The Lion King

The Lion King
Director: Jon Favreau
Writer: Jeff Nathanson
Cast: Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones
Distributor: Walt Disney Studios
Rated PG | Minutes: 118
Release Date: July 19, 2019

When it comes to Disney animated films, The Lion King is considered to be one of the studio’s shining crown jewels. Released 25 years ago, the film raised the bar on animation and storytelling so high that it made it nearly impossible for any other animated feature from other studios to come close to its quality and standards. As such, there is no denying the film’s place within the Disney animation pantheon.

We then flash forward to 2019, when director Jon Favreau took the lessons that he learned from making the live-action The Jungle Book, and used tools and techniques to tell a beloved story in a new way that is visually bold and striking. Backed by a terrific voice cast including Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles, Billy Eichner, and Seth Rogen, The Lion King roars with astounding pride. But as great as it is and how respectful it is to honor the original, this reimagining’s major issue is that it takes too little risk to separate itself from its animated counterpart. This new take matches the story almost beat for beat. However, the new cast gives it a refreshing spin, and the visuals help audiences see the film from a completely new perspective. Jordan Peele redefines the genre in bold new ways by weaving in truth and honesty with horror. But horror has acted as a reflection on the society we live in now by terrifying us with the sort of imagery that very few would like to admit is true. With Us we get to see the monsters within us, or at least, the monsters that are capable of living within us.

And now, with the release of the Blu-ray, we get to see how Peele crafted this movie with precision and great detail. Check out our review, plus a look at some of the bonus features that take a deeper look at the production of the film, below.

The Lion King Nala

The marketing campaign for Disney’s upcoming The Lion King has relied a lot more on the visual than the auditory. We haven’t heard much from the cast, at least not directly. Any dialogue heard came from characters that are out of sight.

But that all changes with this new TV spot which reveals Beyoncé Knowles as the voice of Nala. Check out the TV Spot below.

Jordan Peele's Us

One of my favorite horror films to come out this year will finally be available for you to own this summer. Jordan Peele‘s Get Out follow-up Us was a huge box office success grossing over $170 million since it first opened back in March.

Now, Universal is ready to give us a reason to be afraid to go into a House of Mirrors or at least question everything we know about ourselves when they release the film on digital, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. Check out the full list of special features below.

The phrase “we are our own worst enemy” is a theme that plays a huge part in Jordan Peele‘s Us. The filmmaker’s sophomore effort walks that fine line between horror and social satire. It examines the human condition and uses scares as a vehicle to take a look at the monsters that lurk beneath our skin and what would happen if it were ever to crawl out of it. The end result is another genre-bending film with something to say. While allegories and metaphors have been a part of the fabric of horror films, Peele knows how to deliver that message with terrifying precision. Check out my full review of Us here below.

The Lion King

Those watching the Oscars last night might have caught a glimpse of Jon Favreau‘s The Lion King. The film is a CGI remake of the 1994 Academy Award-winning animated film that centered on a young lion cub being groomed to be king of Pride Rock. This new look may feel like familiar territory considering a lot of the footage in it was already seen in the initial teaser trailer. However, it all seems like its setting up for something bigger. And not just a brand new poster. Check out the teaser and the new poster here below.

Us Jordan Peele

There’s no doubt that Jordan Peele‘s Us, his follow up to Get Out, is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. And judging by the reactions and eagerness to see it as soon as possible, the Us makes its debut at SXSW later this year, we can expect to see the same visceral terror with a tinge of Twilight Zone. Even the film itself was inspired by that show. Now with the film’s theatrical release just a little over a month away from release, we are getting a new look at it with a brand new TV spot.

Initially set up to be unveiled during the Super Bowl, Peele posted the spot on a SubReddit, much to the delight of everyone. Check it out here below.

Starring Black Panther stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, Us sees a family going on a summer vacation getaway which seems to be going swimmingly until a strange malevolent presence starts to show up.
