The Old Man and the Gun Movie Review

The Old Man and the Gun
Director: David Lowery
Writer: David Lowery
Cast: Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, Tika Sumpter, Tom Waits and Sissy Spacek
Distributor: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Rated PG-13 | Minutes: 93
Release Date: September 28, 2018

Effective storytelling is something that is hard to come by, but David Lowery‘s The Old Man and the Gun does it so well, making the characters in the film storytellers who tell a mostly true story about wild and romantic tales of charming bank robberies and fascinating jailbreaks. It is not only a love letter to Robert Redford‘s career, it is also a terrific capper for the legendary actor who will be leaving the acting game on a very high note.

The Old Man and the Gun brings out the very best in Redford by letting him be himself: a charismatic, charming, warm, gentleman who loves what he does and does what he loves. Surrounded by a terrific supporting cast that consists of Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck, Tom Waits, Tika Sumpter, and Danny Glover, Lowery’s latest effort is a nostalgic reminder of what makes character-driven stories so captivating and why we go to the movies. ‘The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs’: Official Trailer For Coen Brothers’ Western Anthology Released

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Coen Brothers

A little over a year ago we found out that Academy Award winners Joel Coen and Ethan Coen were making a western anthology for Netflix titled The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. At the time, I misread the project as an anthology series when in fact it was described as a western anthology “project,” not a series. And now we know that it will actually be a six-part western anthology film. Whether those six parts will in total equal the length of one feature film or if each part will be longer than that remains to be seen. Either way, I’m damn excited about it.

Netflix has now released an official trailer for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which is presented in the unique style of the Coen brothers. Each chapter tells a story about the American Old West, with Scruggs (played by Tim Blake Nelson) at the center of it all.

‘The Old Man and The Gun’ Trailer: Robert Redford Is The Gentleman’s Bank Robber

Old Man And The Gun trailer

We are accustomed to seeing very aggressive bank robbers in films. Some so hostile they resort to taking hostages or mowing down people with their heavy artillery. But every once in a while, you get a different kind of bank robber. One that is unconventional. And that is what you will see in The Old Man and the Gun starring Robert Redford.

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for the film, which doesn’t hide the fact that it is partially based on a true story. But the most interesting thing about it is that this film feels unlike any other bank robbery or heist film in terms of its cast, how it was shot, and even the music. Everything about it feels like a callback to the movies of old. Check out the trailer below.

Watch: Early Work Of Chris Farley Voicing ‘Shrek’

Chris Farley

Before ]Mike Myers ever voiced the titular Shrek for four very successful films and a few TV specials, the late Chris Farley was tapped to play the lovable green ogre. In fact, reports say that the comedian had actually recorded up to 95% of the voice work before his passing. With that in mind, one has to wonder what would have the film sounded like had DreamWorks animation just released it.

Now a newly released video is showing how widely different the one Farley voiced would have been had the animated studio just stuck with it as opposed to the one Myers voiced. Check it out below.

Music Review: Tom Waits ‘Bad As Me’

Tom Waits: Bad As MeBad As Me
Deluxe CD | CD | MP3
Tom Waits
Anti-
Release Date: November 2011

In a time of austerity and defunct pop music, Bad As Me came along and cuts through like a bread knife into stale society and bamboozles it into actual listenable audio lunacy.

Tom Waits knew about current society, too – the pre-release trailer videos hinted towards in the rusted out Volks Beetle he resides to promote what to expect and he had to trust that his musical genius was not leaked out – by presenting the vignettes of his tracks for us to enjoy beforehand, especially utilising the preemptive strike listening party…

In his twenty-odd album career, Waits is nowhere near slowing down. His contemporaries may have retired themselves to stagnant acoustics and vegas-showroom residencies, but Waits continues with his sideways view of America, new and busted, reinventing himself yet again in what could be considered another prime-time of his life album. But no, in a reversal of the Madonna reinvention, Tom Waits has traversed all eras in his career to produce this, a homage, a love letter, a modern masterpiece.

Seven Psychopaths Header

There has just been a slew of red band trailers being released this week, and now you can add Seven Psychopaths to that list. As you may have seen from the first trailer, the film centers on a down-and-out screenwriter and his two friends (Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken) who partake in the dog kidnapping business. When one of them accidentally kidnaps the dog belonging to a emotionally unstable gangster (Woody Harrelson), the three are on the run for their lives.

Take a look at the f-bomb filled red band trailer (because that’s the only reason why it is red banded) here below.

Seven Psychopaths

Seven Psychopaths is the follow-up to Martin McDonagh’s Academy Award winning film In Bruges (please watch the film if you haven’t yet). The first trailer for the film has appeared online and it looks nothing short of hilarious. Check it out below.

The premise is pretty simple: three people working in the dog kidnapping business (Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken) unwittingly take a dog that belongs to an emotionally unstable mob boss (Woody Harrelson). From there it is escaping the mob, trying to survive, and figuring out how to make a profit from all of this.

Daniel Radcliffe Interested In Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’

Pinocchio

It’s great to see that Guillermo Del Toro is finally finding his footing after he had to leave The Hobbit and At the Mountains of Madness. It is expected that after del Toro completes his work on Pacific Rim, he will immediately jump in to co-direct his first stop-motion animated film, Pinocchio, with Mark Gustafson (animation director for Fantastic Mr. Fox).

But this won’t be a kid-friendly Pinocchio; no, the film will be based on Gris Grimly’s dark interpretation of the story that takes place in Italy between World War I and World War II. Looking at del Toro’s IMDB profile, this should not come as a big surprise. The film will also be in 3D.

It’s Huluween over at Hulu where you can watch a bunch of spooky movies for FREE, like Candyman, Fright Night, and Troll 2, as well as some TV shows perfect for Halloween time like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, its spinoff Angel, and The Crow: Stairway To Heaven.

Definitely check out the selection of videos, but before you go any further, I thought I’d bring your attention to another selection up for viewing right now: Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Now, about Dracula — I LOVE this movie. Why? Oh let’s see, because Gary Oldman IS Count Dracula and as you might not know, Gary Oldman rules! Released in 1992, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed film also starred Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing and Tom Waits as Renfield. Sounds good, right?
