The Geeks of Doom   |  @   |

In February 2005, co-publishers Empress Eve and Dave3 launched Geeks of Doom with the goal of bringing geeky entertainment news and features to the masses and to create a haven where the independent geek could voice his/her opinion.

GoD has the inside skinny on the latest geek-related news, comic book, movie, video game, and music reviews, as well as interviews with industry geeks, contests, and giveaways, and articles about everything else that shines under our geeky sun.

We write about what we love! We ARE the comic readers, we are the movie goers, we are the target market. We’re able to write from the perspective of the average unbiased fan, because we ARE those fans.

GoD is independently owned and operated by Empress Eve and Dave3, both of whom have full-time day jobs and a mortgage to pay.

Dr. Zaius

Danny Torkel (Dr. Zaius)

Contributor

About: Danny has been enamored with movies since he was young, especially in the horror genre. Sneaking around and staying up late to watch horror movies without parental notice, Danny fondly remembers the good ol’ days of video store browsing, and his father became an enabler, letting him watch IT at age 8, The Omen at age 9, and taking him to see From Dusk Till Dawn at 12. His college dorm room walls were adorned by horror movie posters like Halloween, the Evil Dead films and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Aside from horror, Danny considers himself a film historian and has seen over 3/4 of the Oscar winners for Best Picture. Danny is a history teacher by day and movie/TV reviewer by night. DwayneD

Dwayne De Freitas (DwayneD)

Contributor, Host – Violent Delights: A Westworld Podcast & The Drill Down

About: Dwayne was probably born too early. Strategy-focused and solution oriented, he doesn’t wax poetic about technology– he simply wants it to work harder for him because it’s rarely where he “‹wants it to be. He’s hell bent on figuring out ways to stop the sentient-android apocalypse”‹, but loves Google Home and Amazon Alexa all the same.”‹

A “‹freelance online “‹market”‹er and IOT researcher based in Boulder, Dwayne started his career immersed in the intellectual property and technology space at the law firm of Skadden Arps, later taking his research and analysis skills to Brown Rudnick. He supported the Business and Legal division at MTV Networks before managing the Compliance and Special Projects department at a Boulder-based ad agency”‹ and then working as marketing director for a couple of Boulder-based tech start ups. “‹”‹”‹”‹

“‹”‹Technology, however, is never the entire story. Our tools change us, and domesticate us, forcing us to tell new stories about ourselves. This is where Dwayne’s criticism is applied to books, film and television in addition to gadgets and gizmos.

His deep interest in the way gadgets and gizmos augment our reality, alongside the manner in which revenue models are tied to The Attention Economy are what fuels the “business-focused/user-first” perspective he lends to Geeks of Doom.

You can find his work around the site, and his voice on The Drill Down and Violent Delights.

Favorite Movies: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Moonstruck, The Incredibles, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Prestige, Oldboy, Alien, Aliens, Amadeus, Inception, Interstellar, Arrival, Star Wars 4&5, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Beauty and the Beast (1991)…

Waerloga69

Gary Makries (Waerloga69)

Contributor

About: Introduced to Kiss live in concert, Batman comics and the original Star Wars all in the same month in 1977, my inner geek reared it’s ugly head and I was never the same again. My first job was in a comic, gaming and book store, solidifying my need for all things nerdy. Hundreds of AD&D campaigns and thousands of fantasy books later, I am able to hold my own in almost any geeky convo. My everyday suit and tie attire hides a plethora of piercings and a crap ton of tattoos. I’m always willing to try anything (book/comic wise, you perv). I spent almost twenty years in the book business (my first love) at several different companies and also trained under an actual chef, so I’ve got some skills in the kitchen, too. I’m red-headed and Scottish so if I seem angry, it’s because I am trying hard to earn an actual Red Lantern Ring. My goal in life is to start my own comic and book cult, er…I mean store.

Favorite Authors: Umberto Eco, Jim Butcher, R.A. Salvatore, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, George R.R. Martin, Charles Dickens, Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child, Raymond E. Feist, and many more

Favorite Beer: Shiner Bock (other beers cannot compare)
Bad Habits: Referring to my employees as minions, buying tech toys constantly, calling people “chief” or “bro”

Kevin Apgar (FunWithDeadTrees)

About: I have a 40-something body fitted with a young adult’s brain. What this means is that I totally geek out over science fiction and fantasy but if I jump around and fist-pump the sky too much over the next great teaser trailer, I’ll throw out my back. Such is life.

I’m a husband, a dad, a photographer, a reader, a listener, and a 20-year blogger at kapgar.com. I finally found a job that lets me wear jeans and that I love going to every day. And I wish that I did not sell my Ibanez EX-160 nearly 20 years ago. I miss that guitar.

