Prometheus Alien

While on the promotional tour for The Martian, director Ridley Scott didn’t exactly confirm that Prometheus 2 wold be his next film, but said that his next film would be a part of the Alien franchise.

During a recent interview, the director slipped that his next film will actually be titled Alien: Paradise Lost. This would certainly conflict with the reports that Prometheus 2 would be his next film. This comes off of months of rumors and speculation as to what his next project would be. While much of the news has been focused on Prometheus 2, Scott says the sequel isn’t his next film, but he is still planning for at least three more Prometheus sequels. Instead the director will go back to the film franchise that started it all, Alien.

Prometheus Header

No matter how you feel about Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, a sequel has been under development for a couple of years. The prequel to Scott’s Alien franchise focuses on a human space expedition to help understand their origins. While we still don’t know much about the plot or if Noomi Rapace will reprise her role as Elizabeth Shaw for the sequel, Scott will return to direct Prometheus 2, and now he has confirmed that Michael Fassbender will reprise his role as the android David.

Ridley Scott

As Ridley Scott completes his work on the upcoming The Martian, reports are suggesting that Prometheus 2 could be his next project. The sequel would be the follow-up to his Alien prequel which saw Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender flying towards the Engineer’s homeworld in an attempt to find out why they want to destroy humanity. Earlier this month, it was being reported that Scott would actual begin filming the movie next January, although it wasn’t clear how this might affect production for Neill Blomkamp‘s Alien 5.

Now we are learning that Prometheus 2 could have a huge affect on the production of the next Alien movie. More on this story below.

Prometheus Ridley Scott with Noomi Rapace

The ending for Prometheus left the door open for sequels and a possible direct bridge to the Alien franchise. But because of its lackluster performance at the box office, development on the sequel has been slow going. Then came word that Neill Blomkamp would direct Alien 5, stirring up rumors that Prometheus 2 could also be on its way to actually going into production.

While it is far from a confirmation, a new interview reveals that Ridley Scott may actually start shooting Prometheus 2 in January. More on this story below.

Neill Blomkamp Alien Concept Art Header

The internet caught fire when District 9 and Elysium, and director Neill Blomkamp shared some concept art for a movie set in Ridley Scott‘s 1979 classic Alien universe, leading many to think he was, or at one point had been, working on a new movie in the franchise.

More recently he confirmed that he’s always wanted to make an Alien movie, and when there was some down time during post production on his latest movie, Chappie, he began working on the concept art, inspired in part by one of his Chappie stars and original Alien bad-ass Sigourney Weaver. Even more surprising, he revealed that if he wanted to make the movie, he could.

Now it appears, believe it or not, that that’s exactly what Blomkamp is planning to do for his next project.

Prometheus: Fire and Stone #1 reviewPrometheus: Fire and Stone #1
Written by Paul Tobin
Art by Juan Ferreyra
Letters by Nate Piekos
Covers by David Palumbo
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: September 10, 2014
Cover Price: $3.50

The command ship Helios drifts through deep space on its way to LV-223. They are on a quest to find, perhaps, the origins of life on Earth. With a full crew of scientists, and soldiers, the ship lumbers towards what is supposed to be a desert moon. Much to the crew’s surprise, they land in the middle of a dense rainforest that holds terrors beyond their imagination.

There’s a problem with deep space: it’s boring. Space is huge. It’s hugely, bigly huge. Did you ever take car trips with your family, and drive through the so-called “fly-over states” and learn why they’re fly-over states? Space is one big fly-over state. Prometheus: Fire and Stone #1 is hobbled early on by the vastness in that where there is nothing to do, there is nothing to read about. The story begins near enough to the landing that we meet some of the crew, and figure out what their objective is, but there was still a lot of nothing happening. So, long review short, the beginning bit is tedious.

15 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Alien 3: The Official Movie Novelization’

Alien 3: The Official Movie Novelization

Alien 3. David Fincher’s 1992 film takes place right after the events of Aliens. An escape pod from the USS Sulaco crash-lands on a prison-run refinery planet, killing everyone aboard except Lieutenant Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). Unknown to Ripley, an alien organism was also aboard, which then begins killing the inhabitants of the prison.

Upon release, Alien 3 received mixed reviews and Fincher disowned the film after the studio dismantled and reworked it without his consent. An alternate version of Alien 3 (officially titled the “Assembly Cut”) with over 30 minutes of additional footage and alternate key plot elements was released on the Alien Quadrilogy DVD set in 2003, and later in the Alien Anthology Blu-ray set in 2010.

Titan Books recently reissued Alan Dean Foster’s Alien 3: The Official Movie Novelization, as well as his adaptations of Alien and Aliens. After re-reading Foster’s novel, I thought it would be fun to explore some of the differences between the book and the film and how unused elements from the screenplay were recycled for subsequent Alien films and Ridley Scott’s 2012 prequel, Prometheus.

Continue below for 15 Things You Didn’t Know About Alien 3: The Official Movie Novelization, and be sure to check out 15 things about the Alien and Aliens novelizations if you missed them.
