Avengers Helicarrier

For the first episode of a new series of videos titled “Will It Fly,” YouTube channel Flite Test chose the Helicarrier, the massive flying base of operations for Marvel agency S.H.I.E.L.D. seen in 2012’s The Avengers.

While not full size (I mean c’mon now, that’d just be bonkers), they did build a fairly large remote control version of the Helicarrier (their version of it, anyway) and brought it out to see if they could get it to fly.

You can watch a video of how it went below.

Iron Man Manual

Iron Man Manual
Hardcover
Written by Daniel Wallace
Insight Editions
Release Date: November 19, 2013

Iron Man. Tony Stark. Ten years ago these names weren’t nearly as well known as they are today. Marvel was always proud of their Iron Man comic franchise but as with most comic characters, only the readers had the whole scoop. And then came the movies. Now these are household names, the movies are cinematic blockbusters and you cannot help but see Robert Downey, Jr. as the face of old Shell Head. The films did more for the name than the four decades of comics prior, I enjoy them and think they cast Tony perfectly. To celebrate this trilogy of action packed films, Marvel and Insight Editions produced this Iron Man Manual. A beautifully bound book with so much going for it that it’s sure to be a hit!

That said, I am profoundly disappointed that no one saw fit to include anything from the comics. I’m not kidding. Not a single piece from any Iron Man comic is in this. There is a comic cover shown at the beginning of the book, but it’s a Captain America cover! Seriously? This should have more fittingly been called the Iron Man Movie Manual, because that’s what it is. Every single page, every insert, every thought is based on the films. What a huge let down this was for me. Comic fans will open this up and feel the same shock I did, of this I have no doubt. But now that I have that off my chest, let me review what is actually in there, okay? I’ve vented and feel a little better.

Vin Diesel Image

Two weeks ago news broke that Vin Diesel of Pitch Black and the Fast and the Furious franchises was meeting with Marvel Studios about a possible mystery role in one of their forthcoming movies. How did we find that out? Diesel revealed it on his Facebook page!

So then began speculation about what role that could be, and how exactly would the established action star fit into a cinematic universe that has launched more than a few acting careers but whose parent studio has become infamous for its draconian business practices. Fueling the rampant theorizing, Diesel posted this picture on his Facebook today…

The Avengers director Joss Whedon

To say that Joss Whedon is overwhelmingly busy would probably be an understatement. The guy is currently writing and will direct The Avengers 2; he’s an executive producer for the planned S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, and he’s a creative consultant for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only that, but he also has to push his contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in the summer. So yeah, he’s got a lot on his plate. But somehow he finds the time to attend events, and at a recent function, he shared a few things about the status of The Avengers 2, S.H.I.E.L.D., and his involvement in creating the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Whedon told MTV that The Avengers 2 has an outline and that the script should be ready in a few months. On the tone of the film, he said that The Avengers 2 would go deeper instead of bigger. Honestly after a huge battle like the one we saw in the first film, it be nice to get a more personal story and take a step back from the big hefty action. Apparently he wants to go so deep and personal that it will be painful.

SHILED

The success of The Avengers opened the door for bold new possibilities for the Marvel franchise. Phase 2 is already getting underway with Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World shooting, and Joss Whedon signed an exclusive contract that allows him to creatively consult for the studio until 2015.

Now a lot can happen in two full years. But perhaps one of the biggest things, aside from directing The Avengers 2, is the fact that he will be a producer of the new S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show that will air on ABC sometime in the very near future. Up until now, we only knew that he would be directing the pilot, but now a new character description sheet has been revealed. This sheet details the agents you will be seeing on the show. Check it out here below.
