It may have had a short lifespan, but it looks like the Dark Universe could potentially be rising from the grave. Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, says he is interested in bringing the Dark Universe back to life. More on the story here below.

Guillermo del Toro Talks Regret Over Declining Chance To Run Universal’s Monster Universe

Frankenstein Image

Things have not gone well early on for Universal’s much-hyped shared world featuring their classic monsters, called the Dark Universe. Their first movie, The Mummy, was released earlier this year. Instead of focusing on what made Universal’s monster movies so great, the horror and tone, they instead opted for an action-heavy, CGI-tainted style. The movie quickly became a financial and critical failure. To make matters worse, the talent Universal had hired to manage this ambitious endeavor began departing, and the future of the Dark Universe was already a big question mark.

But it’s still early. Universal still has time to right the ship if they so choose. And one name fans of the original monster movies believe would be perfect to help steer things away from guaranteed death is none other than Guillermo del Toro (The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak). As it turns out, however, Universal already offered del Toro the chance to work on their monster universe, and he turned it down. Find a quote from del Toro and a video below.

Al Pacino in Scarface (1983)

It’s being reported that Universal has brought in Terence Winter to work on the screenplay for Scarface. The movie is a long in-development new take on the immigrant rags to riches premise of both the 1932 and 1983 movies of the same name.

Winter is best known as a writer and executive producer on The Sopranos, and writer, executive producer, and creator of Boardwalk Empire, both with HBO. He was also nominated for an Academy Award writing the script for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, and was a creator, writer, and executive producer on HBO’s short-lived Vinyl, among other things.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for the hilarious comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, starring Andy Samberg as a singer-rapper named Conner4Real. Directed by Samberg’s fellow Lonely Island teammates, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, the film will take audiences behind the scenes of what it is like to live the life of famous rapper Conner4Real, and watch him become humble after his latest album becomes the victim of a flop.

Since this is a red-band trailer, I caution you to hold off on watching it if you are in an office because there is some NSFW material that can be seen and heard in it. But if the coast is clear, then put on those earbuds and check out the trailer below.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Han Solo and Chewie

Over the weekend Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke a couple of records, and you might have already heard, including Jurassic World‘s all-time biggest domestic opening weekend record.

Because Disney-owned Marvel was cool enough to congratulate Universal Pictures on breaking the record earlier this year, topping previous record-holder Marvel’s The Avengers, it seemed only fair that Universal return the favor. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. Just as Marvel tweeted out a congratulatory image of Chris Pratt riding a Tyrannosaurus rex holding Thor’s hammer Mjolnir in front of the Avengers team, Frank Marshall has tweeted out an image of the T-rex presenting droid BB-8 with a medal.

You can check out the congratulations image below.

Tom Cruise In Talks For ‘Mummy’ Reboot; Will Begin Monsters Shared Universe

The Mummy 1932

There’s no doubt whatsoever that many eyes rolled at the news that Universal was going to attempt to turn their classic monsters into a shared universe similar to what Marvel has been doing, beginning with a reboot of The Mummy. But when a name like Tom Cruise comes into the picture, eyebrows will no doubt raise above those previously rolled eyeballs…making for some truly silly faces others will giggle at.

It’s being reported that Cruise has entered into talks for a role in the new Mummy flick, which makes things much more interesting. Who would Cruise play? That’s unclear at the moment…but given that this is a shared universe, you can expect that it would be a multi-picture deal that would see him showing up in other movies that will follow The Mummy centering on Wolf Man, Dracula, and more.
