Geeks of Doom Invades WonderCon 2011

New ThunderCats At WonderCon 2011Children of the ’80s will want to take note of the new ThunderCats animated series, which Cartoon Network promoted by debuting the show’s trailer at WonderCon 2011.

If you were too young to be smitten with talking kitties, you still may want to check the show out as it’s being produced by folks who’ve worked on Batman: The Brave and the Bold (Michael Jelenic) and The Last Airbender (Ethan Spaulding).

Larry Kenney, who voiced the original Lion-O in the 1980s version, returns to provide the voice of Claudus in the new series.

Cartoon Networks Anime-Style ‘Thundercats’ Gets A First Trailer

The first trailer for the Cartoon Network’s Thundercats has shown up online.

The animated series is a reboot of the classic ’80s kids show with a makeover giving it more of a Japanese anime look. Before this all we had to go on was an image that had been released, making many fans of the original a little skeptical of these new-look Thundercats.

The hopes here is to win over a new fan base for the property, as well as keep all of the old fans who loved the show when they were kids. This seems like it will be a challenge for the old school fan, however, as it’s tough for nostalgia’s sake to warm up to the new look (for me, anyway).

Watch Now: Is This Footage From The ‘Thundercats’ Movie Better Than The New Animated Series?

OK, allow us to catch you up on all things Thundercats.

Way back when (a few years ago), it was reported that a new movie based on the classic animated Thundercats was on the way from Warner Brothers. The movie adaptation never quite found its legs, and has been in production purgatory ever since. Then last June we found out that WB Animation was entering into a collaboration with Japan’s Studio4°C for a new Thundercats animated series that would have anime influences.

Just recently the first images from the animated series showed up online, but today comes a special bit of footage from the lost Thundercats CG movie that was once on the way. It’s pretty cheesy, to be completely honest, and a lot of work would have to be done if they decided to bring the movie back to life, but it is worth seeing for you fans.

You can see the Thundercats movie clip as well as an image from the upcoming animated series below by clicking on over now.

Thundercats

In a press release put out today, Warner Brothers Animation officially announced that they have entered into production on a brand new animated series based on the popular ’80s show, Thundercats, which will air on Cartoon Network.

Warner Animation is collaborating on the project with Japan’s Studio4°C, who have brought us other titles such as Gotham Knights, The Animatrix, and Halo Legends. Instead of the normal cartoon look for Thundercats, this new series will actually infuse traditional Japanese anime animations into the production, giving it an amazing visual styles to go along with the wonderful new stories.

Dig out those sweet plastic swords you had when you were a wee li’l tyke, and sound off with your best “HOOOOO!” as you click over for more and to read the full press release. Don’t B.S. us. We all did it.
