Fire & Ice

The live-action remake of the 1983 animated fantasy-adventure Fire & Ice that filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has been developing for years has finally found a home at Sony Pictures, according to Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline.

Rodriguez will direct the film based upon his own screenplay and the production company Bold Films, which in the past has brought us such features as Drive and Nightcrawler, will take an important role behind the scenes.

Ralph Bakshi

Ralph Bakshi has always been one of my heroes. The animation legend, who started out working for Terrytoons and Paramount Pictures before making his jump to feature filmmaking with his 1972 cult classic adaptation of Robert Crumb’s Fritz the Cat, has always displayed a unique gift for smashing the boundaries for traditional animated storytelling. He alternated personal projects like Heavy Traffic, Coonskin, and American Pop with large-scale animated fantasies like The Lord of the Rings, Wizards, and Fire & Ice, his wonderful creative collaboration with the legendary fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. It was Bakshi’s version of The Lord of the Rings that Peter Jackson has credited with inspiring him to become a filmmaker and mount his own epic Rings trilogy more than two decades after the Bakshi version failed to set the box office afire.

In the years that followed Bakshi would attempt to make live-action/animated adaptations of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye to no avail. After butting heads with Paramount studio heads over the direction and casting of his 1992 film Cool World, Bakshi retired from cinema and moved to New Mexico to focus on his painting, but his legacy as an animator and filmmaker endures to this day.

Fire and Ice

Robert Rodriguez is feeling pretty productive lately—and it’s a good thing, too, because multiple projects that he’s been developing for a while now and/or waiting for all who are involved in said projects’ schedules to open up are finally ready to get moving.

It begins with Machete Kills, the sequel to 2010’s Machete that sees Danny Trejo returning as the vengeful ex-Federale (and possibly joined by Mel Gibson), followed by Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the long-awaited follow-up to 2005’s Sin City—both of which Rodriguez announced recently would film this summer.

Now Rodriguez has also confirmed that after those two movies are done, he’ll next do Fire and Ice, the animated project that he’s been developing that’s a remake of the 1983 Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi movie of the same name, inspired, of course, by Frazetta’s iconic art works.
