Spoilers for Mr. Robot below…

“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide…” — “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Queen

After last week’s penultimate episode of Season 2 of Mr. Robot, that song was all I could think in relation to creator Sam Esmail’s cyber drama. I feel just like Elliot (newly crowned Emmy winner for Best Actor, Rami Malek). I don’t know what to believe, I don’t know what is real anymore. Last week was a surreal nightmare. After spending the majority of the season thinking Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallstrom) was dead from a gunshot wound he delivered personally, Wellick joins Elliot for a bizarre cab ride, leaving us desperately searching for clues as to who and what is real. Is Tyrell another manifestation of Elliot’s subconscious like the Mr. Robot himself (Christian Slater)? In the Season 2 finale, Episode 2.12 “eps2.9pyth0n-pt2.p7z,” all of fsociety’s paranoia, as well as the craziness caused by the 5/9 hack come home to roost.

Last week’s episode ended with a bang literally. Darlene (Carly Chaikin) and Cisco (Michael Drayer) took a friend to the hospital and were enjoying a moment of peaceful normalcy together. At the same time Agent Dom DiPierro (Grace Gummer) got a lead that ID’ed Cisco and against her wishes the Feds released his photo to the news media. This made him a target for The Dark Army. As she finds the two sharing a meal a few blocks from the hospital, a Dark Army gunman shows up and opens fire. DiPierro gives chase covered in blood, but whose we don’t know. As for Elliot (Rami Malek), he is facing a grave realization; maybe Mr. Robot was lying to him after all. How else do you explain his disappearance at the same time Joanna Wellick (Stephanie Corneliussen) shows up talking about her husband? Is Tyrell Wellick alive? Questions need to be answered as we hit the penultimate episode in Mr. Robot’s second season.

Spoilers below.

Last week, Elliot (Rami Malek) struggled to keep his identity straight bouncing between himself and Mr. Robot (Christian Slater). He demanded to meet with the Dark Army to find out their next phase of the plan, but the problem was that HE came up stage 2 and doesn’t remember. Fsociety is going crazy and are in paranoia overload. The FBI was closing in and Agent DiPierro (Grace Gummer) knew that Angela (Portia Doubleday) was involved somehow. The desperation and paranoia are at fever pitches for everyone. And just when it couldn’t get weirder, Joanna Wellick (Stephanie Corneliussen) parked outside Elliot’s apartment.

We are at paranoia overload in season 2 of Mr. Robot. Last week’s episode was the first in the series to not feature both of the top stars, Rami Malek and Christian Slater, and yet the tension was palpable. Susan Jacobs (Sandrine Holt) returned to her home and found fsociety there. Their response was to tie her up and hold her hostage. Mobley (Azhar Khan) is convinced the Feds are after him, and that intuition turns out to be true. Luckily they have nothing concrete on him. Unluckily, they may be safer in custody as they potentially are targets for The Dark Army, the deadly Chinese hacking group that already shot up the FBI on an Asian visit. Darlene (Carly Chaikin) reached several breaking points. She not only murders Jacobs by stun-gunning her into her swimming pool, but then helps destroy the evidence and batters her hacker boyfriend with a bat after finding he’s in cahoots with the Dark Army. Also off the deep end is Angela (Portia Doubleday), as her dual role in helping to hack the FBI while sleazing it up with E-Corp execs is taking its toll. Fsociety needs its leader back. They need Elliot.

A recap of last week’s episode of The Returned, before we start our review.

The focus was “Claire” as we got more of her backstory. After all these weeks of thinking Jack (Mark Pellegrino) was the bad spouse, we found out that Claire (Tandi Wright) and Peter (Jeremy Sisto) had been together a year before Camille’s (India Ennenga) death. Lena (Sophie Lowe) comes home and only tells Tony’s (Aaron Douglas) part in her disappearance. He confesses, and is immediately doomed. Julie (Sandrine Holt) brought Victor (Dylan Kingwell) with her to the station. Victor thinks that Tony hurt her, so he makes Tony hallucinate his mother. Tony smashes his own head against the table until he dies. The twins reconcile and Lena’s wound is healing. Rowan (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) stretches the events to make it look like Simon (Mat Vairo) was extra dangerous (maybe he was, who knows), so Tommy (Kevin Alejandro) wouldn’t get in trouble for killing him. We know that’s not going to happen anyway because…

Simon kicked himself out of his morgue drawer, resurrected!

Let’s recap The Returned 1.7 “Rowan,” before talking about this week’s episode.

We learned more about Rowan (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) last week. We now understand why she didn’t freak out when she saw Simon (Mat Vairo). She had visions of him before. At that point she couldn’t take it, and took a bunch of pills to end it all. Tommy (Kevin Alejandro) found her in time. Simon approached Chloe in the park with a message for her mother – he’s coming for them tonight. Rowan made her choice. When Simon showed, she told him to get away. He kept coming towards her, and Tommy shot him. I don’t think he was threatening at all, just pleading. She thinks he chose to die years ago.

Here’s a recap of last week’s “Lucy,” before the review of The Returned 1.7 “Rowan.”

What is a fake clairvoyant to do when she is stabbed, chewed on, dead, then returned? Turn into a real clairvoyant of course. Lucy (Leah Gibson) is scared shitless, and a lesson in be-careful-what-you-wish-for. Jack (Mark Pellegrino) is a bit freaked out himself. After passing out in the woods, Lena (Sophie Lowe) is found by Adam (Rhys Ward), who seems to be cured by her kindness. Camille (India Ennenga) tells Ben who she really is and he predictably runs away. Victor (Dylan Kingwell) messes with Peter’s (Jeremy Sisto) mind for revenge. As Peter begs forgiveness, he seems to see the gunman Henry/Victor saw that night put a gun to his head. And then it’s his own hand. Sisto did a great job with that scene. Without words, I knew that was exactly how Henry felt that night. And Peter did too.

Let’s recap last Monday’s episode, before The Returned 1.6 “Lucy” review.

During The Returned 1.5 “Tony and Adam”, we finally discover the identity of the stabber – Adam (Rhys Ward). Tony (Aaron Douglas) had been covering it up until he finally covered Adam up by burying him alive. But Adam’s back and the stabbing has resumed, however Tony’s different. He was eaten up with guilt at what he did and confesses to Adam. Needless to say that was not taken well.

Camille (India Ennenga) is now hanging out with Lena’s (Sophie Lowe) gang as a “cousin.” Lena runs out of the hospital to confront her in the bar, but ends up looking like a crazy in a hospital gown with a wicked looking open wound on her back. She passes out in the woods and Adam’s face looms over her.

Beware! Spoilers!

Last week on The Returned 1.3 “Julie”, Simon (Mat Vairo) sweetly pretended to be the ghost Rowan (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) thought he was, but Lena (Sophie Lowe) soon dispelled that notion when she came looking for him. Tony (Aaron Douglas) gets dragged down for questioning about the attack on Lucy (Leah Gibson), but they got nothing. What he got was to exchange shovel blows to the head with his returned son Adam (Rhys Ward). Camille (India Ennenga) masquerades as a long lost cousin to come out of hiding. Julie (Sandrine Holt) gets an unpleasant visit.
