Pet Sematary cat Church 2019

So far, 2019 has already been a good year for cats in film. Last month’s Captain Marvel, the latest release for Marvel Studios, had an orange tabby named Goose play a major role in the superhero film, and in this weekend’s Pet Sematary, a Maine Coon cat named Church was front and center.

In the new Pet Sematary, a Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) moves his family, including their beloved cat, Winston “Church” Churchill, from Boston to a small town in Maine so they can live a quieter life. Unbeknownst to them, on their property is a pet cemetery, as well as a mysterious ancient burial ground. After the sweet and friendly Church is run over by a truck, Louis, under the guidance of his friendly elderly neighbor Jud (John Lithgow), buries the cat in the burial ground, a place where the dead rise. But when Church returns, he’s not the lovable lap cat he used to be, much to the family’s horror.

Pet Sematary
Based on the novel by Stephen King
Screen Story written by Mark Greenberg
Screenplay by Jeff Buhler
Directed by Kevin Kolsch & Dennis Widmyer
Starring Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, John Lithgow, Jeté Laurence
Di Bonaventura Pictures | Paramount Pictures
101 minutes | Rated R
Release date: April 5, 2019

Nostalgia is a powerful drug. I saw Mary Lambert’s 1989 big-screen interpretation of Stephen King’s novel Pet Sematary as a child and it was one of the first films to truly horrify me. I will forever be haunted by the ghastly performance of Andrew Hubatsek as the spinal meningitis-stricten Zelda. And the achilles tendon scene made me wear high-top sneakers throughout middle school. Having recently rewatched it as an adult, it’s a very flawed film. The 2019 remake/reimagining directed by Kevin Kolsch & Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) is a much better overall film, although one that will likely not leave the lasting impression of the original.

Creepshow TV Series Shudder

For anyone who’s not already aware, a TV series based on Stephen King and George A. Romero‘s 1982 horror anthology Creepshow is coming to Shudder. The movie featured a variety of terrifying tales, as well as a great cast including the late great Leslie Nielsen, four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris, fellow Oscar nominee Hal Holbrook, Viveca Lindfors, Ted Danson, and even King himself as a memorable lunkhead. It was also followed by a solid sequel in 1987.

Someone else who starred in the original is Adrienne Barbeau (Escape from New York, The Fog, Swamp Thing), appearing in the segment “The Crate.” And as it turns out, her time with Creepshow is not over yet. 37 years after starring in the original, she’s joined the cast of the TV series along with Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Jungle Book, Better Call Saul) and Tobin Bell (Saw, The Firm, Jigsaw).

The Dark Tower Image

Once upon a time, there were big, big plans for an adaptation of Stephen King‘s book series The Dark Tower. A trilogy of movies, joined by two seasons of an accompanying television series. But sometimes things don’t quite work out how they were planned.

We did eventually get a movie, but it fared poorly at the box office and even worse with critics. But the good news for fans of the books is that there is still a TV series in the works. The two just aren’t tied together anymore. The series is set up at Amazon, and now it appears that they have found their Gunslinger and Man in Black.

New ‘Pet Sematary’ TV Spot Teases Return Of Zelda

Pet Sematary (2019)

Paramount has released a new TV spot for Pet Sematary, the latest adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel of the same name.

The TV spot is extremely short at only 15 seconds, but it teases a character who will no doubt be of interest to fans of King’s book and the 1989 movie adaptation which stole sleep from so many: Zelda. The name alone causes me to start sweating nervously. I’ve never even played any of the video games because of it. OK so that’s all a bit of exaggeration, but that ’89 movie helped along greatly by Zelda did something very few movies have ever been able to do: terrify the ever-loving shit out of me.

You can check out the TV spot below.

Maximum Overdrive review

Maximum Overdrive
Vestron Video Collector’s Series
Blu-ray
Written and directed by Stephen King
Starring Emilio Estevez, Pat Hingle, Laura Harrington, Yeardley Smith, John Short
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: October 23, 2018

Maximum Overdrive marked the directorial debut of the most successful horror author of all time, Stephen King. The film and King’s direction were widely panned to the tune of 24% on Metacritic and a measly 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. Time has been kind however, as the film built a cult following over the years and now there’s a brand new collector’s edition Blu-ray out by Vestron Video.

Based on King’s short story “Trucks,” Maximum Overdrive is about a rag tag group of survivors battling sentient machines sprung to life due to a mysterious comet. While no one will confuse this with an Oscar-winning classic, or even a top King adaptation, there is a certain charm about this weird movie.