Maximus Prime

Max Pfeffer (Maximus Prime)

Contributor

About: Max grew up in the small college town of New Paltz, New York. Stoogeypedia

Michael Percoco (Stoogeypedia)

Contributor

About: Growing up in Brooklyn, New York in the 1970s, I was fortunate enough to be in the hub of arguably the greatest era of kitsch, coolness and pop culture. I cultivated all the hubris I absorbed from that time to become a watchful knower and see-er of all things pop culture. From knowing Curly Howard’s Social Security number, to Jimi Hendrix’s blood type, to Alan Alda’s train collection to Led Zeppelin’s preference of certain brands of hotel soap, there isn’t much that this popped cultured mind doesn’t know, hence my moniker “Stoogeypedia”. Reading, music, film, anything and everything of that ilk raises my antenna for full absorption in the extensive file cabinets in my brain. NOTHING gets by me or missed when it comes to trivial facts or information. I felt like an outcast for years with being imbued with these “special” powers. Who I asked myself, WHO would care enough about all this? Where, I asked myself, WHERE would I go to find a proper forum to wax about all things vox populi (Latin meaning : “For the people”)? On a cold rainy night, after walking in confusion for weeks, I used my last ounce of energy as I trudged up the steps to the door of the headquarters of GoD. I collapsed as I rang the bell. Rescued by the Empress and Dave 3, I knew I had found my home, my calling, my place in a culturally pop filled society. And thus, the saga of Stoogeypedia was born”¦

Favorite Writers: Lester Bangs, Cameron Crowe, Charles Schultz, Bill Watterson, John Cleese, Chevy Chase, Frank Jacobs

Favorite TV Shows: Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Honeymooners, The Sopranos, Smallville, Match Game ’73, Old Saturday Night Live, All in the Family
Craziest Celebrity Meeting Moment: I once met David Johansen (The New York Dolls, Buster Poindexter, cab driver in “Scrooged”) and mistook him for Tom Waits. Don’t ask.
Craziest Moment Period: Being on a game show (the remake of “Press Your Luck”) and hitting NO Whammy’s and being a winner! The picture of me here PROVES it lol!

About: A former journalist turned videographer/editor, I went from writing about the craft I love to doing the craft I love for a living. I’ve always been a big movie buff, but working in television as a video editor has given me a deep appreciation for all the tech work that goes into film making and rarely gets the deserved amount of credit. I like to review movies and video games mostly, especially if I’m not part of their intended demographic (rarely the case with a video game). Mostly I’m a proud geek.

DocBrown

Beth Brown (DocBrown)

Additional Contributor

About: Beth Brown learned that writing pretty good books won’t bring you a decent paycheck, but it can give a warm, fuzzy feeling and a 12-pound crystal literary award that you have to dust every week. A product of Olde Virginia, she’s a true Southern Belle at heart and enjoys telling the world the (sometimes ugly) truth about itself with a smile on her face. Following in the footsteps of her best/worst role model Hunter S. Thompson, Beth became a legit doctor in 2011 thanks to a mail-order church and the money she saved by skipping coffee for a week.

Bobby Cooper (Zenestex)

Additional Contributor

About: Zenestex (Bobby Cooper) was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. He firmly believes that the Arctic Circle begins somewhere near Georgia and that its populace lives under the secret, tyrannical rule of ice dragons. These frosty overlords have mind-flayed their unknowing subjects into believing the “˜change of seasons is awesome’ fable. Bobby’s prides himself on being open-minded; he’ll entertain other theories on why humans venture into the frigid wastelands north of the 30th Parallel. But he knows the real truth.

Bobby swings his nunchucks through a life filled with pop culture diversions. While he managed to focus on being an adult long enough to Forrest Gump his way through college and start a career, he doesn’t even pretend anymore: he doesn’t wanna grow up, he’s a Toys R Us kid. Should he ever accept that he’s a decade or two past adolescence, he wants to be a fiction writer, or a comic artist, or a NASA engineer, or a politician, or a strength coach, or a…well, it’s irrelevant. It’ll change next week anyway. The point is that he loves geekdom and he loves writing about it here at GoD.

Dave Gonzales (Da7e)

About: Dave Gonzales is the name of the guy who makes those little plastic figures of Mexican-American stereotypes called “Homies.” Dave Gonzales is a talented guitarist. Dave Matthews has a crappy band, and all that made a certain number-less person un-Googleable. Da7e Matthew Gonzales works in cable television for MTV Networks. He podcasts weekly at OpKino.com and does a special Legend of Korra podcast at RepublicCityDispatch.com. He tweets a lot. He had a production company for five years where he made shorts, commercials, music videos, TV shows and one gay romantic comedy this one time (that’s on Netflix now!). He has written for online publications ranging from IDontLikeYouInThatWay.com (gossip!) to MentalFloss.com (facts!) with a ton of movie blogs in-between. Marvel threatened him once. Michael Bay has twice said he’s full of crap. He collected all the Spider-Man titles until his mother threw them all away in the late 90s and he had a ten-year temper-tantrum. Now, he’s reading all the Spider-Man comic books again on a monthly basis. He makes lo-fi music compulsively. He had a webcomic once that still lives at DosFactoum.com. He likes cartoons and smoking. His spirit animal is the Mongoose.

