Felicity Jones in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may be behind us now, but its post-production stories will live on. Months before its release, the first Star Wars spinoff went through numerous reshoots and rewrites, many of which led to speculation that the film had major issues. While it did go on to be a box office hit for a non-Skywalker saga film, many of the creative forces behind it have spoken out about screenwriters like Tony Gilroy helping to save it and which scenes had to be re-shot.

Now original screenwriter Chris Weitz is talking about what changed and what was kept a mystery. Check out what he had to say below, but fair warning to anyone who has not yet seen Rogue One, there will be some spoilers ahead.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

It’s the Summer of 2016, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is undergoing reshoots. Reshoots are just a normal part of the filmmaking process and take place in order to polish some scenes. Additional reshoots may also be done in order to add new scenes. But when it happened for director Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One, there were quite a few concerns. First came the reports that Disney execs were not pleased with the tone of the film. Then Tony Gilroy came in to help fix some of the issues with the script. And the lengthy reshoots were due in part to the actors’ different schedules.

While Rogue One went to become a huge hit both critically and commercially, the drama of the rewrites and reshoots will always be attached to it. And now we are getting some insight about how problematic the script was before Gilroy came in to fix it. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter recently spoke about it in an interview. According to him, “they were in terrible trouble.” More on the story below.

During the course of that time, many were concerned about the timing of these reshoots and script rewrites. Naturally, big budget blockbusters like Rogue One will go through reshoots just to work out any issues the film may have. In the long run, these reshoots helped the film, as it quickly became the third highest grossing film of 2016 in just a matter of a few short weeks.

Now the subject of these reshoots has popped up again, as many are wondering what scenes were reshot and what scenes were rewritten. Of course, now is the perfect time to ask about it considering that the film is practically behind us. Star Wars Rogue One X-Wings

Apparently plenty of you rebelled over the weekend as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the number one film, grossing over $290 million worldwide. Many critics were overjoyed by Lucasfilm’s first Star Wars spinoff praising it for being new by mixing in the old — the new being focusing on the untold story of how the plans to the Death Star were stolen, the old being seeing digitized classic characters from the original trilogy. But the old also included some unused footage – that many of us didn’t even notice at the time – from the original 1977 film Star Wars: A New Hope. Check out the full story below. Minor spoilers follow. There’s your only warning.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Scribe Tony Gilroy To Make $5 Million Off Rewrites

Rogue One A Star Wars Story Empire header

Sometimes one man’s controversy is another man’s $5 million paycheck. At least for Tony Gilroy. As you may recall, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was embroiled in a lengthy controversy when the film entered a summer-long reshoot session that required the aid of Gilroy doing rewrites for the film. Normally, a reshoot for any film, especially one of this size, is not really a cause for concern, but because Disney and Lucasfilm were not pleased with the film’s tone, and that a rumored 40% of the film needed to be reshot in order to address some of its major issues, like tone.

Now that the reshoots are fully behind us and Rogue One is already having its press tour, we can look forward to seeing if these reshoots helped or hurt the first Star Wars spinoff. Regardless of what happens, though, Gilroy is getting a nice paycheck out of all of this. One that amounts to $5 million. More on the story below.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Gives Tony Gilroy More Editing Power With Gareth Edwards’ Input

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story death troopers

These reports on studios ordering reshoots seems to be more of a cautionary tale not because there are issues with the original director’s cut, but the fact that studio interference might cause more problems despite their good intentions to deliver an entertaining product. Those reshoots for Suicide Squad may have proven to be disastrous, we don’t know, we haven’t seen the movie, but based on critics’ reactions those reshoots may have done more harm than good. So when reports of reshoots for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were reported, there wasn’t any immediate concern because we would normally treat reshoots as something that was already planned in advance.

Now there are reports that uncredited writer Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy, Michael Clayton) has been tapped to help the editing process with director Gareth Edwards adding his input. Whether or not his vision will stay intact or they are just saying he is on board because the studio wants to avoid a conflict with the DGA remains to be seen. But Rogue One‘s behind-the-scenes drama doesn’t seem to be over quite yet. More on the story below.
