Moana directors John Musker and Ron Clements

Moana marks the seventh time that John Musker and Ron Clements have collaborated together for a Disney animated film, but this is the first that uses the popular CGI techniques. We were fortunate enough to join fellow journalists for an early preview of the film where we saw clips, the technology used to bring these characters to life, and the research trips they took to develop the script. We have all of what we learned from the trip in our exclusive 65 Things To Know About Disney’s Moana piece, which was posted earlier this morning.

However, after watching some rough footage of the film, the two directors stuck around to answer a few of the journalist’s questions about the title character, the message, and the creative signature. Check out what they had to say below.

Disney's Moana

This November, Walt Disney Animation Studio will be releasing their second theatrical feature of the year and their 56th overall, Moana. Longtime Disney collaborators John Musker and Ron Clements return to direct this film about a teenage Polynesian princess who ventures out on a journey to save her people and to find her identity. The film brings in all sorts of talent that we’ve pretty much come to expect from the studio, from the voice talents of Auli‘i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Jemaine Clement, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Alan Tudyk, and Nicole Scherzinger, right down to the music from Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In August, Disney invited us (along with a group of fellow journalists) to watch a couple of scenes and learn about the process of developing a script, creating the film’s setting, polishing the effects, and creating the two lead characters: Moana and Maui. Just like Zootopia, it has become apparent that the studio emphasizes the importance of research for their stories and pushing the envelope in animation. Check out what we learned from the scenes and the presentation below.

Disney's Moana

During the Rio Olympic Games a new TV spot for the upcoming Walt Disney Animation Studios feature Moana was aired.

Unlike the usual 30-second TV spot, however, this one runs about a minute in length. So it’s somewhere between a TV spot and a teaser trailer. But most importantly it shows plenty of new footage we didn’t see in the first trailer, so those excited for the movie will definitely want to check it out.

Continue below to watch the Moana Olympics TV spot.

Disney's Moana

Disney’s Zootopia recently hit $1 billion earlier this week, but it is easy to forget that they also have another animated film that is coming out this year. Moana is the Pacific Islands set film that centers on a young teenage girl (voiced by 14-year-old native Hawaiian, Auli’i Cravalho) who shares a special bond with the ocean. With dreams of becoming an ocean navigator, our title character and her animal friends — a pig named Pua and a cranky rooster named Hei Hei – journey out into the ocean where they meet the devilishly handsome demi-god Maui (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson). Together they will revive the once-proud family tradition that has mysteriously gone unpracticed and meet dangerous elemental challenges along the way.

Aside from the casting and the D23 presentation that we saw last year, there has been little to no promotions for Moana. Until now. Johnson took to social media to unveil the film’s first poster and announce the release date of the first trailer for the film. Check out all of that below.

Moana

Disney’s animated musicals have been known to cast on two fronts: they are notable A-list actors or performers with powerful singing voices, and Moana is no different. While Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will provide a supporting role to the newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, the film will be adding someone with a musical background.

According to new reports, the movie will be a reunion of sorts as Hamilton star Phillipa Soo will be joining the film which will have songs written by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will be taking one last bow in July. More on the story below.

Disney's Moana

Back in August we got our very first look at Disney’s upcoming Moana. The animated musical takes us to the South Pacific world of Oceania where Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. At the time the only person cast was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who voices the male lead Maui, a demi-god who helps Moana on her journey.

Now Disney has found the voice of the title character. In a newly released video, 14-year-old native Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho has been confirmed to voice Moana. Check out the very emotional video and the first image of Moana and Maui together below.

At the D23 Expo on Friday, Walt Disney Animation Studios presented the South Pacific-set Moana, which follows the title navigator as she sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her journey she teams up with the legendary demi-god Maui to traverse the open ocean on a voyage where they will encounter enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds, and ancient folklore.

Moana takes places 2,000 years before our time in the South Pacific. Our title hero shares a special bond with the ocean and it is that bond drives her to be a navigator, a once-proud family tradition that mysterious has gone unpracticed. She then sets out to be that wayfinder against her father’s wishes, and takes her animal friends — a pig named Pua and a cranky rooster named Hei Hei — along her journey. Then there’s the meet-up with the demi-god Maui. More on him later.

The movie is the Mouse House’s 56th animated feature, and the next Disney princess feature after the 2013 juggernaut Frozen. It was originally planned for 2018, but was bumped up to 2016 this past October.
