The Monkey King in Journey to the West

I’m sure there are many Geeks of Doom readers in the ether of these intertubes that are familiar with the Chinese epic legend, Journey to the West. And those who are not will be familiar with many of its contemporary adaptations such as the cult-classic series Monkey (also known as Monkey Magic) or tersely ripped off in the awful Dragonball Z series (I’m waiting for the hate mail on that comment).

Well, be aware, fellow geeks, for something new adapted this way approaches – and I have to say, this looks like the maddest, most ridiculous, slapstick, and discombobulating version ever to be made. Directed by Derek Kok and Stephen Chow, the film (depending on what sources you dig up) seems to have three working titles internationally: Journey to the West, A Chinese Odyssey, and Odyssey, and is set for release in February in Hong Kong.

And after you see the trailer (embedded below), you will want it released here soon too!

Seth Rogen’s ‘Green Hornet’ Heaps Another Delay On Top

Green HornetThe Green Hornet has battled its way through some serious struggles on its trek to a theatrical release. Transferring from one pair of hands like Kevin Smith to the current set of caring hands, Seth Rogen, who is also leading the movie as Britt Reid. The struggle to find a director and actors, which began with Stephen Chow first attached to the job along with starring as Kato before he walked away from directing, and ultimately, the entire project. Since then, that little mess has been cleaned up with Michel Gondry hired to direct, and Taiwanese star Jay Chou cast as Kato.

The movie was first settled into a June 25, 2010 release date before moving back slightly to a July 9, 2010 date. Now it’s been confirmed that the movie has been given another hefty shove back to December 17, 2010 — a whole extra five months to wait…before filming has even started.

Edward James Olmos & Jay Chou Join Seth Rogen’s ‘Green Hornet’

Hornet

Seth Rogen‘s The Green Hornet has filled in some vacant roles, including the huge co-star role of Kato, which was long-expected to be handled by Stephen Chow.

The role of Kato was officially announced last week by Columbia Pictures. The part will be played by Jay Chou, a singer and actor from Taiwan who appeared in The Curse of the Golden Flower. Chou is definitely not as big as Stephen Chow, but it is pretty admirable that they’re giving the part to someone less known here in the States. It’s also a little confusing trying to figure out why they go for the star power in people like Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz, but a more obscure name for Kato. It should be interesting to see this all play out.

The Possible Sad, Sudden Death Of ‘The Green Hornet’

Hornet

Over the years, many news pieces have been produced in regard to The Green Hornet and it’s potential new movie specimen. Among these pieces were news of Kevin Smith making the movie, Kevin Smith not making the movie, Seth Rogen making the movie, and Seth Rogen getting Stephen Chow to star as Kato and direct the movie.

Since it was announced that Rogen was doing it with writer/friend Evan Goldberg, the project moved along smoothly and it really looked like something that was going to get done this time around.

Then came word that Stephen Chow was probably still going to play Kato, but no longer going to direct… or was it the other way around? No one really seemed sure what was going on, and with this, those big, dark clouds began to move in slowly.

Now comes word that as feared, The Green Hornet appears to be clinging to the weakest possible tuft of grass on top of the steepest of steep hills.

Seth Rogen’s ‘Green Hornet’ Will Start At The Beginning

HornetIn an interview with MTV, Seth Rogen let the world know that due to the severe lack of fans, The Green Hornet will start at the beginning and cover the origins of the Hornet and his pal Kato.

Rogen will be writing the script with Evan Goldberg and producing as well as supposedly playing Britt Reid. He also went to far away lands to grab the begging-to-be international star Stephen Chow to direct the flick and star as Kato.

No one gives a shit. There was, like, three people [who care about ‘Hornet’]. It [had to be] somewhat of [an origin story then]. We didn’t intend it to be one, but we realized that no one knows anything about the Green Hornet, and it actually became more confusing than anything that we didn’t include somewhat of an origin story. We realized through people being very confused with our screenplay that we should probably include somewhat of an origin in it.
