Cowboy Ninja Viking

We’ve been hearing about a movie adaptation of the comic Cowboy Ninja Viking for quite a while now, but nothing has come of it yet. The movie is still in the works, currently set up at Universal, and now comes word that a director has been chosen for the project.

According to reports, Universal has hired Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren to helm the film, which has Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt attached.

Escape from New York by Tim Bradstreet banner

BOOM! Studios already has one pretty successful comic book adaptation of a John Carpenter/Kurt Russell 1980s movie under their belt with Big Trouble in Little China. Now, the publisher has officially announced a second series based on another cult classic, Escape from New York.

Starting in December, writer Christopher Sebela (High Crimes, and Dead Letters) will chronicle the ongoing adventures of Snake Plissken, ex-soldier and all around badass. The original film detailed his adventure to save the President after Air Force One crash lands in the now prison island of Manhattan. I say continuing adventures, although I’m not sure if the series will be a retelling of the original movie or a sequel, and if it is a sequel if they’ll continue the story on from the actual movies sequel, Escape from L.A.

Release Date: January 15, 2014
Cover Price: $3.99

Cursed #1 would have been a lesser comic all together if not for the tool of storytelling used by the creative team. In fact, I don’t think I would’ve liked it at all otherwise.

Writers Michael Moreci and Tim Daniel make use of their talents to make what could have been a mediocre story fantastic. This isn’t “OH MY GOD! THEY’RE PUTTING AN ALL-NEW SPIN ON THE GENRE!,” but what they DID do was use a very unique way to tell this story. I can’t stress that the way they tell this story is SO FUN! It starts with an aftermath of sorts, and the issue ends on a huge reveal that, even though you knew was coming, really knocks you for a loop. Amidst all of that, we get some great information about what’s going on, where the story is headed, and what the purpose of this book is.

Release Date: July 25, 2012
Cover Price: $3.50

Riley Rossmo has seen the not too distant future and apparently, it’s a mod, mod world. Everyone is running around in these minimalist Barbarella-type space age circa 1960’s catsuit ensembles. Some even have capes like some fantasy Norwegian ski commercial and the entire village seems to favor tonal blue. The landscape is dystopian all right, but forgets Mad Max post urban warfare. These fabulous-looking people are in an arid desert planet being stalked by giant biomechanical animal-type creatures that look like medieval transformers called names like Umbras and Avios. Junk covers the landscape like a blanket (hence the title). Scraps of metal and whatever else is left are used in all sort of inventive ways contraption-wise. But, instead of looking like a junkyard, the colors by Owen Gieni add to the otherworldly quality of this mysterious landscape. Instead of shiny cyber metallic colors this is a world of dusty and dingy pastels that look worse for wear and keep themselves from looking too babyish. Color is its own character here, with even the umbras bleeding a vibrant shade of violet. Intrigued yet?

The GoD List: Comics For July 25, 2012

RIP Victims of The Aurora, CO Shootings

Each and every week “Heel Heat!” MK2Fac3 and “Babyface Pop!” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 25, 2012. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I’ve intentionally taken about a week off from writing for the site, with good reason. The shooting in Aurora, CO, has affected me in a way that I have a very hard time expressing. The simple fact is that a completely insane and terrible person decided that he would murder a bunch of people for no reason. In my opinion, this person doesn’t have a name. He shouldn’t be given a chance to be known by anyone and his name shouldn’t be present on the lips of anyone. The majority of us who write for this site and plenty of those of us who read this site were present at midnight screenings across the country. This could have happened to any one of us, but it didn’t. It happened to a group of people who are very similar to us, and they should be remembered. They should be honored, and I’ve been trying to get an idea to honor these people, but nothing I could think of would be enough. So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to list their names so that we don’t forget. They’re the people who we should remember, and they’re the people we should be talking about, so to Jessica Ghawi, Matt McQuinn, Micayla Medek, John Larimer, Alex Sullivan, Alex Teves, Jonathan Blunk, Jesse Childress, AJ Boik, Rebecca Ann Wingo, Gordon W. Cowden, and Veronica Moser-Sullivan, we know who you are, we care about who you are, and we won’t forget you.

Now back to your regularly scheduled The GoD List….

Rebel Blood #1Rebel Blood #1
Story by Alex Link, Riley Rossmo
Art & Cover by Riley Rossmo
Release Date: March 21, 2012
Cover price: $3.50

“Nobody’s sure what’s going on here. The only way to describe it is that something… some infection… Something like rabies is sweeping the city.” – Rebel Blood #1

While I’m not an exclusive horror reader, my reviews have so far suggested as much, and well, to hell with switching it up, here goes another with Image’s new series, Rebel Blood.

I was really intrigued by the solicit for Rebel Blood #1 which teased the book as being a world that’s “hell in a hand basket”: “A highly infectious disease has turned every living thing into zombies. Your neighbors will rend your flesh with their bare teeth. So will the rats. And if the rats don’t, the squirrels will. Save yourself. Stay in the woods. Pray it hasn’t reached the wolves…and keep your gun loaded.”
