Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water

The winners of the 2018 Producers Guild of America Awards were announced recently. The winners often are an indicator of who will win the top awards. So in the case for films, it will tell us who will win the Academy Award for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. In fact, the PGAs have correctly matched the Oscar for Best Picture in 19 of its 28 years. However, La La Land proved to be one of the exceptions last year, as it won the PGA, but lost to Moonlight for Best Picture.

This year, The Shape of Water, Coco, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Black Mirror came out as the big winners. Check out the full list of winners below.

Guillermo del Toro Directing The Shape of Water

Awards season is already in full swing with the HFPA having awarded the Golden Globes this past weekend, and the LAOFCS announcing their winners last month. Often times, they are an indicator of who will end up being nominated or winning an Academy Award. However, actors, writers, producers, and directors in respective guilds and societies have their own awards that recognize its members. We’ve already seen nominations from SAG, WGA, and PGA, and now the Directors Guild of America have released their own nominees for film and TV.

Among those honored are Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, Jordan Peele for Get Out, and Aaron Sorkin for Molly’s Game. There’s also Christopher Nolan for Dunkirk and Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Check out the full list below.

All are likely to get more nominations as we get closer to the Academy Awards announcing their own nominations.

Movies of 2017 top ten header

To say that 2017 was an incredible year for films would be a vast understatement. The year was full of extraordinary films ranging from the typical blockbuster tentpoles like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Wonder Woman to the indie darlings like The Big Sick and Lady Bird. And the best thing about it, a lot of these movies come from first-time directors, women, and veterans like Jordan Peele, Patty Jenkins, Greta Gerwig, and Rian Johnson. It’s not easy to see all of the films that are released within the one calendar year, but I make sure I damn well try to see as much as I can, and 2017 was no different. I went out to see over 100 films, and to narrow it down to 10 best within the field of exceptional titles that were released was hard. While best is subjective, I tried to narrow it down to the 10 films that meant the most to me that I enjoyed thoroughly.

So, you’ll find the 10 of my favorite movies of 2017 that I could not stop thinking about, along with a few honorable mentions. Check them all out here below.

The Shape of Water Header

The Shape of Water
Written by Guillermo Del Toro & Vanessa Taylor
Directed by Guillermo Del Toro
Starring Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones, Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Jenkins
Fox Searchlight
Rated R | 123 Minutes
Release Date: December 15, 2017

You know pretty much when walking into a Guillermo del Toro movie that you’re in for a visual masterclass in filmmaking. Even the films of his I didn’t love (Hellboy 1 & 2, Crimson Peak) were beautiful to watch. But the films where he matches the visuals and production design with tour de force acting and writing become classics. Pan’s Labyrinth is one of most incredible films I have ever watched and The Shape of Water echoed it, exchanging the Spanish Civil War for The Cold War, and switching the lead protagonist from a young girl to an adult woman. It is beautiful, not just in imagery, but in characters. Like Pan’s, there’s a psychotic and powerful antagonist and an epic performance by the “Master of Disguise,” Doug Jones, this time as the “Amphibian Man.”

The Shape of Water

The SAG Awards honor and recognize the best the performances of the year, and are often seen as an early indicator of who will win the Academy Awards for Best Actor and Actress, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Basically, each guild has their own awards ceremony to honor those within the industry and guild. And now that awards season is in full swing we are about to get to see more and more names being nominated for their work.

Following yesterday’s Golden Globe nominees, comes the SAG nominations. And what you will see is a strange disparity between the two as The Shape of Water got shut out of the Best Ensemble, while The Big Sick got recognized for Best Supporting Actress and Best Ensemble. Check out the nominations below.

A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, Guillermo del Toro was fascinated as a child by fairy tales, ghost stories, and monster movies that ignited his imagination and compelled him to tell his own stories. When he started writing and directing films, those influences laid the foundation for del Toro’s uniquely expressive approach to genre filmmaking – a return to the dark romanticism of Universal horror films like 1931’s Frankenstein and Dracula.

Best known for his three Spanish-language films that upend conventional genre storytelling, Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, and Pan’s Labyrinth, del Toro weaves vivid phantasmagorias that capture the beauty and the horror of the human experience. His supernatural epics are equally as inventive, from Blade II and the Hellboy series, to Pacific Rim and his gothic romance, Crimson Peak. His new film, The Shape of Water, is the culmination of del Toro’s career thus far – the summation of everything the filmmaker has learned, refined and perfected.
