Holiday Geek Gift Guide: Batman Edition

Put on your capes and cowls, everybody! There’s pine needles on the living room floor, snow on the ground, and a scent of cinnamon in the air. Your dogs and cats are tearing apart wrapping paper, your family’s in town and you can’t stop drinking sparkling cider for some reason. That could only mean one thing, folks, it’s the nondescript religious holiday season! And that means that it’s time to go into credit card debt so that you can show those closest to you that you care, you know? And to make it a little bit easier on you guys, we here at Geeks of Doom have been shoveling our driveways so that we can deliver to you this, The Holiday Geek Gift Guide – Batman Edition! The best bat-gifts possible for the geeks on you gift-giving list!

As you can see, I’ve changed up the intro a smidge, and that’s simply because today we celebrate the holiday in the best way possible, with The Batman. Yes, The Batman. And while it may not make much sense to you that we’re doing this, you fail to realize that Batman makes everything better. In fact, the presence of Batman-centric holiday gift guide on this site makes not only this site better, but also it makes the world better. And isn’t that truly what the holidays are about? Making things better or something like that? Sure, why not! Anyway, it’s been a pretty big year for The Dark Knight, and that will certainly be evidenced by the majority of this list. We’ll also be making it a little easier on you by narrowing this list down by separate topics such as comics (and comic-inspired items), statues, Batman: Year One, and Arkham City. Sure there will be some overlap, but that’s all right because we’re talking about Batman! So let’s start of with the merriest of merries, comic books!

Batman: Year One, the latest direct-to-video animated feature from DC Comics and Warner Home Video, is being released next month on DVD and Blu-ray and the studio has released a clip from the PG-13 rated film. You can watch the video here below.

The brief clip finds a quiet dinner meeting between Falcone and his underlings rudely interrupted by a visit from the Dark Knight, arriving to announce his intentions for the city’s criminal element as only Batman can.

Year One
Directed by Harold Ramis
Starring Jack Black, Michael Cera
Rated PG-13
Release date: June 19, 2009

There are a lot of stock catchphrases that are widely used by people to describe movies that I have grown tired of hearing. Reading a review of a film that is described as a “rollercoaster thrill ride” or a performance is hailed as being a “tour de force” stinks of laziness and unoriginality by the critic. Specifically there are two descriptions that apply to Year One that I am deathly sick of hearing across the board: “Check your brain at the door” and “the actors looked like they had fun making the movie.”

A movie like Year One wasn’t made to be dissected into deeper meaning. Zed (Jack Black) and Oh (Michael Cera) are hunter-gatherers who are kicked out of their village for being worthless and forced into the world on their own. They have a variety of encounters that are loosely based on stories from the Bible. Dumb cavemen weaving in and out of biblical stories. That’s pretty much it. I’d like to be able to go into detail but the movie simply doesn’t provide that opportunity.

Public EnemiesHello, friends. A very happy New Year to you all.

Hopefully by now you’ve all done our hamster wheel routine to work off that excess holiday weight and recovered from any New Year, Same Hangover you might have battled to the bitter end.

To start things off right, EW has a new issue out with a 2009 preview and a whole bunch of images to go with it. Some of them we’ve seen, but most are new, so below we’ve included some of the better ones to check out and mark on that shiny new Hannah Montana calendar you got for Christmas!

Keep in brain that this is just a taste of some of the movies coming along from the article at EW. There’s many, many more movies coming this year that will undoubtedly garner some excitement in you and I and when they do come, we’ll count our goosebumps together — but for now, enjoy this small little preview of some movies you’re either already thrilled for, or maybe you didn’t know about yet.
