Pixar The Good Dinosaur

Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur has had its share of production problems throughout the years. Midway through production, Bob Peterson, who was the film’s original director, was dismissed from the project due to difficulties trying to crack the movie’s third act. But as we would soon discover, the film’s story was suffering as a whole, and ultimately it was pushed back almost a year from its original release date. While the delay can be considered overwhelmingly demoralizing, it did help in the filmmakers’ efforts to figure out the story. Soon enough, with the help of the Pixar Brain Trust, the The Good Dinosaur‘s narrative problems were fixed. Peterson was replaced by Pixar’s story artist/animator and sometime voice artist, Peter Sohn (Ratatouille, Monsters University), while Denise Ream stayed on as producer to help the Korean-American filmmaker.

Sohn and Ream talked to Geeks Of Doom and a group of our fellow journalists during the film’s press day about how emotionally draining it could be when you find out that one of the films you have been working so hard on gets hit with delays. But they also talked about how the film draws its inspiration from the great Westerns that are rarely made nowadays, as well as making The Good Dinosaur with very limited dialogue.

The story of a boy and his dog gets a new prehistoric spin in Disney and Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur. The story asks the age-old question, what would have happened if the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs had missed? Well, in the film, we learn that the dinosaurs become productive members of society that adapted to their natural surroundings. There lies one of the things that makes this film so beautiful. Even with its storied production problems the film has gone through, the studio has managed to rise above it all and give out something that is not only beautiful aesthetically, but emotionally as well.

Arlo, a skittish Apatosaurus with a big heart, is separated from his family. Scared and alone, our hero must find his way home before the cold winter comes. On his journey he comes across sights he has never seen before, and meets an unlikely companion who joins him on his course home – a human boy, whom he names Spot. Together, they learn that they have more in common with each other than they originally thought despite their difference in species, and together they find that they can have the courage to overcome any fear they will encounter on their journey home.

The Good Dinosaur header photo

Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur suffered a huge setback when production had to be overhauled. With the film having to basically start from square one, a majority of those working on it from animation to the cast had to start anew. And for the cast,it meant that their parts were scrubbed, and eventually replaced with an entirely new cast, with an entirely new story.

Despite these huge changes, Pixar managed to get through it all, and come out with a beautiful film about family and maturity. We were invited to sit down with a group of our fellow journalists to talk a little bit about the film with its stars Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2) and Raymond Ochoa (Fallout 4).

Just below, find out what these two had to say about their recording sessions, their favorite Pixar film, and more.

The Good Dinosaur

Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur may not look like it at first, but it does have some aspects of a Western that you would see in the rarely seen genre. In the upcoming animated film, Sam Elliot (Tombstone, Justified), Anna Paquin (True Blood, X-Men: Days of Future Past), and AJ Buckley (Justified, Narcos) provide the voices for Butch, Ramsey, and Nash, respectively, a family of T-Rexes who also happen to be cattle ranchers. They are just like any family in a western film, they have a very deep bond with each other, and are fascinated by the incredible stories their father tells. Together, they help Arlo get home, as long as the skittish apatosaurus is able to help them draw out some nasty rustlers who are stealing their cattle.

Geeks Of Doom was invited to sit down with the three film stars along with a group of our fellow journalists during the press day for The Good Dinosaur. During that time, the three actors talked about how weird Pop Vinyls look, finding the voice and the roars to their characters, being a part of the Pixar legacy, and much more. Check out our interview with the three actors here below.
