Within the course of seven months, Reddit user Scopolamina went from relative newbie to 2012’s top ranked user on the social news site, amassing an unheard of 1.87 million karma points, the Reddit currency that marks the success and popularity of a particular user. During that span of time, he also submitted well over 37,000 posts, moderated about 300 subreddits (most NSFW), and has personally been responsible for removing countless incidents of spam on the site.

Then, in mid-January, as seems to happen with increasing frequency to top Reddit users, he was unceremoniously banned from the site, following allegations of selling his influence to spammers. Joining us to talk about that incident, his experience as Reddit’s top user, and his insider secrets to becoming a top user, is Reddit user Scopolamina…

What rights to privacy can we expect when we choose to act anonymously/pseudonymously on the internet? Do they end at your public actions? Is it acceptable to violate the privacy of one class of user over another? Is it the purview of objective journalism to make that decision? The outing of Reddit‘s ViolentAcrez, “the Biggest Troll on the Web” by Gawker columnist Adrian Chen brings to light those questions and more this week.

But first, the headlines…Microsoft names launch dates and pricing for Windows 8 & Surface RT, Apple teases the possible announcement of the iPad Mini. Saturday Night Live mocks whiny tech bloggers.

Bat-Frisbee

Jeff Matsuda, the Emmy Award-winning creative director for The Batman animated television series, took to Reddit on Wednesday to promote his new mobile game Age of Monsters – Rock Paper Scissors by offering to draw any and all requests.

Reddit users took this advantage to have fun with Matsuda by asking for humorous Batman-related sketches such as Batman and Alfred playing frisbee (seen above), a Breaking Bad inspired image featuring characters from the hit show dressed as Batman and Robin, as well as Batman and Spock high fiving (my personal fave).

Reddit Secret Santa 2010 Proves Geeks Are Thoughtful Gift Givers

Secret Santa 2010In a world permeated by social media and mobile communication, it seems impossible to ignore the persistent thoughts inside your own head long enough to really focus on a concept like gift giving — a single act of generosity tailored to a specific person for the sole purpose of making them ridiculously, tear-inducingly happy.

I’d like to believe most people would enjoy being able to come up with a gift of that caliber on an annual basis for every single person in their lives. Realistically, only those closest to you will be afforded thoughtful presents while the bulk of others will get something for the sake of giving them something. Giving a thoughtful gift to someone you don’t know very well can prove to be a difficult task.

That is, unless you are one of the more than 17,000 Reddit users in 90 different countries who participated in the site’s second Secret Santa gift exchange, which generated over $600,000 (and counting) in purchases and set a new world record, according to a post by Hueypriest on the Reddit blog.

‘Battlestar Galactica’ Character Alignment Chart
space
Tom Cheredar   |

BSG Character ChartA Reddit user by the name lolbacon has created a classic 3×3 character alignment chart for Battlestar Galactica that is pretty dead on. For instance, Kara “Starbuck” Thrice represents “chaotic good” while the Adamas represent the rest of the good spectrum. Also, Baltar is “True Neutral,” which is an interesting choice.

While some of the comments from the submission criticized breaking down the rich and vibrant BSG personalities into overly simplistic categories of good, neutral and evil, lolbacon said he sympathized and agreed that the characters are so often varying shades of grey.

“It was pretty difficult to try to pigeonhole them. I just had a weird dream last night about playing a BSG D&D campaign and spent the better part of this morning thinking about how the characters would fall on an alignment chart.”

Check out the image here at right (click for large view).
