Rocky Poster

Rocky, the 1976 film in which a down on his luck boxer gets an improbable shot at the World Championship, and made a superstar and eventual Hollywood legend into its star and writer Sylvester Stallone, celebrates its 40th anniversary today.

Originally released in the United States on November 21, 1976, Rocky gave a jolting uppercut to the industry that was only just handling what a true blockbuster was thanks to the overwhelming success of JAWS, released about 15 months prior. Before that, films in Hollywood that weren’t Best Picture winners were gritty and tough with uneasy and uncensored narratives, awash with characters and plots that didn’t always end sunny and resolute. With Rocky, there was a re-ushering in the industry and the theaters of the type of story that hadn’t existed since the heyday of these types of films churned out in the 1940s, where boxers were Palooka Joe-style guys who had mob ties and odds that they always overcame by the last reel. Whereas the genre became a dried-up dime a dozen by the mid-20th century, Rocky was a fresh jolt in the arm of Hollywood. Only the most curmudgeonly critics couldn’t be swayed by their built-in cynicism to give it the free pass of the fresh air that it deserved for being the kind of necessarily for the times throwback film that it was.

Rumor: Elizabeth Debicki To Play Main Villain In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’

Elizabeth Debicki

The Marvel rumor mill can’t seem to stop spinning. Following the rumor that Thor: Ragnarok will incorporate the “Planet Hulk” story arc, comes rumors about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The sequel is currently filming at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, and we still know very little about it aside from the fact that Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) are probably protecting the galaxy while causing all sorts of trouble.

As little as we know about the plot, we even know less about the new actors that will be joining the cast for the sequel. Aside from the fact that Pom Klementieff will play Mantis, Chris Sullivan is Taserface, Tommy Flanagan will be Tullk, we know that Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell will star in the film as well with one of them presumably playing Star-Lord’s long-lost father, but that is just speculation. This new rumor is centered on Elizabeth Debicki (The Night Manager) and the character she will be playing. More on the story below.

A great fighter once said, “It’s not about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

Co-written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station), Creed stars Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station, Fantastic Four) as Adonis Johnson, the son of legendary boxer Apollo Creed – Carl Weathers’ fleet-footed fighter from the Rocky franchise.

The product of an extramarital affair, Adonis never knew his famous father, who died in the ring during a bout with Ivan Drago in 1985’s Rocky IV. After losing his mother, Adonis grew up in foster homes before his penchant for fighting landed him in juvenile detention. Adonis gets a second chance in Creed’s widow, Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashād), who takes the boy in.

Creed header

Warner Brothers has released a brand new trailer for Creed, the spinoff to the Rocky franchise that focuses on Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the son of Rocky Balboa’s former foe and eventual best friend Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). The film centers on Adonis, a raw and undisciplined fighter who Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) saves from prison, then trains to become the fighter he was destined to be. Standing in Adonis’ way is his past, the shadow of his father, and the anxiety of being labelled a loser because of his fighting heritage.

Apollo Creed Rocky

Rocky Balboa may have had iconic boxing matches in the Rocky film franchise run, but none are more memorable than the first two films where he goes up against Apollo Creed. Rocky’s former rival turned friend met an unfortunate end in Rocky IV, when a crushing blow delivered by Ivan Drago killed him. But Apollo’s legacy did not end with his death. In the Ryan Coogler film Creed, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) has the potential to be a great boxer like his father, and the person to help him hone his skills is none other than Rocky (Sylvester Stallone).

Now, a newly released photo reveals the training process the two characters are undergoing to prep for an upcoming fight in the film. Hit the jump for more.

Apollo Creed Rocky

Warner Brothers and MGM released the official synopsis for Creed, the Rocky spinoff set to hit theaters this November. This time, the fighter who needs focus is Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan, The Fantastic Four), the son of the late “master of disaster” Apollo Creed. So who do you turn to when you want to become the greatest fighter in the world? The Italian Stallion, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), of course.

Check out the full official synopsis for Creed here below.

No word on what the “deadly” is in the synopsis that Balboa will be facing. We can assume it is an illness or injury. But what I think we can definitely look forward to is an inspirational underdog story, including a workout montage with music that will make you want to go back to the gym. And isn’t that all we really want from Rocky?

Rocky Steps

Since the release of Rocky in 1977 and its sequels lots and lots and lots of people have run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, just as Rocky himself (played by Sylvester Stallone) did as part of his training regiment in the movies. There’s even a statue there that was used in Rocky III.

Recently a group of friends visiting Philly did the same thing all of these other fans of the movies have done. But instead of finding just steps or the Rocky statue, this particular group of friends found the real Rocky, Stallone himself, there.

You can check out the picture they took of the encounter below.
