Hellbreak

I recently had the chance to ask Cullen Bunn and Brian Churilla a few questions about Hellbreak and some of their other projects. I’ve long been a fan of Cullen, but I’m only recently discovering Brian, thanks in no small part to The Sixth Gun mini-series Sons Of The Gun they did together and the Big Trouble In Little China series. Getting the skinny on their newest collaboration was awesome, to say the least.

If you haven’t checked this amazing new comic out, I urge you to do so. The premise is awesome and it looks like it’s going to be a great run! If you missed my review of the first one, you can find it here.

So, without any more delays, here’s what went down with Cullen!

The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “What did you get at NYCC?” Henchman21, and “Con Crud!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 16, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I don’t know about you, but I’m still a little warn out from New York Comic-Con, so it’s a bit of a short list this week, with just a couple of new hardcovers for you. But what we lack in quantity, we make up for in quality with two can’t-miss books and one title that the Empress has been waiting for since the summer. And if you’re looking for the hot new single issues out this week, there’s a new issue of Hawkeye, Invincible, Morning Glories, The Sixth Gun, and Batman/Superman to keep you entertained. Now if you don’t mind, we’re going to go take a nap while you enjoy this week’s GoD List!

It is a big week this time and I’m making up for taking last week off. Hey, I get vacations from time to time, but there are just too many books to talk about. We’ve got a couple of high profile first issues, a sad farewell to a classic series, a new issue for my favorite series currently running, and some other stuff. Sixth Gun #28The Sixth Gun #28
Written by Cullen Bunn
Illustrated by Brian Hurtt
Colors by Bill Crabtree
Letters by Douglas E. Sherwood
Cover by Brian Hurtt
Designed by Keith Wood
Edited by Charlie Chu
Oni Press
Release Date: January 30, 2013
Cover Price: $3.99

I can’t remember when it was the last time I read The Sixth Gun. But, after reading The Sixth Gun #28, I might be picking up another copy sooner rather than later. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this issue.

Writer Cullen Bunn gives us a pretty great little mystery here. Granted, I had almost NO clue as to what’s going on, because this isn’t a title that I read on a regular basis, but I was able to discern the story and what was going on pretty quickly. In this issue there’s an A and a B plot which eventually merge together to make one great big shock ending. The one problem I had with this book was that I really couldn’t tell who the “good” guys and “bad” guys were. I had a good idea, but I wasn’t 100 percent certain.

NBC Orders TV Pilot For Comic Book Series ‘The Sixth Gun’

The Sixth Gun

We reported a while ago that Lost co-showrunner Carlton Cuse was planning to bring the Oni Press comic book series The Sixth Gun to TV, and now we can report that, according to Deadline, NBC has officially ordered a pilot for the series. This is a good next step for the series which follows the adventures of Drake Sinclair and Becky Montcrief as they travel the wild west, trying to keep six supernatural pistols out of the hands of those who would use the guns to end the world.

The next step for the series will be assembling the cast and crew and getting the pilot on film. The Sixth Gun will be another in a growing number of comic properties coming to television. The pilot for the Marvel comics S.H.E.I.L.D. show for ABC is filming now. We’re still waiting to see what the status is on FX’s Powers show (based on the Image comic from Brian Bendis and Mike Oeming) which has gone through a number of issues, but still seems to be very much alive. There’s also the rumored Chew show (based on another Image comic by John Layman and Rob Guillory) set to air on Showtime.

We’re all still a little wiped out from the holiday weekend, but that doesn’t mean comics get to take any time off. Nope, the business keeps rolling on and that means we have to keep up with all these recommendations for all the best comics out this week. Do we get a vacation? Aww, hecks no. Creator Owned Comics That You Should Be Reading

Creator Owned Comics You Should Be Reading

Creator owned books are probably the greatest thing about the comics industry for a variety of reasons. As a punk rock, do-it-yourself kind of guy, I love the lack of corporate involvement in creator owned comics. You see, when you read a book from Marvel or DC Comics, you’re reading a book that has editorial mandates and corporate interest from Disney and Warner Bros., respectively. To emphasize what that means, it restricts creator input in a series that you’re putting your hard-earned money towards. You’re not just reading a comic from Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham, you’re reading a comic by those two, Jim Lee, Dan DiDio, Mike Marts, and many others who should have no business having input on a comic made by incredibly creative people. You’re not reading a comic that’s sole intention is to be good, you’re reading a comic that a company thinks will sell units. The primary goal of these comics is to make money. So, in essence, you’re losing so much with editorial involvement that’s not there when you read a creator owned book. No one tells these people what they can and cannot have within the pages of their creations. And while I adore characters like Batman and many other mainstream heroes, there’s something magical and pure about reading a comic written and drawn by the creators of the property.

So, it’s in honor of Creator Owned Day that we wanted to take the time to have a look at some Creator Owned Comics That You Should Be Reading if you’re not already.
