Free Comic Book Day banner

Well, folks, it is that time again. It’s time for Free Comic Book Day! On May 6, 2017, comic and book shops across the known ‘verse will offer up exclusive comics to patrons for free. But it’s not just about dropping in and grabbing free loot and bailing. No, friends, this is the day you need to get out and show your appreciation for these stores. Because while the comics are free to you, they are not free to the shopkeepers. They buy those for distribution as a way of thanking us for our business. And what better way to pay it forward is there than to drop a few bucks in their businesses? I’ll leave it to you and your conscience, but know that what you do on FCBD will affect what the shops are able to do in the future. My local comic shop closed, certainly you would not want the same fate for yours, would you? Click here to find a participating comic shop near you!

But all the peer pressure aside, let us take a look at what the day will bring us in the way of comics. But remember, every shop may not have every title.

The Simpsons Star Wars Lightsabers

This past weekend saw the release of a few new movies, including new entries in the Star Wars—which you’ve no doubt been hearing about and seeing constantly for the past week or so, especially if you’re a regular Geeks of Doom visitor—and Alvin and the Chipmunks franchises. The two movies ended up finishing first and second at the domestic box office for the weekend, though it was nowhere near close with The Force Awakens taking in a massive $248 million and breaking lots of records while The Road Chip took in only $14 million.

Not everyone was shocked to see these two movies arriving in theaters this past weekend, however. In a somewhat prophetic episode of The Simpsons way back in 2009 titled “Homer the Whopper,” a movie studio lot is shown with ads for, you guessed it, new Star Wars and Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. Click on over to the other side to check out the image.

The Simpsons 2705-10

The Simpsons
Season 27 Episodes 5: “Treehouse Of Horror XXVI”
Written by Joel H. Cohen
Created by James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Sam Simon
Starring Dan Castellaneta, Nancy Cartwright, Julie Kavner, Yeardley Smith, Harry Shearer, Hank Azaria, Pamela Hayden, Kelsey Grammer
NBC
Air Date: Sunday, October 25th, 2015, 8pm

To crazed TV watchers, October means one thing: Halloween episodes! When I was a kid it was Roseanne. My parents and I gathered every year to watch the Conner family scare that crap out of us. At that point The Simpsons were just the weird yellow cartoon from Tracey Ullman’s show. Then I saw my first Treehouse of Horror episode, was introduced to Kang and Kodos, and the sweet sound of James Earl Jones reading Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven to a scared Homer, I was hooked. Since then, we’ve witnessed over a quarter century’s worth of Treehouse of Horror episodes, each with 3 scary Simpsons segments, including classics like The Shinning, Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace, and Citizen Kang. I never could have imagined that when I watched the first Simpsons Halloween special back in 1990 at the age of 8, I’d be able to watch the 26th edition of that same special with my 11-year old son. As usual, The Simpsons prove cross-generational and timeless.

Some spoilers and check out the “couch gag” clip below.

SDCC 2015: ‘The Simpsons’ Panel And Q & A

The Simpsons Animation Domination

Just to put The Simpsons in perspective; I am 33 years old. The Simpsons began its historic run on FOX in 1989, spun off from the Tracey Ullman Show when I was 7! As in starting second grade! So when my generation speaks of The Simpsons we aren’t just mentioning one of many quality shows on television. We literally grew up with these characters. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie aren’t characters; they’re our neighbors, classmates, and friends. “DOH” and “Cowabunga Dude” are parts of American history and culture. Co-creator Matt Groening and friends greeted fans at San Diego Comic-Con with a panel that discussed the future of the series as it enters it 27th (!) season, and the all-things Simpsons FXX universe.

Watch the panel videos below.

Harry Shearer Characters Mr. Burns and Smithers on The Simpsons

A couple of months ago news broke which shocked the longtime fans of The Simpsons: Harry Shearer, the voice of many of the hit animated show’s characters including Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Principle Skinner, and many others, would not be returning after 26 seasons on the job.

Back then we said it was really hard to believe Shearer was actually leaving and this wasn’t just one of those disputes that would eventually be worked out. And as it turns out, much to the delight of said fans, that’s exactly what was going on as it’s now being reported that Shearer has officially signed on to return with the other voice actors.

Harry Shearer Characters Mr. Burns and Smithers on The Simpsons

One of the most important voice actors on The Simpsons, Harry Shearer, is leaving the show after 26 seasons. Shearer shared the news on the Twitter last night.

Shearer voices an insane amount of characters on the shows, including Ned Flanders, Mr. Burns, Principal Skinner, Smithers, Lenny, Kent Brockman, Reverend Lovejoy, Otto, and many more in the nearly 600 episodes he recorded for through to the end of the current 26th season. Only Hank Azaria and Dan Castellaneta voice more characters than Shearer. You can get a visual of idea of just how important Shearer is to the cast right here.

You can read more and see what Shearer had to say below.

The Simpsons

Any fan of The Simpsons or South Park knows that the top names involved with those shows voice a whole lot of the characters that exist in those animated universes.

But do you know exactly how many characters these actors voice? A pair of new images give you a name and every character they voice on the show, and some might surprise you. With The Simpsons, just a handful of actors voice over 100 characters. On South Park, four actors voice over 80 characters, with Trey Parker and Matt Stone doing 55 themselves.

You can see who voices who below!

Sin City A Dame To Kill For Mickey Rourke as Marv

Welcome to another shiny new edition of The Digital Wire! Despite that exuberant fanfare, I am sad to announce that this week has been mighty slim in the realm of Blu-ray and DVD release news and the titles we have to report on won’t get much interest as they are all part of tired franchises, but one of the purposes of this feature is to give such titles the space they deserve. Besides, you may be interested in one or more of them.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

The Simpsons Groundskeeper Willie On Scottish Independence

On September 18, the people of Scotland will vote whether to secede from the United Kingdom, gain independence (yet again — remember Braveheart?), and become its own country. It’s up in the air right now how the Scots will vote, but celebrities across the UK have been offering up their opinions: Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and former Doctor Who star David Tennant hope there will be a “No” on Scottish independence, while Highlander immortal Sir Sean Connery and action star Gerard Butler are hoping for a “Yes.”

Now, Scotsman Groundskeeper Willie from the long-running animated FOX series The Simpsons has spoken out on his views regarding the upcoming Scottish independence vote. Check out the video here below.
