David Fincher Collaborating With Trent Reznor On ‘Fight Club’ Rock Opera

The first rule of Fight Club is…you do not talk about Fight Club.
The second rule of Fight Club is…you do not talk about Fight Club.
But singing about Fight Club? That’s cool.
Believe it or not, True Believers, David Fincher‘s hypnotically brutal and satirical cult classic of Gen X masculinity gone horribly – and hilariously – wrong is looking to become the latest cinematic masterpiece to invade the Great White Way.
Fincher and Nine Inch Nails front-man (and one half of the composing team on his last three films – The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl) Trent Reznor are working on a Broadway rock opera adaptation of the filmmaker’s excoriated, and later celebrated, 1999 release Fight Club.

 |
Downloaded
Director: Alex Winter
Cast: Shawn Fanning, Sean Parker, Don Lenner, Hilary Rosen, Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan, Lars Ulrich, Trent Reznor
VH1 Rock Docs
Not Rated | 106 Minutes
Release Date: March 10th, 2013 (SXSW)
Directed by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Freaked), Downloaded chronicles the evolution of digital media, focusing primarily on the rise and fall of the pioneering peer-to-peer file sharing Internet service Napster.
Featuring exclusive interviews with Napster co-founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, software developers, musicians, and the music industry elite, Downloaded explores the controversial file sharing software and follows Napster’s rise in 1998, through the gauntlet of copyright infringement lawsuits, to its acquisition by Rhapsody in 2011.
Some of those interviewed for Winter’s documentary include Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, former Sony Music Chairman Don Lenner, former CEO of the RIAA Hilary Rosen, Beastie Boys’ Mike D, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis.
Although there were already networks that facilitated the distribution of files across the Internet, such as IRC, Hotline, and USENET, Napster specialized in MP3 files, a user-friendly interface, and lightning-fast search speeds. At its peak, Napster had about 80 million registered users and revolutionized the music industry for better or for worse.

Watch Now: ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ Opening Credits Sequence

The jury was out for a whole as to whether David Fincher‘s Americanized take on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (read my review here) would be successful enough to warrant sequels on the second and third books in Stieg Larsson‘s Millennium trilogy; in its third week of release the movie had yet to make back its reported $90 million budget, and then there’s the small matter of the cost of its expansive marketing campaign. But Sony did greenlight the sequels this week, though no word yet if the director or the stores will return.

Crusading journalist and magazine publisher Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) has just taken a major hit to his finances and reputation in a libel suit brought against him by billionaire businessman Hans-Erik Wennerström (Ulf Friberg). As he’s trying to figure out his next move while keeping his personal life afloat, Mikael is summoned by retired industrialist Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to his palatial estate on an island in the Swedish countryside. The older gentleman offers the disgraced Blomkvist a golden opportunity that will replenish his bank account and restore his reputation as an honest reporter if he will use his investigative skills to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Vanger’s great-niece Harriet, whom he believes was murdered four decades ago. Blomkvist is reluctant to take on such a task, but when Vanger also offers to give him the crucial evidence he needs to bring Wennerström to justice, the embattled writer accepts the job.
