Sam Mendes directs Daniel Craig in Skyfall

Quantum of Solace pretty much set the bar low on Bond film expectations, so its succeeding director could easily jump over it with the next Bond film. When Sam MendesSkyfall came out late last year, the bar immediately was raised sky high. Touted as one of the best Bond films in its 50-year span, Skyfall went on to be a box office hit and even a BAFTA award winner. But its sequel is still without a director.

In a rare move, however, The Daily Mail reports that Mendes could return to direct Bond 24. According to them, there is a 75 percent chance that he will come back for a second time. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have gone on to say that they would like to see the director return for a second time. Rumor was that the next two films on Daniel Craig‘s contract will have a connective storyline. Something that Mendes has said he doesn’t really look forward to, which explained his hesitancy to come back, and Craig has denied.

Indie Game: The Movie

2012 was a really exciting year for film. We saw the culmination of a masterpiece world building franchise from Marvel Entertainment, perhaps one of the best 007 movies ever made, and Ben Affleck showed once again that there’s much more to him than haters would have led you to believe. It was actually really difficult to compile just 12 films for a best of list. Some great movies were left completely off my list such as Wreck-it-Ralph. The film is a joy and it truly tickles the funny bone of geeks that grew up with video games in the ’80s and that still play them now. Jiro Dreams of Sushi was a masterpiece documentary that follows the family of one of Japan’s greatest sushi chef’s and the film features some truly beautiful sushi cinematography! There are others, but I’m already giving myself two extra entries in this list just to play with the “12” gimmick.

These sorts of lists are just pure opinion. What I like about them though as a movie fan is by reading them I might discover some gem of a film that I haven’t seen or heard about or I might be convinced to give a movie a chance that I was planning to pass up.

OK, enough babbling, here are my Top 12 films of 2012.

Film Quotes of 2012

2012 was a fantastic year for movies. Films like The Dark Knight Rises and Marvel’s The Avengers entertained audiences with blockbuster action sequences and the ultimate in childhood wish fulfillment, while movies such as Drew Goddard‘s Cabin in the Woods and Gareth Edward‘s The Raid: Redemption will long be remembered as putting the nail in the coffin of their respective genres.

We saw new films from acclaimed directors like Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan, Ang Lee, David O. Russell, Paul Thomas Anderson, William Friedkin, Steven Soderbergh, Ben Affleck, Sam Mendes, and Kathryn Bigelow. Not to mention the latest offerings from Rian Johnson, Joss Whedon, Richard Linklater, and newcomers Colin Trevorrow, Benh Zeitlin, and Stephen Chbosky.

So many memorable characters – so many great lines delivered by talented actors inhabiting their roles. Here are some of the best (and a few of the worst) film quotes from 2012. Feel free to include your own in the comments! You can also check out my Top 25 Films of 2012 here!

MGM/Columbia Pictures
Rated PG-13 | 143 Minutes

In Skyfall, James Bond (Daniel Craig) fails to recover a drive containing sensitive information, resulting in the exposure of undercover NATO agents in terrorist organizations.

Meanwhile, the enigmatic criminal mastermind Silva (Javier Bardem) orchestrates an attack on MI6 headquarters that kills several agents.

Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee Gareth Mallory (Ralph Finnes) raises concerns about M’s (Judi Dench) competence as head of the Secret Intelligence Service. It seems the only person who can restore M’s reputation is Bond. James Bond.

Directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road), Skyfall is the 23rd installment of the long-running spy series, featuring an all-star ensemble that includes Naomie Harris as Eve, Ben Whishaw as Q, Bérénice Marlohe as Sévérine, and Albert Finney as Kincade.

Martin Campbell’s 2006 film, Casino Royale, rebooted the James Bond series, establishing a new timeline and narrative framework, allowing the film to show a less experienced, more vulnerable Bond. The film introduced Daniel Craig (Layer Cake) and was praised for its dark, realistic reboot of the series – in the spirit of Batman Begins.

