Styx The Grand Illusion

Saturday night, I discovered that I have a new music cable channel called Palladia and they were showing a new concert from Styx called Styx: Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight – Live, which will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on January 29, 2013. Now, Styx happens to be one of my favorite classic rock bands ever, and having seen them live tens of times, I was definitely interested in checking out this concert, where they play both of the amazing albums in the title in their entirety. During my research, I discovered that 7 of their greatest albums are on sale right now for $6 and under, and I would be remiss if I didn’t share this information with you.

Listed below are the albums, all originally released from 1975-1983, on sale for $6 and under in both CD and MP3 formats; all the listed CDs are “AutoRip,” which means if you purchase the CD, you’ll ALSO get the MP3 version for free; therefore, if the CD is cheaper than the MP3 version, then definitely get the CD, so you’ll get both formats for less. (Note – not every format for every title is on sale, but I’ve listed it here for consistency.) I’ve also included for each album the release date and some of its most famous tunes.

Equinox (1975)
CD $5.99 | MP3 $5.00
Light Up, Suite Madame Blue, Lorelei

Crystal Ball (1976)
CD $5.99 | MP3 $5.00
Crystal Ball, Mademoiselle

The Grand Illusion (1977)
CD $4.99 | MP3 $5.00
The Grand Illusion, Fooling Yourself, Come Sail Away

Pieces of Eight (1978)
CD $4.99 | MP3 $9.49
Blue Collar Man, Renegade, Sing for the Day

Cornerstone (1979)
CD $4.99 | MP3 $5.00
Babe, Lights, Boat on the River

Paradise Theatre (1981)
CD $3.99 | MP3 $9.49
The Best of Times, Too Much Time on My Hands, Rockin’ the Paradise

Kilroy Was Here (1983)
CD $5.99 | MP3 $5.00
Mr. Roboto, Don’t Let It End, Don’t Let It End

Styx Greatest Hits

Ok, so remember when I wrote about how Amazon is currently offering 100 Albums for $5 Each in MP3 format through the end of the month?

I looked through the list a bunch of times to pick a few of great deals to write about, yet somehow I overlooked this Greatest Hits album by Styx. That’s 16 songs for only $5 and if you’re not sure if you dig Styx, trust me, you’ve sung the tunes on this album before: “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Babe,” and “The Best Of Times.”

Still feigning ignorance? You know you the words “Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto (Domo)” have come out of your mouth before, so don’t even front. Yes, “Mr. Roboto” is on this hits album, too.

Other popular tunes on this greatest hits package are “Blue Collar Man,” “Lady,” “Fooling Yourself,” and of course “Come Sail Away,” the latter tune made popular for this generation thanks to Cartman on South Park.

pink floyd dark side of the moonThrough the end of January 2011, Amazon is offering up classic rock albums for only $5.00 each in MP3 format. If you purchase MP3s through Amazon, it downloads into your iTunes account, so it’s as simple as purchasing directly through iTunes. Also, you can now gift these MP3 purchases – just click the “Give album OR song as gift” button on the right on the product page.

I’ve written about my love of Pink Floyd tons of times already, so I have to mention that one of the albums on sale for only $5.00 is Dark Side Of The Moon, so if you don’t already own this album, definitely grab it now, it’s insanely amazing.

Other albums available for $5.00 each are John Lennon‘s Power To The People – The Hits, which has 15 of Lennon’s solo hits like “Imagine,” “Instant Karma,” and “Woman”; Free‘s Fire And Water, singer Paul Rodgers’s first band and contains their hit “All Right Now,” and Styx‘s Crystal Ball.

10 Rock Bands That Replaced Their Lead Singer

In the history of rock music, band members have come and gone, but nothing is more controversial or dangerous then installing a new lead singer in an established rock outfit. Does it help or hinder to replace your frontman or is it just plain blasphemy to even consider this practice?

This November, prog-rock band Yes will be embarking on a 40th anniversary tour without their lead singer Jon Anderson, who was forced to bow out because of illness. In Anderson’s stead on Yes’s “In the Present” tour will be Benoit David, who sings in a few Yes tribute bands out of Montreal, Canada.

Depending on fan reaction, this former tribute singer is either headed for superstardom or is very doomed.

Here’s a look at 10 rock bands that have replaced their lead singer and the subsequent outcome of their decisions.
