Geek Peek: Chris Hemsworth In Costume As Thor

The Insomniac   |

Chris Hemsworth as ThorMIGHTY MJOLNIR!

The first still from the hotly anticipated film adaptation of Marvel Comics’ hammer-slinging hero has been handed down from Asgard!

Check out the image here at right (click for larger view) of Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Thor.

As this one tantalizing picture shows, Thor will be clad in the character’s traditional steel bracer armour with the classic red cape from Jack Kirby’s original designs. This image will hopefully put to rest the fears of fans that the film production would try too hard to ‘contemporize’ the look and feel of the character.

While details about the movie have been harder to come across then a Viking at a salad bar, the cast list has been released and the basic plot has been made public. The Kenneth Branagh-directed feature will star the aforementioned Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (last seen as Kirk’s dad in Star Trek) as the Norse God of Thunder, a mythical warrior who is banished to Earth for his arrogance and is forced to learn what it means to truly be a hero. Rounding out the stellar cast is geek sex icon Natalie Portman (Star Wars, V for Vendetta, AND Harvard educated? Excuse me while I wipe away the drool) as love interest Jane Foster; Hannibal Lector himself Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and British stage and television actor Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s villainous half-brother Loki.

It’s enough to throw a comic book/mythology geek into convulsions of glee. But the real question still remains: When will we get to see Mjolnir, Thor’s mighty hammer?

Thor is set to be released on May 6, 2011.

Head on over to Yahoo! to check out a larger version of the image.

    Wasn’t it Jack Kirby who designed Thor’s costume, not Ditko?

  • Slipstream

    This is top of my list of most anticipated of the Marvel films. Most excited. And yeah, the costume works. Hope the helmet works just as well too.

  • http://geeksofdoom.com Empress Eve

    @Scott, yes, we’ve fixed it. Thanks!

  • Ttandc

    Dude you might want to do your research a little more. You see Thors hammer at the end of Iron Man 2 after the credits.

  • The Insomniac

    Two points.

    1) I seriously dropped the ball on the Kirby/Ditko comment, and for that I apoligize. In fact, I would be the first to say I deserve to be flogged for it. Seriously. Flogged.

    2) I have heard the rumours that you will see Mjolnir at the end of Iron Man 2, but until I actually see the movie, I can’t really say whether or not you will see the hammor of Thor in IM2. I hope it’s true, but I don’t want to make claims based on rumours.

    You know why I love this site? Because you guys are great at keeping all of us on our toes. Thanks for the awesome comments.

    PS. Again, the Kirby/Ditko thing? Flogged. Cat’O'Nine Tails, tied to a trunk. FLOGGED.

    thors hammer – end of iron man 2 – confirmed awesomness

  • Ttandc

    Confirmed twice but I understand if you need to check yourself :)

  • http://geeksofdoom.com Empress Eve

    @Ttandc
    We haven’t seen the end of IRON MAN 2 credits, so you can’t fault the writer for this. How would he be able to fact-check for a movie that didn’t even come out? Also, the press screenings do NOT have the post-credits scene. I know there was a video going around with the scene, but it was immediately removed because it was apparently a leak. We didn’t cover the story 1) because it was taken off the internet so quickly and 2) that’s serious spoiler material. Lastly, this is a story about the THOR movie, he pondered when we’ll get to see Thor’s hammer is THIS movie, officially. We don’t want to see a bootlegged version of it quickly from another movie that’s not even out yet. We want to see Chris Hemsworth with the hammer!

    @ Empress Eve
    This story was released on April 30th, Iron Man 2 Came out April 29th with many cinemas having midnight sessions on April 28th. So how exactly can you say that the movie wasn’t out yet?

    @ Insomniac
    Dude, I’m not trying to offend you, you wondered when we’d see the hammer and I gave a simple answer.

  • http://geeksofdoom.com Empress Eve

    @Ttandc
    It doesn’t come out here the U.S. until this Friday, so we here in the United States haven’t seen it.

  • Ttandc

    @Eve

    And your ability to contact somebody outside the US is hampered by what exactly? If your serious about covering geek news then I would have thought that keeping tabs on the first release of movies, no matter what country they start in, would have been important.

    The internet is viewed by all countries. You can not expect your viewers to know that you compromise your stories for the sake of one country. Perhaps you should remember this before offending your readers.

  • http://geeksofdoom.com Empress Eve

    @Ttandc
    I didn’t mean to offend anyone. We did not cover the “news” because it was LEAKED illegally and taken off the internet immediately. We chose NOT to cover it because it’s a SPOILER and that would mean that 1) we’d be spoiling the movie, as some other sites did; and 2) it would mean that even we’d have to be spoiled by watching/reading about the post-credits scene. Above all, we are FANS of these movies and we want to experience first-hand like everyone else. Also, we are a U.S.-based site, and it would be unreasonable to ask that we keep tabs on all release dates all over the world. Newspapers and magazines don’t do so, how can a small oparation like us do so? It’s not realistic. Again, YOU told the writer to do more research, when he was stating he wanted to see Thor’s hammer is THIS movie – THOR! You are the one bringing up ANOTHER movie not being referred to here.

  • http://geeksofdoom.com Dave3

    Hey @Ttandc. When WE get a chance to see the movie, we’ll comment on whatever the fuck we want about whatever we happen to see in it.

    Take your trolling elsewhere.

    Wow….things have advanced in my absence….

    This is confirm that YES!!!! You do get to see Thor’s hammer at the end of IM2 and it’s every square inch of awesome that one would suspect…..

    Dude, I didn’t take the whole hammer thing personally at all! I just said that I didn’t want to comment on something I had heard but hadn’t been confirmed. This site is about the celebration about the beauty and coolness of all things geek, and Thor is about as awesome as you can get. So, as the writer of the article, I thus declare a truce. I haven’t even been back to this page since the first round of comments. Now, everyone shake hands, and talk about how much we all absolutely love THOR!!!!!!!!
