In 2012, Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri teamed with writer Matt Hawkins to bring about an updated, re-imagined version of his cyber-enhanced super-team comic, Cyber Force. Celebrating twenty years since the series’ first launch, the creative team brought on illustrator Khoi Pham and began a Kickstarter campaign to raise enough funds to provide the first five issues completely free of charge! The first volume provides a great introduction of the characters and story for a Cyber Force newbie like myself.

Carin is the daughter of the chairman and chairwoman of the CDI — a powerful cybernetic research organization that has been the guiding light to the world for many years. When 16-year-old Carin discovers that her father plans to systematically annihilate the human species in order to start the world over, she goes in search Morgan Stryker — a genetically modified cyber-human whom she believes may be able to help prevent the devastating scenario from occurring. Taken in by a group of rogue SHOCS — cybernetic soldiers — who are now deemed terrorists by the CDI, Carin has little time to convince them of her father’s plans, gain their trust, and find the one man who can help them all.

Aphrodite IX #3 was a bit of a surprise to me. I had read and loved the original series, but this one is quite a far departure from that. That being said, it has its good and bad points like any comic.

Writer Matt Hawkins takes this long dormant title in a WHOLE different direction. And, I have to say, it’s OK. Not great, but not horrible either. The first few pages were a little hard to get through. His introduction is muddled and hard to follow if you’re new to the title like me. But, before too long, you get the gist of what the story is and the details of the world that the story is set in. After you’re settled in, the story gets pretty interesting. There’s decent amounts of character drama, action and intrigue.

Can you blame an assassin if she were literally created for such work and have no recollection of her actions afterwards? This is the moral conundrum issued in Top Cow’s Aphrodite IX #2. Written by Matt Hawkins with illustrations from Stjepan Sejic, we are thrust into the harsh, violent and dystopian future earth alongside Aphrodite as she tries to find her place in the new world.

The struggle continues between Marcus’ race of genetically altered humans and their cybernetic, humanoid enemies led by Executor Chronos. Unfortunately for Marcus and his people, their new ally, Aphrodite IX—the green-haired female powerhouse with no memory of her past—is in fact an assassin by design; and what Marcus and Aphrodite don’t realize is that she is being controlled by Chronos’ new ally and Aphrodite’s old handler, Robert J. Burch. Already unaware of killing Marcus’ father, the king, Aphrodite is on a new mission that could very well bring on the collapse of the kingdom.

Spring time is in the air, which can only mean one thing: Free Comic Book Day is upon us! To celebrate the occasion Matt Hawkins, the writer of Think Tank and Cyberforce who also moonlights as COO of Top Cow, is resurrecting Aphrodite IX from the vaults.

With a vague reference to a war-torn past of scarred atmospheres and moon colonies, Aphrodite IX #1 introduces us to a post-apocalyptic setting that’s equal parts fantasy, sci-fi, and cyberpunk. What little area of the planet is still habitable has been divided into two rival camps: a drake-riding, theocratic monarchy and a futuristic, totalitarian society of cybernetic-enhanced humans. A strain on the planet’s limited resources forced these two factions into battle.

Release Date: March 12, 2013
Cover Price: $14.99

Many times have I’ve read a book and thought that it would make a great comic. But never before have I read a comic that I felt really could have been an epic book – and Ravine is definitely that comic! I’m talking about a whole worldview that is set up here. It’s not just bits and pieces but there’s even a significant amount of history written up for it. This was obviously a massive undertaking.

There is an initial historic lead-in that establishes a volatile past but that quickly segues into the first of a multitude of storylines. I won’t get into them all, but there are several main characters that have important roles to play in this first graphic novel. From the cocky adventurer (and spirit led) Stein, who has more luck than sense but backs up his plays with some potent magic, to newly trained dragonrider Lynn, who isn’t the orphan everyone thinks she is. Throw in Valerius, the most recent Dragonlord, and you get a cast that will definitely find trouble…if it doesn’t find them first. Little do they know they are but pawns in a bigger game, one that is being orchestrated by someone thought long dead…someone who wants to rebuild that which they lost.

Release Date: February 6, 2013
Cover Price: $3.99

Son of Merlin #1 took me immediately back to the late 1990s when Matt Hawkins launched his Lady Pendragon universe for Image. That’s basically what this is, just updated for current times.

First off, Robert Place Napton was a great choice for writer for this series. He’s got the experience doing this kind of book, and that helps a lot. What I liked about this comic is that it’s Merlin and Morgan in modern times. They’re not pulled through a portal and are now fish out of water; instead, they’ve been living continuously from ancient times right up until now. And, from the looks of things, they’ve been fighting a war since they first became enemies. Now, this book IS called The Son of Merlin, so obviously, the son of Merlin actually comes into play in this issue. As much fun as I had with this book, Merlin’s son turns out to be the fish out of water in this book. It’s the typical “I’m a man of science, I don’t believe in magic” that we’re seen in a lot of comics before this, so I hope that future issues steer away from that.

Talk about the mother lode! Artifacts: The Deluxe Edition contains just about every Top Cow character you can name…and maybe even a few you don’t know. 448 pages of awesome art and great stories is seldom to be found, but this series does it in style!

Thirteen artifacts of arcane power exist in the world and one individual is making it his business to bring them together for his own selfish reasons. Twelve are well known but the last one is shrouded in mystery. Through manipulation and mayhem, this man creates perfectly constructed scenarios that bring the necessary pieces within his range. Some come willingly, others are taken from their owners, but in the end he has to have all of them in one place to bring about the results he needs.
