Things go awry when said teen (Marty) gets sent back in time instead and lands in all sorts of hot water. His mom has a crush on him, he has to train his dad to stand up for himself, and the town bully (boss in the future) is on his case. He also accidentally almost erases himself from existence. With the help of the “Doc” from the past, Marty must right the wrongs and get Back to the Future! But what happens when you put the most famous writer of all time’s stamp on it?

Much Ado About Mean Girls book review

William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Mean Girls
Pop Shakespeare Series (Book 1)
Paperback | Kindle Edition | Audiobook
Written by Ian Doescher
Illustrations by Kent Barton
Inspired by the work of Tina Fey and William Shakespeare
Publisher: Quirk Books
Release Date: April 23, 2019

The William Shakespeare’s Star Wars series of books has been a big hit for Quirk Books, where writer Ian Doescher adapted the highly popular installments of the Star Wars saga into the style of a Shakespearean play. If only high school English requirements could be this fun!

Therefore, it’s not surprising that the publisher is now branching out with a new Pop Shakespeare series that will tackle other popular films in the same manner. And what better way to launch this spin-off series than with a story that takes place in high school?

For William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Mean Girls, the author playfully gives Tina Fey’s 2004 big-screen teen comedy Mean Girls the Shakespearean treatment, where, sadly, “fetch” still hasn’t caught on. But when it comes to Doescher’s ability to cleverly and faithfully convert our favorite movies into Shakespearean masterpieces, the limit doth not exist.

Shakespeare's Star Wars graphic

This past weekend saw the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the standalone story about the group of rebels who stole the plans to the Death Star, which directly leads to the events of the original film, 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope.

For this occasion, Ian Doescher, author of Quirk Books’ line of Shakespearianized Star Wars novels, has written a Shakespearean sonnet titled “Rogue In Vogue” inspired by the new film.

License to Quill by Jacopo della Quercia banner

License to Quill
Paperback | Kindle Edition
by Jacopo della Quercia
St. Martin’s Griffin | Macmillan
Release date: December 15th, 2015

History says that Christopher Marlowe, a playwright who influenced William Shakespeare, was stabbed to death while embroiled in legal trouble, over words that may or may not have been his. But what if that was an act? What if this was the 16th Century version of the witness protection program? William Shakespeare takes over for that influential bard, and finds himself mixed up in The Gunpowder Plot (a group tried to assassinate King James, the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland). Guy Fawkes commissions him to write a play about “the abuse of power” set in Scotland, to rile things up a bit.

License to Quill by Jacopo della Quercia takes you through an exciting historical mystery – one in which you expect Shakespeare to utter, “Shaken… not stirred.”

Michael Fassbender in Macbeth

William Shakespeare is, perhaps, the king of written tragedies. Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s darkest and saddest tales, is also arguably one of the greatest tragedies ever told. And the new film version of Shakespeare’s work starring Michael Fassbender in the titular role, looks to be the darkest adaptation ever performed judging by this newly released teaser trailer.

You can read the description and check out the grim trailer below.

This month, just in time for The Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, comes another Shakespearean parody of the Jedi variety. William Shakespeare’s The Phantom of Menace: Star Wars Part The First by Ian Doescher (with some help from George Lucas and William Shakespeare) merges Part I of the Star Wars saga with the language of Shakespeare.

Obi-Wan: I have a bad feeling about this, Master.
Qui-Gon: Yet sense I nothing. Wherefore art thou tense?
Obi-Wan: ‘Tis not about the mission – something else.
Elusive ’tis, aye, difficult to name.

Macbeth

A Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet, Cinderella) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street, Casino) collaboration has been in the works for some time. If the collaboration were to happen, Scorsese would be bringing Branagh’s stage adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s MacBeth to the big screen. But given both filmmakers’ busy schedules, the film would not likely go into production for some time, at least not any time soon.

Now a new interview reveals that there is “some” progress being made, and the two are nearly closing the deal to get the film made. Hit the jump for more.
