The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens up just as Katniss and Peeta, the winners of the 74th Hunger Games, are preparing to go on their victory tour of the 12 Districts and Capital of Panem and trying to find a rhythm to their now dual lives – the theatrical star-crossed lovers while in the spotlight and the barely acquaintances when the camera is off in their ever-dwindling private lives. As their tour begins, the pair sees from district to district signs of rebellion and discourse against the Capital by the citizens, the unplanned consequence of their televised defiance against the game’s rules during the events of The Hunger Games.

The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook
From Lamb Stew to “Groosling” – More than 150 Recipes Inspired by The Hunger Games Trilogy
By Emily Ansara Baines
Adams Media
Release Date: December 1, 2011
Hardcover | Kindle

Full disclosure, I cannot cook at all. My best attempts at baking, in any capacity, end with small yet fierce kitchen fires and more wounds than an amateur snake-handler. So, when the opportunity for me to review The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook rolled around, I had to take it. After all, who better to judge than someone who is easily confused and frightened by the art of cooking?

The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook sells itself as a companion to the dual lives of the book’s protagonist, Katniss. Half of the cookbook is dedicated to hearty salt of the earth style dishes, while the other half concerns itself with the decadent dishes that would be found in the Capitol. Seeing as how most of my meals are hastily eaten in front of a computer screen, I figured that a decadent recipe would be a nice change of pace.

RELEASE DATE: August 17, 2012

Before a movie adaptation of The Hunger Games was announced, I knew not one thing about it, not even the title. Going into finally seeing the movie for myself, I knew it was based on a wildly popular book series and whatever small story and character tidbits picked up while writing about various casting news and such. This is how I prefer going into any movie, whether it be an adaptation or sequel or completely original, so that there is no expectation whatsoever.

The premise is simple, yet also quite brutal. After an apocalyptic event transforms North America, a wealthy government called the Capitol takes total control over the less-wealthy people and forms them into thirteen districts. After an uprising by the people ultimately results in the destruction of one of the districts, an unthinkable punishment is put into effect to keep everyone in check: each year, one boy and one girl ages 12-18 from each of the twelve districts will be selected at random to compete in the Hunger Games, where all 24 will fight to the death until only one remains.

The Hunger Games

Lionsgate is not wasting any time when it comes to The Hunger Games, their franchise based on the series of books by author Suzanne Collins.

After the first movie blasted into theaters and threw down huge numbers, we found out that the studio was hiring Francis Lawrence to direct its sequel, Catching Fire, because the first movie’s director, Gary Ross, didn’t feel he would have enough time to prepare, develop, and actually make the sequel by the planned November 22, 2013 release date.

Now comes word that, before Lawrence even begins filming Catching Fire, Lionsgate is already actively seeking out a director to handle the two-film finale, Mockingjay.

Hunger Games - Catching Fire

This news is a few days old now, but for those who have not yet heard, a director has been chosen to fill in the space vacated by The Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross for the upcoming sequel, Catching Fire.

Stepping in for the blockbuster sequel, currently set for release on November 22, 2013, will be Francis Lawrence. Lawrence, who has directed such titles as I Am Legend, Water For Elephants, and Constantine, appears to have been chosen only because he was one of the few whose schedule was clear…something that may not bode well for the constantly growing fanbase.

The Hunger Games

Lionsgate recently made it clear that they had every intention to bring back The Hunger Games director Gary Ross for the sequel, Catching Fire, after rumors began swirling that he wouldn’t be returning.

But apparently Lionsgate’s intentions, no matter how persuasive, have failed them. It’s being reported that Ross has informed the studio that he will not be jumping back into the director’s chair for Catching Fire, and Lionsgate is said to be “in shock” over the decision.

Read a statement from Ross below, as well as one from Lionsgate.

The Hunger Games District 12

Are you a rabid fan of The Hunger Games, the mega hit first movie based on Suzanne Collins‘ popular book series? If so, you now have the option to purchase the entire town that was transformed into District 12, the home district of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson).

The town’s real name is Henry River Mill Village, and it’s located about 70 miles away from Asheville, North Carolina. 83-year-old Wade Sheperd owns the 72-acre property and states that he’s getting far too many visitors to the town with little to no profit coming his way because of it, leading him to the decision to sell the whole thing for just $1.4 million (or around 35,000 easy payments of $39.99!).
