasn’t shown, which Campbell described as being lines of musculature. “A lot of thought has been given to it and it is a work of progress,” Campbell said.
