Aquaman

Aquaman
Director: James Wan
Writers: David Leslie, Johnson-McGoldrick, Will Beall
Cast: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Kidman
Studio: Warner Bros.
Rated PG-13 | 143 Minutes
Release Date: December 21, 2018

Aquaman may be one of the most iconic superheroes in the DC lineup, but the character himself has a reputation for being one of the silliest superheroes. Furthermore, his introduction in Zach Snyder’s Justice League did not do him any favors. That being said, Jason Momoa‘s portrayal was a radical change for the one-dimensional pasty white hero. Instead, we got something that truly represented the character’s struggle of living in two worlds while acknowledging his overall cheesiness.

This helped lay the foundation for his own standalone film. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman sees the return of Momoa playing the aquatic eponymous hero in a globe-trotting superhero epic. By embracing many of the title character’s foibles and cheesiness, the film turns out to be one of the best DCEU entries to date. And while that is an easy bar to cross over, its world-building and willingness to have fun expands the cinematic universe and opens the door for the DCEU to explore bold and new possibilities. Check out my review of Aquaman here below.

Aquaman

This isn’t as shocking as getting doused with a cold bucket of water, but Aquaman is getting a sequel. The film is already on track to earn $65 million in its opening weekend. Additionally, positive early reviews have shown that this is the movie to watch this holiday. So it comes as no surprise that a sequel is “in development.” More on the report below.

Aquaman

A Julie Andrews cameo in Mary Poppins Returns would make a lot of sense since the singer and actress was the star of the original film. However, Andrews confirmed that she would not appear in the follow-up starring Emily Blunt as to not take away her spotlight. So Andrews has settled for a different kind of role. A very unlikely one. According to a new report, Andrews will be lending her voice talents to James Wan‘s Aquaman. More on the report below.

Aquaman

Sure, Aquaman may have had a terrible introduction in Justice League, but the character’s standalone film promises to be the kind of epic that befits a king. And a king would not be king if he didn’t give to the people, if you are an Amazon Prime member that is. So Amazon Prime members will get to see Aquaman five days before its theatrical release. Additionally, there is a brand new trailer that will prove this will be something worth watching. More on the early release plus the trailer here below.

Dark Universe title card

This weekend, Universal will launch the start of their brand new Dark Universe monsters franchise with a reboot of The Mummy. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the film will bring together some of our favorite classic monsters in an all new shared universe involving Universal Monsters. It will be followed up by the Bill Condon-directed Bride of Frankenstein, starring Javier Bardem; Creature of the Black Lagoon from screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Will Beall; The Invisible Man, starring Johnny Depp; and Van Helsing, from Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts, Arrival writer Eric Heisserer, and Dan Mazeau.

But that is just the beginning. Because Kurtzman says there are more Dark Universe films on the way. In a new interview, the man responsible for building this new Universal Monsters shared universe says Dracula, Frankenstein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Phantom of the Opera are being developed. More on the story below.

Aquaman

Suicide Squad is out and kicking butt at the box office despite withering reviews. Wonder Woman is in post-production and expected to be one of the big blockbusters of next summer. Justice League is still filming and hopes to pack theaters and reap riches the following November. Next on deck is Aquaman, which has yet to begin filming under the direction of James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7) but is locking up a fine cast headed by star Jason Momoa (who makes his screen debut as DC Comics’ Atlantean warrior king in Justice League).

Now it has been revealed which villain Aquaman will oppose in his first big screen solo adventure: Black Manta, one of Arthur Curry’s greatest foes. More below.

Warner Bros. Looking At Dueling Aquaman Scripts

Aquaman Movie Image Header

Hot off the heels of announcing that Warner Bros. would be releasing up to nine DC Comic films between 2016 and 2020, comes word that there will be an Aquaman film. But that isn’t even the craziest thing – unless you’ve heard Zack Snyder recently defend the honor of the King of Atlantis, who will appear in his Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film for DC.

Reports are coming in that WB has commissioned two scripts for an Aquaman film, but they won’t be for two different films. The studio is aggressively working on getting Aquaman on the big screen for a solo film, so they have hired Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and Kurt Johnstad (300: Rise of an Empire) to write two separate scripts, with the hope that one of them will be primed and ready for filming.

Ben Affleck On Warner Bros.’ Shortlist To Direct ‘Justice League’

Ben Affleck

The world of silver screen superheroics is not unknown territory for actor/director Ben Affleck. During the early years of his post-Good Will Hunting career the Academy Award-winner was rumored to be in the running to play both Batman and Superman. Then in 2003 he finally got his chance to play a comic book hero on film when he top-lined Mark Steven Johnson’s bloated Daredevil adaptation. Although that movie was a very nice moneymaker for financier 20th Century Fox the withering reviews and lack of desire from fans for a sequel kept any further Daredevil features on ice to this day. During that time Affleck has gone from being one of Hollywood’s rising star to a tabloid and internet punching bag due to some ill-advised career and relationship decisions to once again being the toast of Tinseltown with his well-received move into working behind the camera with his well-received dramas Gone Baby Gone and The Town.

It was the latter film that officially launched Affleck on his second career as a prestigious filmmaker; his third film as a director, Argo (which he also stars in), opens next month and is garnering some impressive buzz thus far. On the strength of his previous films and the soon-to-be-released Argo Warner Bros. signed Affleck to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s epic apocalyptic horror-fantasy The Stand last October. Now it seems Warners is grooming the more talented half of the entity once known as Bennifer for another huge project the studio has been looking to get off the ground for several years.
