‘Super’…The Animated Series?!

BAADASSSSS!   |

James Gunn, the former Troma Films writer who hit pay dirt with the script for the 2004 Zack Snyder-directed remake of Dawn of the Dead and made his directorial debut in 2006 with the sci-fi horror comedy Slither, has uncovered something very interesting which he linked to his Twitter feed just recently.

Animation company Toonsmyth Productions has put together a 90-second video trailer for a mock cartoon based on Gunn’s most recent film, the subversive superhero comedy Super that starred Rainn Wilson as a lonely and disturbed man who becomes a costumed crimefighter named the Crimson Bolt, in the hope that some network might pick it up for a series, possibly the Cartoon Network for their Adult Swim line-up. You can watch the video here below.

Super Blu–raySuper
DVD I Blu-ray
DIRECTOR: James Gunn
WRITER: James Gunn
STARRING: Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, Gregg Henry, Sean Gunn
IFC Films
RELEASE DATE: August 9, 2011

Just recently I reviewed a little indie flick called Griff the Invisible, one of three fairly recent movies about normal everyday folks creating and becoming their own superheros. The other two are 2010’s Kick–Ass, and director James Gunn‘s Super. At the time, I said that the three movies shouldn’t be compared (having a basic understanding of Super but not having seen it yet), and now, having seen all three, this is confirmed: all three are unique in their own special ways, and all three are very much worth seeing.

Super tells the story of Frank D’Arbo (Rainn Wilson), a lowly and rather pathetic man who works as a cook at a local diner. Frank only has two “perfect moments” in his life: when he married his wife, Sarah (Liv Tyler)—a recovering drug addict he met at work—and when he pointed the cops in the direction of a purse–snatching criminal.

Title Character In New Film ‘Hesher’ Inspired By Cliff Burton From Metallica

MetallicaThe title character of Hesher, in the upcoming movie produced by Natalie Portman and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was inspired by the late Metallica bass guitarist, Cliff Burton. Gordon-Levitt revealed the inspiration during a recent interview, in which he discussed how he based his performance of the iconic metal god’s behavior.

Apparently, according to Gordon-Levitt, the current members of Metallica weren’t informed of the basis of the character before seeing the film, and were surprisingly reminded of the much-loved but long lost band member from years gone by. Burton is highly respected and lovingly remembered by the fans as well, so it will be interesting to see fan reaction to the performance as well.

Super - Rainn Wilson

The first full trailer for James Gunn‘s Super is now online.

Check out the trailer here below.

The film stars Rainn Wilson as Frank D’Arbo, an ordinary man who transforms himself into a crimefighting superhero called Crimson Bolt after his wife (Liv Tyler) leaves him for a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon). While not the best superhero, Frank has at least one person who believes in him — a young girl named Libby (Ellen Page) who becomes his “kid sidekick” Boltie. Nathan Fillion also stars as the superhero The Holy Avenger.

Scream Awards 2010: First Clip From James Gunn’s ‘Super’

One of the highlights of Spike’s 2010 Scream Awards came by way of James Gunn‘s new movie, Super.

Super made a splash at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con 2010 (Read: SDCC 2010: James Gunn’s ‘Super’ Panel With Nathan Fillion, Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page & More!), where attendees were first introduced to the dark new superhero comedy. During their panel, a clip was shown featuring star Rainn Wilson dealing with an inconsiderate gentleman who cuts in line. This is the same clip that was shown last night, and now we can all appreciate how good this flick looks.

The movie is being compared to Kick-Ass, with regular everyday people becoming superheroes (or their best attempt at what we know as superheros), and it’s said to be hilarious but with a lot of very dark and dramatic moments as well. This clip gives us just a taste of these elements.

Head on down to the bottom of this post right now to get your first peek at the new movie, Super.

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

SDCC 2010: Super Panel: Rainn Wilson 03Another highly entertaining panel that was held during San Diego Comic Con 2010 was the one for James Gunn‘s hero movie, Super. Gunn is best known as the director of the wonderful horror-comedy Slither, and he also wrote the screenplays for Scooby-Doo and Dawn of the Dead.

Super had one of the better panel lineups, bringing out Gunn, stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Nathan Fillion, Liv Tyler, Michael Rooker, and producers Ted Hope and Miranda Bailey.

The movie sounds like it’s along the same lines as Kick-Ass where people without superpowers fight evil. In it, Wilson plays the lead character, who calls himself the Crimson Bolt. He has no powers, but he does have a wrench he likes to use in confrontational situations. Looking at the cast and concept, you would think this was primed for gut-busting humor, but apparently it’s a very dark comedy with a lot of dramatic situations.
