Video: The Truth Behind The Van Halen Brown M&Ms Ban

1984

I’ve been a Van Halen fan pretty much my whole life, and one of the biggest secrets surrounding the band is the mystery of why brown-colored M&Ms were banned from their dressing rooms.

Touring artists usually have contracts with the venue where they’re performing with what’s known as a Rider – a set of requests that the venue must fulfill. The rider usually contains a list of specific drinks, food, backstage set-ups, and dressing room arrangements, and when these riders become public, there’s always items on there that just scream “Diva!” Van Halen was one of the first bands to have these rider contracts, and when their’s was made public, it was discovered that there was a demand for a bowl of M&M’s to placed in their dressing room. Not so outlandish, right? Except that they specifically stated that there should be NO brown M&M’s in the bowl.

$5 MP3 Album Deal: Van Halen ‘1984’, Best Of Yes, KISS, Blondie
space
Empress Eve   |  @   |
space

van halen 1984Amazon currently has some great albums on sale in MP3 format for only $5 each through the end of July. Here’s some of my suggestions from the 100 albums available in this sale.

Van Halen: 1984
The album, released in the year 1984, was the band’s final effort with charismatic frontman, singer David Lee Roth, and also spawned chart-topping hits “Jump,” “Panama,” and “Hot For Teacher.”

KISS: You Wanted The Best, You Got The Best!!
Best of album of KISS tunes from the original “make-up” line-up. Twelve songs, all good — “Rock And Roll All Nite,” “Shout It Out Loud,” “Beth,” “I Stole Your Love” — I could go on and just name all 12 songs basically. Also includes live version of “Take Me,” as well as a 17-minute audio interview with the band conducted by Jay Leno.

Yes: Highlights – The Very Best Of Yes
A collection of awesome songs by prog rock band Yes, including the insanely big hit “Owner Of A Lonely Heart,” which I always felt did not represent the sound and immense talent of this band. Instead, take a listen to “Starship Trooper,” “Roundabout,” “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Wonderous Stories,” and “Long Distance Runaround” from this Best Of album. All masterpieces, I promise.

Blondie: Best Of Blondie
When I was around 8 years old, I taped a penny to one of those BMG order forms and picked Best Of Blondie as one of my four albums to get for only one cent. Til this day, this is one of my favorite best-of albums to listen to. This collection contains 12 songs from the band Blondie, fronted by Debbie Harry, and chances are, you know most of these tunes: “Call Me,” “Rapture,” “Heart Of Glass,” “Dreaming,” “The Tide Is High,” “One Way Or Another,” and a bunch more.

Sammy Hagar - Jimmy Kimmel Live

Rocker Sammy Hagar made an appearance last night on the late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote this new autobiography Red.

Hagar hasn’t been on mainstream radar since his days as Van Halen’s frontman, but thanks to a little story he wrote in Red about an alien encounter he had decades ago, the musician has blipped back onto screens across the nation.

During Hagar’s interview with host Jimmy Kimmel, the segment cut away to Hagar doing a reenactment of his alien encounter, complete with voiceover narration from the passage of the book.

Watch the video of the reenactment here below.

Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock by Sammy HagarRed: My Uncensored Life in Rock
By Sammy Hagar
Hardcover | Kindle
HarperCollins
Release date: March 15, 2011

Sammy Hagar was once the frontman of one of the biggest and greatest bands in history, the mighty Van Halen. But while Hagar sang about standing on “Top Of The World,” as he surely was at times, making millions of dollars, living a life of luxury with fast cars and plenty of women, the musician didn’t always have it easy. Matter of fact, Hagar spent years learning that money, fame, and hit records couldn’t solve every problem, like his wife’s mental state or his bandmate’s addictions and jealousies.

In his autobiography, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, we learn that Hagar began life modestly in Fontana, CA. The youngest of four children, he was raised in a low-income household with an alcoholic father who abused his mother. He later went on have his own family with little means of supporting them, but Hagar makes it clear that he was always a hard worker. It always seemed that the entertainer got his big break in music when he was asked by the Van Halen brothers, guitarist Eddie and drummer Alex, to replace their departing singer David Lee Roth just as the band had come off a winning strike with their best-selling album up until that time, 1984. But while Van Halen was one of the biggest rock bands at the time, thanks to hits like “Jump” and “Panana,” Hagar was already a successful solo artist who had actually made enough money and did enough tours on his own to retire from music altogether. And retire to a life of solitude with his wife and kids was his plan until Eddie Van Halen persuaded him to join the band, and while Hagar was reluctant to accept, his chemistry musically with Van Halen proved too strong a force to deny — the singer/guitarist was ready for the “Best Of Both Worlds.”

Video: Sammy Hagar Talks About His ‘Red’ Autobiography

Sammy Hagar - Red

Rock legend Sammy Hagar just released his autobiography, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, and trust me, it’s seriously uncensored.

Hagar is best known for his role as frontman of Van Halen (replacing David Lee Roth in the mid-1980s) and as you can imagine, he’s got some great stories to tell.

Check out the video here below of Hagar talking a bit about his new book, along with his co-author Joel Selvin.

You may have seen the buzz on Hagar’s comments to MTV about being abducted by aliens. I have to say, that’s brilliant marketing right there, because all of a sudden the name “Sammy Hagar” is all over the net. Personally, I’d rather read about his musical endeavors and what it was like to be part of one of the biggest bands in the world.

Is ‘Master Of Puppets’ By Metallica The ‘Top Metal Song Of All Time’?

Master of PuppetsThe official website for Gibson guitars has released what they perceive to be the top 50 metal songs of all time. Gibson.com’s writers and editors worked on compiling the list over several weeks, releasing 10 entries at a time, and recently released the top 10, which declared the number one metal song to be “Master of Puppets” by Metallica.

In some ways, the number one spot for Metallica is fitting, considering 2011 is the 25th anniversary of the release of their Master of Puppets album. Having said that though, metalheads are notorious for having fierce and strong opinions about what they consider to be their “top songs,” on top of their fierce and strong opinions about what bands are or are not even metal.
