The Last Drive-In

The next Friday the 13th is going to be one to remember for horror movie fans as Joe Bob Briggs, America’s preeminent drive-in critic and expert on the sleaziest and looniest B-movies ever made, brings The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs to the horror streaming service Shudder.

For 24 straight hours beginning on Friday July 13, Briggs will screen 13 of the greatest horror flicks of all time in what he describes in the newly released trailer (which you can watch here below) as a “dusk to dawn to dusk to almost dawn again” marathon.

Jordskott Episode 3 on Shudder

Jordskott
Episodes 3-4 Del III & Del IV
Created by Henrik Bjorn
Written by Frederick Olsen
Directed by Anders Engstrom
Starring Moa Gammel, Stina Sundlof, Johannes Brost, Hans Mosesson, Lia Boysen, Peter Andersson
Shudder
Release date: April 13, 2017

On April 6th, Swedish series Jordskott hit the United States exclusively on AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder. The channel, available online at Shudder.com or on Roku, released the first two episodes of the ten-part series and releases two episodes every Thursday. The first two parts introduced us the strange town of Silverhojd, where police officer Eva Thornblad (Moa Gammel) returned home after her father’s suicide. It’s also the sight where seven years ago her daughter Josefine disappeared by the lake, a presumed drowning. Eva’s return coincides with another small child’s disappearance and her maternal and police instincts are in high gear. Despite sounding like a police procedural, there is a ton of wacky stuff going on in Silverhhojd. Eva’s father was the head of a cellulose factory and according to crazy old man Olof Gran (Hans Mosesson), this “upset the forest.” A girl appears out of nowhere in the middle of the fog and Eva is convinced is Josefine. Except this girl is infected with a parasite and apparently gets nutrients from plants. As Eva digs deeper, her own life is threatened and the conspiracies and mysteries continue to grow…

Jordskott Shudder exclusive

Jordskott
Episodes 1-2
Created by Henrik Bjorn
Starring Moa Gammel, Stina Sundlof, Johannes Brost, Hans Mosesson
Shudder
Release date: April 6, 2017

The Swedish horror series Jordskott made its American debut on AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder on Thursday, April 6th. The first two hour-long episodes (of ten total) are currently available with a new episode premiering each Thursday.

Created by Henrik Bjorn, Jordskott is a hard series to pin down. There are children disappearing and reappearing, strange parasitic illnesses, conspiracies, and ancient legends about the forest. Even the word is hard to translate as a Google search of “Jordskott” yields varied translations, most coming back to “earth shot” or something with “soil.” Whatever it means, the show blends police drama with the supernatural and creates an eerie, atmospheric, and uneasy world. Horror fans should take note of this, as it’s yet another binge-worthy series.

Prevenge movie

Prevenge
Written & Directed by Alice Lowe
Cast: Alice Lowe, Gemma Whelan, Kate Dickie, Jo Hartley
Distributor: Shudder
Runtime: 88 min

A woman walks into a pet store and engages in a conversation with the owner rife with sexual innuendo. As he shows off his exotic animal collection the woman grabs a knife off a table and slices his throat. A thumping electronic score pipes in as the film title drops in one letter at a time. Prevenge is a horror movie because the main character is a serial killer. But rather than an escaped psychopath or a masked maniac, the killer here is a very pregnant woman.

Written by Takashi Shimizu & Koji Suzuki
Starring Masahiro Komoto, Mizuki Yamamoto, Aimi Satsukawa, Tina Tamashiro, Maiko Kikuchi, Masanobu Ando, Runa Endo
Shudder
Release date: January 26, 2017

King Kong vs. Godzilla! Frankenstein vs. The Wolfman! Freddy vs. Jason! Horror has always managed to take its greatest antagonists and pit them against one another. In 2017 Japan, the battle rages on in Sadako vs Kayako between the two most popular ghosts of the modern J-Horror scene: Sadako, the villainous ghost from Koji Suzuki’s Ring series, and Kayako, the ghost with a grudge from Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On films. These are the two film series that helped launched J-Horror to the United States signaling a host of remakes, including Gore Verbinski’s adaptation The Ring in 2002 and Shimizu’s own remake The Grudge in 2004. Each of those films were insanely popular, grossing well over $100 million and earning sequels. The third installment of The Ring series, Rings, opens in theaters next week, while Sadako vs Kayako debuts today on Shudder, AMC’s horror streaming service.

Shudder horror streaming service

With Halloween quickly approaching the desire the binge-watch horror films is upon us. There is no better time to sign up for Shudder, AMC’s horror streaming service that they debuted in 2015. At New York Comic-Con this weekend, I got a chance to talk with Shudder representatives at their booth on the show floor.

Rest assured there is no better place for horror fans to get their fill of classics, and hard to find rarities than on Shudder. They provide the largest library of horror films, and new movies to their queue each week. Thanks to the service, I was able to see the cult-classic Society as well as the late Herschel Gordon Lewis’ original splatter-fest, Blood Feast.

Rated R | 99 Minutes
Original US Release Date: June 11th, 1992 (completed in 1989)

“Didn’t you know Billy boy… the rich have always sucked off low-class sh*t like you!”

In the video store days I acquired my passion for horror movies by studying each and every VHS box. Some showed gross-out imagery, and would go on to join the notorious Video Nasties. Then, after the conversion to DVD and now Blu-ray and of course, online streaming, some films seemed lost forever in the abyss. One of the those was Society, the directorial debut of Brian Yuzna, who was an assistant director and producer of cult favorite Re-Animator (1985). He would work with director Stuart Gordon again as a producer on From Beyond (1986). Gordon and Yuzna specialized in “body horror”, a subgenre of horror that focuses on the graphic destruction and dismantling of the human form. If you’re struggling with that definition, think the films of David Cronenberg, especially The Fly (1986), and Videodrome (1983). In other words, these films usually are filled with grotesque scenes of graphic bodily mutations and mutilations.

Did you ever wonder how in a slasher movie, you run and you run, and the killer always manages to end up in front? Have you ever considered that horror’s most notorious killers actually craft out lengthy plans, before showing up and wreaking havoc? Ever contemplate that Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers have a lot more working upstairs than just raging bloodlust? If you answered yes to any of these questions, and hell, even if you didn’t, then Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon from 2006 is for you.

This is one of the most original, self referential, and unique horror films of the past decade. And the best place to find this hugely underrated and underseen horror gem is on the newest horror movie streaming service, Shudder.

Shudder-Header

AMC may stand for “American Movie Classics,” but they’ve been riding the horror genre bandwagon hard the last few years. Already the home of horror’s most successful series, The Walking Dead, and featuring Fearfest marathons during the Halloween season, it only made sense for AMC to push further with horror. In the late Spring they debuted their new streaming service, Shudder, available online at Shudder.com, and on ROKU and other devices. If you are a passionate horror junkie, gore hound, or even occasional genre dabbler, Shudder is worth the price of admission. The best compliment I can give Shudder is that browsing the channel on ROKU, I felt like I was back in the VHS video store days, scanning shelves up and down.
