Honest Trailer Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

In full disclosure, I hated this movie. Most of my friends loved it, and it is often a topic of divisive conversation. That being said, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has gained a fairly huge cult following since its 2010 release, and this week it gets the Honest Trailer treatment from the gang at Screen Junkies. I had several issues with the film, and number one is Michael Cera. I’ll put it delicately. I’m not a fan of his work. He has essentially played the same character with the same traits in nearly every one of his films, so much so that This is the End did a hilarious riff on him as a drugged out version of himself, obsessed with excess so much that as he dies on screen he pines for his cell phone. Number two, I felt like I was watching a movie with ADD… first it was teenage rom com, then a music video, then a video game… and I quickly stopped caring. But my biggest issue is something that narrator Jon Bailey picks up on… so let’s get to it!

Check out the Honest Trailer below.

Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 6. Scott Pilgrims Finest HourScott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour
Scott Pilgrim: Volume 6
Written and Drawn by Byran Lee O’Malley
Oni Press
Release date: July 20, 2010

This sixth book in the series has already been out for a while now, but with the movie version of Scott Pilgrim out on DVD now, we’re back to take a look at the final volume in the comic book series. I’m happy to say that Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour is very good, and it brings the series to a close in a very satisfying way. Yes, this is a great series that you owe it to yourself to read if you haven’t yet. It’s a modern classic that will hopefully get a whole new generation excited about comics.

Here is your official spoiler warning: I will be discussing events that happen not only in this volume, but any other volume in the series that I feel the need to reference. If you have not read Scott Pilgrim before, know that this is a very good series with a sense of humor deeply immersed in video game and music, but at its soul it is the story of two young people trying to make the switch from youthful lust into an adult relationship. The art borrows a lot from manga but is distinctly its own, and part of the joy is seeing writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley style evolve and mature over the course of all six volumes. It is very, very good and well worth your time and money. Okay, for the rest of you who have read the series, here are my thoughts.

Blu-ray Review: Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

Scott Pilgrim Blu-rayScott Pilgrim Vs The World
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Edgar Wright
Starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans
Universal Studios Home Entertainment
Release date: November 9, 2010

The lack of success that Scott Pilgrim Vs the World met at the box office shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the movie. It’s not shocking that the studio couldn’t find a good way to advertise the movie, and it may just be that there was always going to be a small audience for this film. However, this is a film that should not be measured by its box office receipt. It is one of my favorite movies of the year and it is a joy for me to watch every time I see it. So now that Scott Pilgrim Vs the World is out on DVD and Blu-ray, I certainly hope that the film discovers the audience it deserves. Not that I gain anything from it doing well, but I feel that this is a very good film that is a lot of fun, has some fantastic music, and some great performances.

Now granted, I am the target market for this Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. I am a fan of the comic book series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and I am also a fan of director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). I was very excited when I heard that Wright was going to direct it, as I knew he was a comic book fan and had a great voice for directing comedy and tragedy.

Don’t Panic: Why Scott Pilgrim’s Box Office ‘Failure’ Is Not The End Of The World
space
Henchman21   |  @   |

Scott PilgrimWith Scott Pilgrim Vs the World making less than $11 million at the domestic box office this weekend, many are calling it a failure, and that this is the end for adaptations of smaller graphic novels. I’m here to offer a different spin on things.

Yes, I can’t deny that I wish the film had done better at the box office. While it’s not a true measure of a film’s quality, box office numbers do matter, and the low returns on Scott Pilgrim show that a lot of people who would enjoy what I feel is a very good movie did not see it. However, it is good to remember that box office is very rarely an indication of a film’s quality, whether it be when a good movie does poorly, or a bad movie does well (I’ll let you provide your own examples of both).

Here are a few reasons why the relative poor showing at the box office is not the end of the world for Scott Pilgrim Vs the World.

Check This Out: Lucas Lee Poster Set From ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs The World’

You may have heard of a little graphic novel called Scott Pilgrim. You may have even seen the movie Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, which opened in theaters today. If you have, then you know that in this tale, Scott has to fight Ramona’s evil exes, and one of them is an actor named Lucas Lee (played by Chris Evans). Lucas Lee isn’t a very good actor, but he’s an actor nonetheless.

If you’re curious about Lee’s film credits, there’s some movie posters for the fake movies he’s starred in, like Action Doctor and The Game Is Over 2 — they are fantastic!

The posters are over at Empire, so check them out. I think my favorite is “Let’s Hope There Is A Heaven,” it’s fantastically cheesy! Make sure you pay close attention to the taglines.
