Monster On The HillMonster On The Hill
Paperback | Kindle Edition
Created by Rob Harrell
Top Shelf Productions
Release Date: July 24, 2013
Cover Price: $19.95

A recurring dream that my mom has involves giants stampeding over a hill toward her and her home in a fit of rage. I have always thought that sounded pretty scary and I am glad that I have never had that dream myself. Top Shelf’s latest graphic novel release, Monster On The Hill, created by Rob Harrell, initially drew me in with its chilling title, with my brain recalling my mother’s tales; however, what the story actually focuses on is something entirely different: friendship and group hugs!

It’s 19th century England and there are monsters on the hills. Every town’s got one and the people wait with both exuberant anticipation and dreadful fear for the day in which their particular monster will come crashing into their buildings, wreaking havoc and terrorizing the locals. The thrill of the menaces looming over towns and villages causes citizens to eagerly await the next momentous encounter and vendors to sell merchandise with their particular monster’s likeness.

Upside Down: A Vampire TaleUpside Down: A Vampire Tale
Creator, Writer, and Artist: Jess Smart Smiley
Top Shelf Productions
Release Date: October 15, 2012
Cover Price: $9.95

A personal admission here: I love vampire comics. Always have, always will. So I never turn down the chance to read a new one. Now, having said that, I was not aware that Upside Down: A Vampire Tale was a comic geared mainly towards the younger crowd. Surprise!

Presented in three colors, this graphic novel is lighthearted and entertaining at the most basic level. Centering around a young vampire named Harold, this tale has everything from witches to vampire frogs and most things in between. This entire misadventure starts off with a visit to the dentist but unfortunately things go a little “batty” very quickly. Of course, if Harold didn’t eat so much candy then maybe that visit wouldn’t have had to take place at all. The tale itself is actually a group of small stories. Each one building upon the last until the reader is able to see how Harold comes full circle and like any good fable, this one is easy to understand when completed.

RIP Victims of The Aurora, CO Shootings

Each and every week “Heel Heat!” MK2Fac3 and “Babyface Pop!” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 25, 2012. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I’ve intentionally taken about a week off from writing for the site, with good reason. The shooting in Aurora, CO, has affected me in a way that I have a very hard time expressing. The simple fact is that a completely insane and terrible person decided that he would murder a bunch of people for no reason. In my opinion, this person doesn’t have a name. He shouldn’t be given a chance to be known by anyone and his name shouldn’t be present on the lips of anyone. The majority of us who write for this site and plenty of those of us who read this site were present at midnight screenings across the country. This could have happened to any one of us, but it didn’t. It happened to a group of people who are very similar to us, and they should be remembered. They should be honored, and I’ve been trying to get an idea to honor these people, but nothing I could think of would be enough. So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to list their names so that we don’t forget. They’re the people who we should remember, and they’re the people we should be talking about, so to Jessica Ghawi, Matt McQuinn, Micayla Medek, John Larimer, Alex Sullivan, Alex Teves, Jonathan Blunk, Jesse Childress, AJ Boik, Rebecca Ann Wingo, Gordon W. Cowden, and Veronica Moser-Sullivan, we know who you are, we care about who you are, and we won’t forget you.

Now back to your regularly scheduled The GoD List….

Top Shelf Sale

Top Shelf and Comixology have teamed up to provide special deal to honor San Diego Comic-Con while also giving a nice gift to those of us who couldn’t make it to San Diego this weekend with new releases and a half off sale.

Now, I’m not going to sit here and give you a bunch of examples of things you should read and things you shouldn’t, because honestly Top Shelf books range in audience style. There are comics for adults that aren’t good for kids and there are books for little kids that aren’t going to be enjoyed by a lot of adults. And while not all of these comics are for everyone, there is something here for anyone.