Like a personal secretary hired to take the blame when you fart in an elevator.
Like a three-cheese pizza and one of the cheeses is your hot teacher from high school.
That’s what Kurt Isensee is like.
Fun. He’s fun, in case you weren’t sure.
Fun.

Likes: Kurt likes everything. Except shitty stuff. If you like shitty stuff, you’ll not find a close friend in Kurt. Here’s one example: If you loyally watch “Two Broke Girls “, keep moving. Saying that you’re watching it for “irony” will not excuse you, in this case. If you’re watching if for masturbation fodder, then ok, fine, whatever, but please keep it to yourself.

Nickname: Kurt needed to come up with a nickname to join Geeks of Doom, and the only nickname he ever had was “The Iceman”, because part of his surname sounds like “ice.” He probably should’ve spent more time thinking up another handle, as The Iceman sounds rather pretentious and aloof, but what’s done is done.

Wait. A bit of an epiphany. Perhaps it’s more apt than he thought.

Cashmere Smoking Jacket

Peter Jubinsky (Cashmere Smoking Jacket)

Additional Contributor

About: When prompted to describe Peter (the emotional child behind the Cashmere Smoking Jacket pseudonym), one respondent offered the following rejoinder: “Peter is a dead skeleton living in an abandoned lot in Bushwick, all of whose bones and comics are being gnawed at by feral raccoons,” which seems about right in spirit, if not in the strictest, like, “factual” sense. When not, ummm, doing that -having his dessicated remains ravenously consumed by thieving creatures, that is- he is occupied by tiresome mental gymnastics, like “trying to figure it all out.” He promises to let you know just as soon as he knows. There is other stuff, for sure, about him, but he can’t imagine why anybody would want to hear all that noise.

And but so, in lieu of a trite autobiography that was composed in the third person, but just clearly the work of the author himself, here is a non-binding and decidedly non-comprehensive list of things and people he’s fond of that is in no particular order, except sometimes alphabetical order:

Cartoons That Make Life Worth Living: Futurama, Tales of Mere Existence, Storycorps, Venture Bros., X-Men: The Animated Series
Movies That He Would Watch Anytime, Anyplace: 28 Days Later, Attack the Block, Brain Candy, Chinatown, Let the Right One In, On the Edge, Rock and Roll High School, Take Shelter, Wendy and Lucy, Wild Zero
Music That Warms the Cockles of His Black Heart: Animal Collective, Cat Power, The Clash, The Dead Milkmen, Jay-Z, Marnie Stern, Milo, New Order, Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, Tom Waits, X, The XX
People Who Write Pretty Things, As Far As He’s Concerned: Al Burian, Albert Camus, Patricia Highsmith, Joe Hill, Jason Lutes, Jason, Haruki Murakami, Chris Onstad, Joe Sacco, Adrian Tomine, David Foster Wallace, Julia Wertz
Words That Make Him Smile, When He Feels Like It: bellicose, charlatan, defenestrate, dysphemism, garrulous, miasmic, pestilence, quaff, scurrilous
Favorite Baseball: who said baseball!? Wanna talk about it?!

Ryan Midnight

Ryan Miller (Ryan Midnight)

Additional Contributor

About: Ryan has been a devotee of the silver screen and an avid follower of genre cinema his entire life, having his fragile little mind warped at a young age by consistent viewings of Star Wars and countless hours staring at the garrish VHS covers in the horror, sci-fi and action sections of the local video store. The transformation was completed during a three-year stint at Blockbuster followed by six years selling Hong Kong movie imports. Ryan has been reviewing movies “professionally” since 2004, and his contributions can be found in the pages of The Scarecrow Movie Guide, Screem Magazine and multiple websites. He is equally knowledgeable about video games and can fake his way pretty good through most comic book conversations. He could probably survive the first wave of the zombie apocalypse, but would rather live in a technology-overrun dystopian future. When he is not ingesting the latest uncut release of one of the video nasties, Ryan is the SEO Manager for a network of local news websites, providing guidance on search engine and social media visibility.

Favorite Movies: Halloween, The Thing, Battle Royale, The Empire Strikes Back, The Big Lebowski, A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors, Blade Runner, A Bay of Blood, Red Sonya, Terminator 2
Favorite Comics and Graphic Novels: Fables, Garth Ennis’ Punisher, Transmetropolitan, The Walking Dead, Preacher,

The Insomniac

Additional Contributor

About: Abandoned by his jet setting parents in Madagascar as a baby, The Insomniac was raised as a feral child by a family of sloths until his sixteenth birthday. He once crossed swords with Craig T. Nelson at midnight across the rooftops of Maine.

He once spent ten years in a Tibetan Monastery meditating on the collected works of Asterix and Obselisk.
