The Son
Season 1 DVD
Starring Pierce Brosnan, Paola Nuñez, Jess Weixler, Zahn McClarnon, Elizabeth Frances, Henry Garrett

The Son is the story of Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan), orphaned and enslaved as a teenager when a Comanche tribe wiped out his family, who thrived with said eventual Comanche family to grow into a wealthy Texas cattle and oil baron. The season toggles between Eli’s boyhood and his life as the cynical patriarch whose thirst for power overrides his empathy (and our sympathy).

Movie Review: The World’s End

The World's EndThe World’s End
Directed by Edgar Wright
Written by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg
Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Martin Freeman
Focus Features
Release Date: August 23, 2012 (U.S.)

“We wanna be free! We wanna be free to do what we wanna do. And we wanna get loaded. And we wanna have a good time. And that’s what we are gonna do. We are gonna have a good time… We are gonna have a party.”

That little speech – abbreviated slightly from its original version – plays a large role in defining the theme of The World’s End, the eagerly-anticipated closing chapter in the “Blood and Ice Cream” (or “Three Flavours Cornetto”) trilogy that director Edgar Wright and his frequent star and co-writer Simon Pegg created a decade ago with the romantic zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead and continued in 2007 with the blazing police action drama spoof Hot Fuzz. The speech was first heard in the 1966 biker movie classic The Wild Angels and was given by Peter Fonda’s character Heavenly Blues. I recognized those lines the moment they were played on the soundtrack.

The World’s End is, I believe, about the futility of trying to recapture your lost youth when you never lost it to begin with. But it is also about how when most of us enter adulthood we take it upon ourselves to abandon our youthful identities completely and replace them with domesticity and responsibility. The five main characters of The World’s End never learned to reconcile the buttoned-down, easy-going side of their personalities with the spirited sense of fun and friendship that defined them as people growing up. The lead character decided to remain a child forever but instead grew into a sad and bedraggled wretch of a human being while his four best friends became hollow shells of what they once were.

Mars Attacks! Blu-ray DVDMars Attacks!
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Tim Burton
Starring Jack Nicholson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Jack Black, Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Glenn Close
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment
Release Date September 7, 2010

If anything can be learned from Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!, I believe it is this: Any movie that is based off a card game is not headed to anywhere good.

You can pretty much gather the plotline of the movie just by reading the title, but just for sake of the review, let’s go through the basics. When UFOs are discovered flying toward planet Earth, The President and Washington’s top scientists debate on what their next course of action should be. Believing that the visitors are a friendly bunch, the President sends our military to greet them as they land. With the whole world watching, aliens show their true colors and they don’t appear to be in the mood to give hugs. Now, as Mars attacks, it will take an unlikely hero to step up and defend the Earth from being destroyed.

Release date: February 19, 2010

“I’ve been having this nightmare. A real swinger of a nightmare, too.”
— Major Bennett Marco from The Manchurian Candidate

“Have you ever heard the expression “Let sleeping dogs lie”? Sometimes you’re better off not knowing.”
— Jake Gittes from Chinatown

“Sorry, I’ve just got one question: Whose map is Britain using when it completely ignores the United Nations and decides to invade Iraq? Or do you think it’s more diplomatic to bend the will of a superpower and politely take part in Vietnam the Sequel?”
— Tessa Quayle from The Constant Gardner

The Ghost Writer: Prisoner Of Convictions

The consequences of our transgressions are the stains that cannot be cleansed away. The past is the vessel that we cherish and regret with equal measure. Art can be the ultimate catharsis when dealing with the past or attempting to get through the present depending on what one’s situation is. Imagine what life would be like if we could write are our memoirs with the aid of a ghost writer who believes everything we say. Unfortunately, what would happen if the ghost writer goes to check all the information you provide? Your life would take on different meaning — more honesty might expose you to disgrace or more ridicule.

Full Trailer For ‘Percy Jackson & The Olympians’ Released

Percy Jackson & the Olympians

Up until now, we had only seen a mediocre teaser trailer for Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, but now the first full trailer is online and it definitely gives you a better idea of what the movie is looking to become.

The movie is directed by Chris Columbus, who also directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This is fitting, as The Lightning Thief has a definite Harry Potter vibe to it, only instead of wizardry, we have Greek mythology. It’s definitely aimed at a teen/family audience, but also looks like it could be a lot of fun for all ages. The story follows a teenage boy who discovers that he is the son of god of the sea, Poseidon, and has to help to locate the lightning bolt of Zeus before a war breaks out amongst the gods.

Lightning Thief

The first teaser trailer for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone director Chris Columbus‘s new movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has been released online, and it looks fairly interesting. The property is the first of a new possible franchise based on the five-book Percy Jackson & The Olympians series. It follows a young boy who discovers that he’s the half-human son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. This sets off an adventure that sees him trying to save his mother while attempting to locate the stolen lightning bolt of Zeus, and even trying to prevent a war among the gods.

The trailer is just a teaser and doesn’t show much, but what you do see is compelling. To sum it up, we see the young boy Percy Jackson (played by Logan Lerman) enters the Empire State Building in New York City and presses a mysterious Omega symbol button in the elevator. This brings him up as high as it will go before magically shooting through the top of the building in a beam of light, and bringing him to the base of Mount Olympus itself.

Click over to the other side to see the trailer and find out who’s part of the massive cast, if you do not know already.

Mamma Mia! Blu-ray DVDMamma Mia! The Movie
Blu-ray
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd
Starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release date: December 16, 2008

I have a confession to make that might be a bit embarrassing. I am a closet musical fan. I think it might have been my exposure to Disney cartoons as a child and my love for impromptu dance sequences that attributed to this love but I am a sucker for them. So, it was only natural that, when given the opportunity, I took the chance watch and review Mamma Mia! The Movie for Blu-ray.

Based on the extremely popular Broadway show, Mamma Mia! The Movie tells the story of Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried. Sophie is about to be married and her only wish is to be walked down the aisle by her father. The problem is, he left before she was born and her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) has never talked about him. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie decides to invite her father to the wedding in the guise of Donna. Narrowing down the potential candidates for her father based on Donna’s diary, she invites Harry (Colin Firth), Sam (Pierce Brosnan), and Bill (Stellan Sarsgard) to the wedding and knows for sure that she will know who her father is just by looking at them. Obviously Donna finds out as old feelings resurface and hilarity and singing ensue.
