Blu-ray Review: The Losers

The Losers Blu-ray DVDThe Losers
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Sylvain White
Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Columbus Short, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Oscar Jaenada, Jason Patric
Warner Bros Home Video
Release date: July 20, 2010

The Losers, based on a DC comic, isn’t merely hell-bent on expressing violence like recent comic book adaptations (Jonah Hex). There is a method behind its outrageous madness. Externally The Losers and violence are mutually inseparable, finding pleasure in things that go BOOM, but internally is where it separates itself from the Jonah Hexes out there and undergoes an operation that is primarily inspired by one emotion: revenge. This intense sense of emotion is precisely what the picture needs because it has an actor in Jeffrey Dean Morgan who can construct a character who is riddled with guilt to perfection. We have seen him do it before in Watchmen, a film in some instances The Losers represents.

The similarities that can be found in both films have to do with the idea of abandonment and betrayal. Extending beyond violence, director Sylvain White finds a potent force that can withstand the over excessive amount of violence the picture contains. That force deals with humane elements. In Watchmen the heroes are depressed due to authorities and citizens questioning their true colors. The heroes are then wounded by the abandonment of such people. In The Losers a group of five highly trained Special Ops workmen led by Clay (Morgan) are stained with the same kind of abandonment.

Spoiler Talk: The Losers
space

The LosersThe Losers is one of my favorite comics that showed me that not all comics have to be complicated and bogged down by continuity and details. Sometimes comics can be just an enjoyable, action-packed thrill ride. So, needless to say, I was extremely excited when I saw that this was coming to the big screen — I was overjoyed! I still strongly believe that this movie could have been marketed so much better and made so much more money, but that is a different story all together.

I definitely enjoyed this movie more than any other movie I have watched this entire year. I’ve already watched it twice and will probably see it again. It had that great popcorn action flick feel just like the comic did. It was a fun action movie that just kept on going all the way through the end and didn’t drag even for a second.

Unlike Kick-Ass, The Losers is a very close adaptation of the first volume of the comic and can people will easily see where the story is coming from. In fact, the casting in this movie was near perfect and Cougar, who is my favorite in the comic, is also my favorite in the movie. I really hope this movie does well because I would love to see the sequel be made because of its success. Anyways, enough of the small talk let’s get to the SPOILER TALK!

Below are my spoilerific thoughts on the movie The Losers. Don’t forget to add your spoiler-laden musings at the end in the comments section.

2010-04-25-losersThe Losers
Directed by Sylvain White
Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Jason Patric
Rated PG-13
Release date: April 23, 2010

If you had told me that someday we would see a movie based on the DC/Vertigo comic series, The Losers, I would have been surprised. Not that the series, written by Andy Diggle with art (mainly) by Jock didn’t deserve to be made into a movie. Far from it, as the series was a big budget action movie put onto the page. It just seemed unlikely that we would see it. However, the Hollywood gods have seen fit to translate it into the blockbuster it was envisioned as.

The Losers follows a squad of special forces who are forced to track down a shadowy figure named Max after they are burned on an operation. Max (Jason Patric) is supposed to be some big CIA spook and the Losers have to track him down so they can clear their name. The plot is mostly an excuse to get them from one action scene to the next, as Max is never fully fleshed out and his motives are never made very clear. He is just an excuse for the main characters to find something they can blow up.

Watch Now: First Trailer For Comic Book Adaptation ‘The Losers’

The Losers #1

The first official trailer for The Losers is now online. Even better, you’ll be happy to know, is that it looks like it could be a hell of a lot of fun.

This is a pleasant surprise and possible proof that resume don’t always make the talent. The movie is directed by Sylvain White, who has previously directed I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer and Stomp the Yard, which naturally lead us all to become worried about this project. We won’t know for sure until the movie comes out, but again, there’s lots of promising stuff going on here.

The Losers is an adaptation of a Vertigo comic book series of the same name by Andy Diggle and Jock that ran from 2003 to 2006. That comic book is also an adaptation in its own right, being based on a WWII-based comic also of the same name that debuted in the good ol’ 70s.

If you’ll be so kind as to proceed to the bottom of this post, you can watch the new trailer and judge for yourself!

Geek Peek: First Official Synopsis & Images From ‘The Losers’

The Losers #1

Another comic book being adapted into a movie that is showing off some of its brand new images is The Losers. The movie is based on the Vertigo comic of the same name that is created and written by Andy Diggler, with artwork done by Jock. These two new images from the movie are not the most exciting images you’ll ever see — you will not get goosebumps — but for you hardcore fans of the comic or some of the stars, this is your first chance to get a look at them dressed up (or down) in full character.

The Losers is directed by Sylvain White, who has previously directed I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, and Stomp the Yard. It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen, Grey’s Anatomy) as Clay, Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Sunshine) as Jensen, Zoë Saldana (Star Trek, Avatar) as Aisha, Jason Patric (The Lost Boys, Narc) as Max, Óscar Jaenada (Che: Part Two) as Cougar, Idris Elba (The Wire, American Gangster) as Rogue, and Columbus Short (Quarantine, Whiteout) as Pooch.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Joining ‘The Losers’

The Movie God   |  @   |

LosersJeffrey Dean Morgan — the man behind The Comedian in the upcoming Watchmen movie — is in negotiations to star in The Losers, which is also based on a comic book.

The Losers comes from Vertigo Comics and tells the tale of a Special Forces team who is ultimately betrayed and left to die, which they obviously do not do. When they gather themselves, they form their own little team and set off on a classic revenge mission. On said mission, they’ll uncover the surely evil intentions of their former leader and ultimate betrayer and attempt to remove their names from a CIA death list.

The Losers is also loosely based on a comic from DC Comics called Losers, which is set in World War II, while this story takes place in a more modern time and with our current war as a backdrop.
