Played by the late great Christopher Reeve, the film details the demise of alien planet Krypton as Jor-El, Oscar winner Marlon Brando sends his child off to planet Earth. Guardians of the Galaxy Image

Superhero films can be a dime a dozen, especially since a lot of them come out every other if not every month of the year. So it would be hard for one to make an everlasting impression on anyone, let alone someone like Steven Spielberg.

Now, the legendary filmmaker, who is at the Cannes Film Festival to help promote is upcoming film, The BFG – check out the new trailer here – is talking about which superhero films are his favorite. And don’t worry, he is not a part of the conspiracy, as his list is a pretty nice mix from Marvel and DC. Check out which of the superhero films are his favorite below.

Vilmos Zsigmond, the legendary cinematographer who brought an unmistakable gift for gorgeous imagery to some of the greatest motion pictures ever made, died on January 1, 2016, according to Variety. He was 85 years old.

Born in Hungary in 1930, Zsigmond left the country at the age of 26 along with fellow future cinematography great László Kovács (Ghostbusters). His early years in the U.S. were spent working as a still photographer and lab technician and filming exploitation features such as The Sadist, Psycho a Go-Go, and Five Bloody Graves.

The Goonies 30

Back in 1985, Richard Donner, Steven Spielberg, and Chris Columbus created a tale of a bunch of outcast kids searching for buried pirate treasure. It doesn’t necessarily sound like a classic. But to those of Generations X and Y, the adventures of Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk, and Sloth are those of legends. This past weekend, Sunday to be precise, The Goonies celebrated its 30th birthday.

Superman: The Movie

When Superman: The Movie was first released on DVD in 2001 it came with three new documentaries that examined various aspects of the costly and complicated production in exhausting detail. Last November, Warner Bros. uploaded all three docs to their YouTube channel. You can watch them here below.

Each documentary features extensive interviews with many of the film’s surviving cast and crew members, including the late Christopher Reeve, as well as vintage behind-the-scenes footage, original screen tests for actors and actresses who tested for the roles of Superman and Lois Lane, and visual effects test footage. The first two are even hosted by Jimmy Olsen himself, Marc McClure.

Superman Blu-ray Anthology

Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology
Blu-ray
Starring Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey
Release date: June 7, 2011

With all the superhero movies that have been made over the last few decades, the first Superman movie is still by far my favorite. Based on the DC Comics character, the 1978 film was the superhero film for all ages, not just children, and set the bar for all comic book movies to follow.

Now, all four original films, which starred Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel, along with the 2006 sequel/reboot hybrid Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh, are now collected in high definition in Warner Home Video’s new offering Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology Blu-ray Edition.

Release Date: April 27, 2010

Action Comics #900 is quite simply a celebration of everything great about Superman as a character. The issue, throughout most of the stories, is a showcase of Superman’s willingness to help and serve the human race primarily through self-sacrifice. Most of the recent anniversary episodes that we’ve seen, primarily through DC Comics, have been treated as anthologies with three or more short stories, one focusing on the end of a story arc, a couple of “untold tales,” and then one that starts the next story arc in Superman #700 and Wonder Woman #600; either that or a one and done story like Batman #700.

This book, on the other hand, focused more than half of its attention on the wrap-up of Lex Luthor’s Black Ring storyline by Paul Cornell and Pete Woods, and the return of Superman into Action Comics. Unfortunately, it also includes the recent Reign of Doomsday story arc, although in this issue it was a minor distraction, but still paled in comparison to the epic showdown between arch rivals Superman and Lex Luthor.