Sam Mendes directs Daniel Craig in Skyfall

Directors are presented with many opportunities to helm a variety of projects. In Sam Mendes case he took on a film called Preacher, which never could get off the ground, and took a pass at The Avengers, which ended up becoming a blockbuster hit. But that’s okay, he can take comfort in knowing that Skyfall is a critical hit and is sure to be a box office smash stateside.

In an interview with Collider, Mendes explains why Preacher couldn’t get into production and why he passed on the chance to direct The Avengers.

Hello There! This is Adam Frazier and you are listening to Skull-Face Island, the official movie podcast of Geeks of DOom! As always I’m joined by Rosemary’s Baby Daddy, David Allen. And the Hansel to my Gretel, producer Tim Grant.

Today on the Show: We’ll discuss the latest installment in the James Bond franchise, Sam MendesSkyfall, starring Daniel Craig as 007. We’ll boot-up the Geek-O-Matic TeleFax for some breaking news: including Jamie Foxx in talks to play Electro in Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jaime King & Jamie Chung join Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Bryan Singer To Direct X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and Skyfall screenwriter John Logan is writing the next two James Bond movies.

For our third segment: Ladies and gentlemen, I want to welcome you to the treehouse for a debate that may destroy Skull-Face Island as we know it. And by that I mean, David and I may kill each other with word arrows and mind bullets, or at the least may never speak to each other again over the topic we are about to discuss… Star Wars.

James Bond Header

Everyone who worked on Skyfall must be pleased with the results because EON productions has already commissioned a Bond 24 and Bond 25. We previously reported that the upcoming two Bond films would have a cohesive story, kind of like how Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were linked. But it appears that rumor is untrue, as Daniel Craig has come out saying that it is “impossible to do a two-parter.”

In the initial report, Skyfall scribe John Logan presented a draft for a story that would play out over the course of two films. This would be the first time something like this would happen in the Bond franchise. The report also confirmed that Craig would return for at least two more Bond films.

James Bond Image

John Logan, the screenwriter who penned the latest entry in the James Bond series, Skyfall, has been confirmed as the writer for the next two installments as well.

Logan is said to have presented a story arc to producers that would play out over the course of the two movies, and that they liked it enough to immediately set him off to work on them. It’s also said that star Daniel Craig will be back for at least two more turns as Bond (after that is yet to be decided), so this may just be the grand finale they’ve been looking for to close out Craig and move on to the next if need be.

Naomie Harris Says Idris Elba Should Be The First Black James Bond

Idris Elba

Idris Elba (Prometheus, Thor) is the perfect candidate to become the next 007. He’s got swagger, he’s British, and he’s actually quite sexy. Should he accept the role – which won’t be available until after Daniel Craig completes two more Bond films – Elba would be the first non-Caucasian to play the elite MI6 spy. So how close is Elba to playing James Bond? Well according to Skyfall co-star Naomie Harris, it is pretty close.

During the press rounds for Skyfall, Harris was asked about who she would like to see play as the first black James Bond. She responded with Elba’s name and gave some interesting details to support her answer.

Listen To Adele’s Sultry James Bond Theme Song ‘Skyfall’

Skyfall Title

Ever since Daniel Craig became James Bond, the Bond theme songs have been so-so. Granted, there’s only been two songs, but the Jack White and Alicia Keys duet for Quantum of Solace was less than stellar. This time around, MGM and EON Productions have chosen soon-to-be music icon Adele to sing the theme for Skyfall. Now with the film just a few weeks away from its UK release, we are getting our first listen to Adele’s brand new song for the highly anticipated film. We have the player, you just have to listen. Check out the song here below.

The song is sexy, sultry, and smooth, and there are hints of Bond’s main theme layered within it. Powered by some awesome vocals, “Skyfall” is a great song to listen to. Skyfall opens in theaters in the UK on October 26 and the U.S. on November 9th, with IMAX shows on the 8th.
