In honor of the 35th anniversary of the theatrical release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Paramount Pictures and Fathom Events are bringing the Director’s Cut version of the film to theaters for two days only this month (9/10 & 9/13). I got the chance to see the film at my local theater at the Sunday afternoon screening, and even though I’ve seen this movie — which is one of my favorites of all time — countless times, getting to see it on the big screen again was elating.

The screenings all include a new interview with the film’s star William Shatner, who played the iconic role of James T. Kirk. In the interview, which begins about 15 minutes prior to the screening times (2pm and 7pm local time), the actor talked about making the sequel and how it reinvigorated the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, undoubtedly the best Star Trek movie ever (and one of my favorite movies of all time)! For the occasion, the film will get a limited theatrical release this September, courtesy of Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures.

The digitally remastered Director’s Cut of the film will get a two-day-only theatrical run nationwide — Sunday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 13, at 2pm and 7pm local time each day. Star Trek: The Animated Series Blu-ray Edition box set

Star Trek: The Animated Series
The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek
Blu-ray Edition

Directed by Hal Sutherland, Bill Reed
Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Majel Barrett
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release Date: November 15, 2016

When the original Star Trek was cancelled in 1969 after three seasons, it left a void with fans who wanted NBC to renew the television series about the starship Enterprise and its crew’s five-year mission to explore new worlds and new civilizations. Audiences grew to love William Shatner‘s Captain Kirk and his first officer, the half-human half-Vulcan Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, but the ratings just weren’t high enough after the show was moved for the third season to a Friday night “death” slot. While Star Trek got to live on in syndication, it wasn’t until 1973 that new life was breathed into it with Star Trek: The Animated Series, produced by Filmation, the company behind Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.

Publisher: National Geographic Books

Star Trek is one of the most beloved entertainment franchises in the world, with its reach stretching 50 years of not only massive fandom, but influence on everyday life and our aspirations for the future. Even space agencies such as NASA cite the science fiction series as an inspiration. Now, National Geographic Books has created Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Universe, an informative tome that seeks to show the correlations between true science and that which is presented throughout the fictional universe.

William Shatner, who made a name for himself as the original Captain James T. Kirk on the 1960s television series, provides the Foreword to this 240-page hardcover by Andrew Fazekas, which is subtitled The True Science Behind the Starship Voyages.

A Christmas Horror Story

DIRECTORS: Grant Harvey, Steven Hoban, Brett Sullivan
WRITERS: James Kee, Sarah Larsen, Doug Taylor, Pascal Trottier
STARRING: William Shatner, George Buza, Rob Archer, Grant Harvey, Steven Hoban, Brett Sullivan

Release date: November 24, 2015

As soon as I saw the cover art for the home video release of A Christmas Horror Story, which features Santa Claus battling Krampus in a design that looks like the people behind Game Of Thrones could have created it, I knew I was going to love this movie. As it turns out, I totally did.

I’m just getting that out of the way right up front.

A Christmas Horror Story is a Christmas horror film that includes the kind of old-school frights we’re used to viewing in October, along with the whimsy we’re used to getting during the yuletide. Imagine if Home Alone was just a tad less endearing and much less slapstick, but ten times more bloody. It looks beautiful for a low budget production, especially one of the horror genre, and has a vibe similar to Trick ‘r Treat, another anthology film I love.

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection Blu-ray Releases

Since there isn’t much home video news to report this week, I’ve decided to make this edition of The Digital Wire a special one. In light of the recent deaths of Leonard Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett this week’s Wire will be devoted to a list of the five best films in the Star Trek franchise starring the legendary Original Series cast available to own on Blu-ray.

Each title provides a link to its corresponding Amazon page so you can order a copy of your very own if you choose (you can also get the 6-film Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection, which comes with a bonus disc). Also, although this is a special edition of the Digital Wire, I’ve still provided a list of this week’s major releases on Blu-ray and DVD, complete with their own purchase links. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power.

Late Late Show Klingon Rap Wayne Brady William Shatner Jonathan Mangum

In honor of two of his favorite things — Black History Month and Star Trek — comedian and TV host Wayne Brady performed a Klingon rap song on Wednesday on TV’s The Late Late Show.

Brady, who has been guest-hosting the CBS late-night talk show all this week, was inspired to do the rap — which actually includes lines in Klingon, the fictional Star Trek language — by that evening’s guest, Mr. William Shatner, aka the original James Tiberius Kirk.

Check out the “Klingon Rap” video here below.
