This week, Chinese hackers infiltrate U.S. newspaper networks, Twitter also gets hacked, Oreo takes advantage of the Super Bowl blackout, is Netflix’s full season release schedule the future of television…or a big mistake, will your body be the next unlimited storage device, and if you thought J.J. Abrams hit the motherlode last week for helming both Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, you ain’t heard nothin’ yet!

Psycho

Somewhere, Alfred Hitchcock is slowly rotating in his grave.

Plans are afoot to bring the Psycho films to television in a predictable manner. Inspired perhaps by the recent wave of successful cable horror shows like True Blood and American Horror Story, A&E is developing an original series based on the 1960 suspense classic and grandfather of the slasher movie.

Area 51

Uber-producer and former Mrs. James Cameron Gale Anne Hurd (Aliens, The Walking Dead) has a new television project, and this time rather than focus on a world besieged by undead cannibals Hurd is looking to explore the mysteries of the unknown that exist within our own borders, and I’m not just talking about the popularity of Snuggies.

The producer is developing a television series based on the recently published non-fiction book Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base by Annie Jacobsen.

Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job: Season 5 DVDTim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
DVD
Season Cinco
Starring Tim Heidecker, Eric Wareheim, Richard Dunn, David Liebe Hart, James Quall
Cartoon Network
Release Date: May 17, 2011

To watch Adult Swim’s Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! is to subject yourself to an experience akin to sitting in the audience of a lethal injection while dwarves in clown makeup throw individually-wrapped slices of cheese on the walls and floor-mounted speakers blast out the immortal eardrum-bleeding ditty “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” by Tiny Tim at different volumes and various revolution speeds. When it’s all over you will find that you’ve laughed, cringed, recoiled in stark horror, and sat in front of your television set wondering just what the fuck that was all about. This is a show that the late comedy writer Michael O’Donoghue, a.k.a. Saturday Night Live‘s Mr. Mike, would have found immensely entertaining. After all, what is O’Donoghue’s Mr. Mike’s Mondo Video if not a Tim & Eric prototype, only much stranger?

CBS Renews ‘Big Bang Theory’ Through 2014

SheldonCBS announced a deal to renew hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory for another three years through the 2013-14 television season.

The show, which stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, and Kaley Cuoco, has always been a hit with geeks for its witty, scientifically accurate dialog, and frequent references to pop culture. However, the last season has seen a huge ratings boost coupled with more media attention — making a long-term renewal a no-brainer for the studio.

It also helps that 2010 was a particularly good year for Parsons, whose portrayal of Sheldon Cooper won not only a 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series but also a Golden Globe win this year for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series, Comedy or Musical.

Today has brought news from a variety of sources that the SyFy Channel has canceled its low-rated but very excellent (in this humble viewer’s opinion) series Caprica.

Speaking about the cancellation, Mark Stern, Executive Vice-President of Original Programming said, “We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series, Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.” The show will stop running new episodes as of this week’s (October 26th, 2010) episode, with the remaining five episodes of the season to run at some point early next year.

Video: 22 TV Theme Songs in 7 Minutes

22 TV theme songs in 7 minutesI love TV theme songs. They can be iconic, memorable, and nostalgic all at the same time. Some tell the tale of the show, some work only in context of the show, and some are actually better than the show they are attached to.

College Humor has a great video of 22 television theme songs being played in 7 minutes and I thought all of our faithful TV watchers would enjoy it. Watch the video — 22 TV Themes in 7 Minutes — here below.

It’s not just any 22 theme songs, it’s some of the best like The Office, Firefly, That 70’s Show, and Family Guy.

If you like this style, check out the original, 32 Songs in 8 Minutes. Both videos were done by Fredrik Larsson (and only him, no matter how many of him you see in these videos). Check out his site at freddegredde.com.
