Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, undoubtedly the best Star Trek movie ever (and one of my favorite movies of all time)! For the occasion, the film will get a limited theatrical release this September, courtesy of Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures.

The digitally remastered Director’s Cut of the film will get a two-day-only theatrical run nationwide — Sunday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 13, at 2pm and 7pm local time each day. A new in-depth interview with star William Shatner (who reprised his iconic role as James T. Kirk in the film) will be played before each showing.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

The best of the Star Trek movie franchise is coming back to Blu-ray and it promises to look and sound better than ever before.

In celebration of Star Trek‘s 50th anniversary, this summer Paramount Home Media will re-release Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in a new Blu-ray Edition that will include both the theatrical version and the slightly longer Director’s Cut available for the first time in high-definition.

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection Blu-ray Releases

Since there isn’t much home video news to report this week, I’ve decided to make this edition of The Digital Wire a special one. In light of the recent deaths of Leonard Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett this week’s Wire will be devoted to a list of the five best films in the Star Trek franchise starring the legendary Original Series cast available to own on Blu-ray.

Each title provides a link to its corresponding Amazon page so you can order a copy of your very own if you choose (you can also get the 6-film Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection, which comes with a bonus disc). Also, although this is a special edition of the Digital Wire, I’ve still provided a list of this week’s major releases on Blu-ray and DVD, complete with their own purchase links. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Yesterday we reported that Benedict Cumberbatch‘s role in Star Trek Into Darkness had been revealed as John Harrison by Paramount Pictures via the release of a new official still, a revelation that revealed next to nothing about his actual character. Thus the fan speculation continued: he’s really playing Khan….or Gary Mitchell….or Spock’s brother Sybok….and so on and and so on….

Early reports from screenings of the 9-minute preview of the film that will begin playing this weekend before select IMAX 3D screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (full list of IMAX theaters here) have claimed that a selection of Michael Giacchino‘s score for Into Darkness quotes from music composed by James Horner for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, particularly the theme for the movie’s titular villain (played in the 1982 movie and the original series episode “Space Seed” by the late Ricardo Montalban). Today comes the news, courtesy of Silas Lesnick at Coming Soon, that the new character being played by Alice Eve has been confirmed, and it is a name fans of the Star Trek franchise will be very familiar with.
