The Shining (1980)

It seems that Stephen King has been hard at work on a sequel to his epic 1977 tome of supernatural terror The Shining (which was made into a classic horror film in 1980 by Stanley Kubrick starring Jack Nicholson in one of his most iconic performances) called Doctor Sleep. Last Friday King appeared at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, to accept the Mason Award at the school’s Fall for the Book event and during his appearance he entertained his audience by reading a chapter from the forthcoming novel. You can watch a video of the reading here below.

The Ultimate Geek Movies Of All TimeThis week, the podcast Social Blend, which I co-host with Jay Fowler aka SilentJay74, was invaded by the Geeks of Doom! Empress Eve and Tched were considerate enough to join us in a discussion focusing on what we believe to be The Ultimate Geek Movies of All Time.

Quite frequently, you will find some blogs try to come up with some attempt at a “Top 10” list of best movies within any given subject area, but for this special edition of Social Blend, we decided to simply discuss, debate, and squabble about (and in some cases, ridicule) the movies we collectively believe should be on every geek’s DVD shelf.

Aside from the obvious selections from the dominions of Star Wars and Star Trek, we had a look at all kinds of movies from a wide range of genres and categories — from movies based on comics, to science fiction, to music-based films, to horror and beyond.

Zombies And Vampires Rejoice: ‘Blood’ Energy Drinks Now Available
space

Harcos Laboratories, the makers of Mana Potion Energy Shots [which coincidentally look very similar to the ones found in MMORPG World of Warcraft], has released their latest creation: Blood.

Yes, of course they didn’t invent “blood,” but they did do a stellar job in manufacturing an energy drink that looks like you raided a ‘donate blood-mobile’.

Each “Blood Potion” is packaged in a 3.4 oz pouch similar to an I.V. bag found inside any hospital. A single bag contains 80 mg of caffeine as well as other supplements intended to give you a boost when stricken with the bloodlust. It’s best served warm (no, I’m not kidding) like real human blood, which can be achieved by placing it into the microwave for about 14 seconds, according to the manufacturer’s web site LivingWithBloodlust.com.

Jane SlayreJane Slayre
Trade Paperback
By Sherri Browning Erwin
Original Story by Charlotte Bronte
Gallery Books
Release Date: April 13, 2010

Jane Slayre takes the approach of books like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and takes a classic piece of literature and adds a supernatural twist to it. The original story Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte follows the interesting life of Jane Eyre as she grows up and falls in love. Sherri Browning Erwin puts a twist on this story by asking what if Jane had to do this while protecting the world from vampires, voodoo priests, zombies, and werewolves? Well, I say yes please!

The orphan Jane Slayre starts off her life by being raised by her Aunt Reed and living with her three cousins, John, Georgina, and Eliza, all of whom had been turned into vampires. Jane was terrorized by John, which lead to her being able to leave the house to be sent away to school. At this school called Lowood, Jane realizes that the world is filled with these supernatural beings and that her family isn’t the only afflicted ones. As with the classic tale, t first she spends time at the school as a student and then later as a teacher, but eventually she realizes it’s time for her to move on, so she takes a position as Governess at a place called Thornfield. Through her experiences, she founds out what love is and that she feels it for one man. She also discovers that she actually does have a real family that isn’t evil and might even have the same Slayre instincts that she does.

Vamped Out

Popular actor/comedian Kevin Pollak has a new web-exclusive comedy series called Vamped Out, and it has debuted on the website Babelgum today.

The series is about a documentary filmmaker who follows around a real, live vampire who’s trying to make it as an actor. Unfortunately, he can’t even land the roles of characters who are themselves vampires.

Joining him is Jason Antoon (Contact, Minority Report) as the vampire subject, Samm Levine (Freaks & Geeks, Inglorious Basterds) and Seana Kofoed (Broadway’s Proof, Men in Trees).

Tru Blood

The first and second seasons of HBO’s hit vampire show True Blood came and went relatively quickly (or so it felt), but it’s been a bit of a wait for the debut of the third season.

With the show set to return on June 13, 2010, the network has begun releasing many little tease promos to start getting fans ready for another wild adventure in their world of werewolves, shapeshifters, mythological beings, and of course, all of those vampires who prefer slaughter over sparkle.

So far, three posters have been released along with some small preview videos, one of which you can see below and the rest can be seen at the HBO True Blood homepage. A new poster will be released every week leading up to the season 3 premier, which will equal 12 posters in total.

Click over to see the short video (which I think might actually be a couple of months old, but new to me!) and three True Blood Season 3 teaser posters.

Bite Me by Christopher MooreBite Me: A Love Story
By Christopher Moore
Hardcover
William Morrow
Release date: March 23, 2010

Bite Me by Christopher Moore, the sequel to You Suck and Bloodsucking Fiends, is a romantic comedy in a world where vampires exist. Trust me, I know, another vampire book in the barrage of vampire saturation in all of modern media. Just stick with me for a few minutes and then you can make your judgment.

Being that I have not read the other books in this series I came in with no prior knowledge of any of the characters or their history. The first problem you would normally run into would be confusion from jumping into the middle of a storym but Moore really does a great job of catching everyone up in the first chapter. I was in no way confused and was able to pick right up and delve into the story.

Basically the first two books lead us to a point where Elijah, the old Vampire that turned the character Jody to a vampire in the first book, has left the city. Jody and Tommy, who Jody turned in to a vampire, are encased in bronze by their minion Abby and her boyfriend Stephen Foo. We also get to read about the two cops, Cavuto and Rivera, who basically got payed off to look the other way as the vampires leave town, but soon find out it wasn’t all of them that left and that Elijah left a surprise name Chet, who is a shaved cat that Elijah changed into an evil-minded vampire, behind. Abby and Foo have a lot of trouble headed their way.
