Oscars Image

On Sunday night, Hollywood will get together for its biggest party of the year, the 88th Annual Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars. The night promises laughs, shocks, and plenty of controversy as for the second straight year all 20 acting nominees are white. With comedian Chris Rock hosting, expect some jabs directed at the Academy.

I love the Oscars, even when I hate them. Movies are my passion and the biggest night in movies has become a holiday akin to the Super Bowl. Every year, I try earnestly to see all the films nominated for top honors, and I went over and beyond this year. Not only did I watch all 8 nominated films, but I watched 19 of the 20 of the ranked Oscar performances (sorry Charlotte Rampling). Since this is my first of several Oscars 2016 columns to come, I thought it best to start in the same way the big show begins… no sorry, not with a huge musical number. Nearly every year, they open the awards distribution with a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Last year, JK Simmons accepted his trophy for playing the deliciously malicious orchestra leader in Best Pic nominee Whiplash. Simmons, much more resigned than his ferocious role as Fletcher, encouraged everyone to call their moms.

So without further ado, let’s introduce the Best Supporting Actor and Actress nominees, and then move on to the Best Actor and Actress nominees. I’ll tell you who will likely will win… but more importantly, who I think should win.

Saoirse Ronan In How I Live Now

There is no denying the void that Harry Potter films have left behind. Luckily Warner Bros. has given spinoff movies the green light. The first spinoff will be an adaptation of the classic Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Newt Scamander, a “magizoologist” who writes the textbook for which the film is based on, will be played by Eddie Redmayne. It will be directed by David Yates using script by J.K. Rowling.

Now Fantastic Beasts is looking for some female leads, and a new report says that Saoirse Ronan and Dakota Fanning are among those in the running for one role, while Kate Upton and Elizabeth Debicki are among those up for another. More on the story below.

Ryan Gosling's Lost River Movie Poster

The first trailer for Lost River, the directorial debut effort from Half Nelson and The Place Beyond the Pines star Ryan Gosling (who also wrote the screenplay), has been released online by Warner Brothers Pictures.

The movie has had a bit of a bumpy ride thus far, being met with a mixture of applause and boos when screened at the Cannes Film Festival. But whether or not you’ll enjoy the final product or not is to be determined on another day. This is about the first trailer. And it’s most certainly a strange and just a little bit trippy trailer to behold. Clearly Gosling has been trying to learn from the directors that he has worked with in the past, especially in his time with Nicolas Winding Refn for Drive and Only God Forgives.

You can read more about Lost River and watch the first trailer below.
