Rumors are always fun. Sometimes they turn into something, sometimes they prove to be nothing at all. Today comes an intriguing little rumor (or rumors) involving the Marvel universe, but it’s not one that’s been created out of nowhere. This one might just have a bit of backing.

According to Roger Wardell, who’s been sharing supposed insider Marvel bits via Twitter—many of which have turned out to be accurate or make plenty of sense—Marvel is in negotiations with Viggo Mortensen for an unspecified role in one of their “Phase 2” movies, which are the group of films that will lead to The Avengers 2. He later stated somewhat cryptically that there is something “Strange” about Thor 2, which is titled Thor: The Dark World, possibly indicating the inclusion of a one Dr. Strange.

Mads Mikkelsen Header

With Thor 2 scheduled to begin filming later this year, the cast and crew are getting ready for another go around in Asgard and on Midgard.

Unfortunately audiences won’t be seeing an exciting villain prospect. Sources have confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen, once thought to be joining Thor 2 as an antagonist, will now not be playing as the villain of the film. Due to his commitment to the new Silence of the Lambs TV series on NBC, Mikkelsen had to pull himself out of the project.

Zachary Levi

Chuck and Tangled star Zachary Levi is heading towards another big name movie, and he continues to be as dashing as ever. Levi is in talks to replace Josh Dallas as Fandral in Thor 2. Dallas is unable to reprise the role of the dashing character, as he has a commitment to the ABC show Once Upon A Time.

Ironically Levi was offered the role before Dallas was, but Chuck was picked up for one final season and he had to stay. According to The Hollywood Reporter, talks are in the early stages, but Levi will most likely accept the role.

New Release Dates For ‘The Lone Ranger’ & ‘Thor 2’ Announced

The Lone Ranger

Two of next year’s most anticipated blockbusters are getting their release dates shifted. Gore Verbinski‘s big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer has moved from May 31st to July 3rd, pitting it against Despicable Me 2 and 20th Century Fox’s 3D re-release of Independence Day. Meanwhile, the Marvel Studios sequel Thor 2 being directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) will now open on November 8th instead of November 15th, giving it a much-needed two-week head start before the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The Thor 2 release date move is a canny one as it will need all the time it can get before Catching Fire is released. While there’s no doubt that the original Thor was a successful film and has seen its following grow substantially in the wake of The Avengers, the first Hunger Games has the greatest appeal to younger moviegoers, particularly since both movies will be competing for those all-important holiday season dollars.

NYCC 2011: Marvel Avengers Panel: Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige

With success of The Avengers well behind us, it’s time to look ahead at what could be appearing in future entries of the Marvel cinematic universe. Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are all scheduled to hit theaters next year and we pretty much know who the villain is going to be in the former, but we don’t know to much about the villain in the latter. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased us on who the villain could be in the sequel about the god from Asgard.

In an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Feige says that we will see an Asgard that was left out of the first film and his description of the holy place isn’t as pristine as once thought.

Mads Mikkelsen Joins ‘Thor 2’; Jon Favreau & Ashley Hamilton In ‘Iron Man 3’

Ashley Hamilton and Mads Mikkelsen

One of the most common complaints about the villains in the Iron Man franchise is that both had suits that were dastardly twisted versions of the Iron Man armor. That complaint may irk its ugly head once more in Iron Man 3, as Ashley Hamilton is now in talks to play Firepower, who Variety confirms to be the villain the film. Not only that, but the trade reports that the movie will borrow elements from the Warren-Ellis six-issue comic book arc.

It’s being reported that Alan Taylor has been chosen to replace Patty Jenkins as director of Thor 2, the follow-up the hit Marvel Comics adaptation that was released this past May.

Jenkins, who wrote and directed the Oscar-winning Monster with Charlize Theron, chose to walk away from the project earlier this month due to some creative differences, though she is expected to take on another superhero title down the road.

Patty Jenkins Leaving ‘Thor 2’

This sucker can’t find any momentum.

Following the departure of potential directors Kenneth Branagh and Brian Kirk, Deadline is reporting that Patty Jenkins is also now leaving Thor 2, leaving the project without a helmer.

Apparently, the Monster director still has the potential to be working on another Marvel project, just “not on a sequel,” at least according to the story. The flick is set to hit on November 15, 2013, (moved from its original July 26, 2013 release date) and while it remains to be seen who will take over the helm, names like Drew Goddard, James McTeigue, Noam Murro, and Breck Eisner we all considered prior to Jenkins.

Thor

Back in September we started hearing names that could step in and replace Thor director Kenneth Branagh on the planned sequel after he had decided that he would not be returning. One of the names that was said to be at the top of the list was Patty Jenkins.

Now comes confirmation by Marvel Studios that Jenkins will indeed be taking on Thor 2, which was originally set for a July 26, 2013 release but has since been moved into the November 15, 2013 spot, interestingly enough.
