DC Comics made another set announcements on Thursday regarding what they are calling their “edge” titles. Now, I’m not exactly sure why they chose the name to describe these titles, but we’re just going to roll with that, for now. In this set of titles we see a rebirth to a few Wildstorm characters, as well as the return of a few fan favorites. Today’s titles showcased murderers, war, and a hopeful teenager. Yeah, it’s been a weird day to accompany a weird week. But, in continuing my ongoing series of coverage of the DC Relaunch, I will be listing each one of the nine books announced alongside my running commentary. So, let’s get to it!

It was a day of big news for DC Comics today, and part of the news is the announcement that DC is shutting down their WildStorm imprint as well as shutting down their webcomic division, Zuda Comics.

On a statement on DC’s blog The Source, co-publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee spoke of the changes occurring within the company and their efforts to focus on what makes most sense to them as a publisher.

What does the end of these two imprints mean? Not much, really. It is bad news for the Zuda creators who are now out of work, as well as a number of WildStorm employees who may lose their job, and we hope they all land on their feet. However, any popular books at WildStorm are sure to be carried over and will see publication under DC’s main line.

DC Comics Releases iPad/iPhone App

In a surprise twist, DC Comics has shocked the world and joined the digital revolution by releasing their very own iPhone and iPad apps this week!

This application is based off of and made in conjunction with the popular Comixology comic reader that provides the basis for the Marvel Comics and Boom! Studios apps as well, so it seems like Comixology is going to be the source for this medium in the future.

I have yet to see any official press release from DC Comics, but after browsing through the application, I have noticed a few key things. First, a free preview is available for Superman #700, which hits stores today, but there are no other same day releases that I can find. Not only does this application have access to the wide-spanning DC Universe, it also celebrates the strong libraries of DC’s imprint publishers Wildstorm and Vertigo. The application has paid issues from All Star Superman, Planetary, and Fables, but it also has free comics like Batman: Black and White, Fringe, and Mirror’s Edge.

Release date: April 21, 2010

I never read an issue of the original DV8 series, released in the mid 90’s, but I’ll read anything by Brian Wood, so I gave this one a try. The original series rode the wave of Gen 13’s popularity, and featured a bunch of morally bankrupt teens, and that’s about all I know about the original series. This new series keeps the original cast, but throws them in a completely new situation.

DV8: Gods and Monsters #1 opens as Gem Antonelli, aka Copycat, crashes onto a planet of Stone Age (or maybe Dark Age, it’s not really clear) era humans. She is the last of her team to arrive on the planet, the rest having already split up and disappeared. Only her teammate Frostbite remains to explain to Gem what has happened in the last few days. From there we see what the rest of the team has been up to, and it doesn’t look like it will be very good for those living on this planet.
