Sony Decides Not To Help Sam Rockwell & ‘Moon’ Reach Oscar Dreams

The Movie God   |  @   |

Moon

If you didn’t catch it, not too long ago a movement was started to get Sam Rockwell an Oscar nomination for his work in one of this year’s most popular independent films, Duncan JonesMoon (Read: Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It: Get Sam Rockwell An Oscar Nomination For “˜Moon’!).

Where the movie was exalted by many, it wasn’t even seen by many more, and because of this, it appears that Sony Pictures Classics isn’t willing to shell out the monetary backing required to campaign for a movie. They’ve selected the films that they want considered, they’ve sent out all of the screeners, and Moon is just not part of the party. This doesn’t mean that the film still won’t get the nominations many think it deserves, but without the right people seeing it, the challenge becomes all the more difficult. The reason for this decision seems to balance on the cost of screeners: Moon isn’t out here in the United States yet, so Sony doesn’t want to have to spend the cash to watermark a bunch of screeners to send out.

Movie Review: ‘Avatar’ 3D

avatar posterAvatar
Directed by James Cameron
Staring Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Release date: December 18, 2009

James Cameron‘s Avatar has been in development for more years than some of its viewers have been alive. This has been a passion project for Cameron, and much like Peter Jackson’s King Kong, it’s nice to see him finally complete the film, if only so he can move on to other projects I’d like to see (cough, Battle Angel, cough). Now that it’s out, is the movie worth the wait and the hype we’ve gone through before its release?

Paralyzed ex-Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) finds himself in a unique situation when he is given the chance to take over for his recently deceased twin brother and take part in the Avatar program. The goal of the Avatar program is to explore the planet of Pandora and increase diplomatic relations with the indigenous population of the planet, a group of people called the Na’vi. The Avatar program allows humans to walk around in genetically engineered Na’vi bodies, which they then use to explore the planet and interact with the locals. The Na’vi are tall humanoids with blue skin and mostly cat-like features that are very reminiscent of Native Americans in their culture. They are very in tune with the land, and as with the Native Americans, their village is sitting on top of a large amount of valuable metal that a large corporation wants to get their hands on. Jake is able to take his brother’s place on the team because they are genetically duplicate, so he is shipped off to Pandora, even though he’s not a scientist. The company wants to put his military training to use by having him get intel on the Na’vi village so they can invade and remove them. Of course, Jake is able to gain a place in the tribe, where he comes to identify with them and eventually seeks to protect them.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Extract’

The Movie God   |  @   |

extract blu-rayExtract
Blu-ray Edition
Directed by Mike Judge
Starring Jason Batemen, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, Kristen Wiig, Clifton Collins Jr., J.K. Simmons, David Koechner
Buena Vista Home Entertainment
Release Date: December 22, 2009

Mike Judge hasn’t had the best of luck when it comes to his films. Whether it’s his now cult classic Office Space, Idiocracy, or his latest film, Extract, it always seems like he has problems getting the backing that he needs or the proper attention from movie goers that he deserves. Another trend that’s typical in Judge’s movies, is that they’re all fantastic, so I was excited to finally get to see Extract for myself.

Extract tells the story of Joel (Jason Bateman), the owner and manager of Reynold’s Extract, a company that makes those little bottles of flavor extracts such as vanilla, peppermint, and perhaps even cookies and cream. Joel is desperately seeking a large company to come along and buy him out so he can retire and hopefully revive the deceased intimacy between him and his wife (if he’s not home by 8PM on the button, she will have her sweatpants on, and he never gets to have sex) Suzie (Kristen Wiig). When Joel discovers that General Mills is suddenly very interested in buying the company, excitement runs high, but a streak of bad luck brings everything to a dead halt, much like his production line often is. Reynold’s hires a lot of simpletons and job placement recruits, and when these newcomers become distracted, the bitter long-time employees refuse to do anything about it, which in turn causes the line to back up. One day this occurs and sets off a chain of bad events that culminates in the unfortunate testicular dismemberment of an employee named Step (Clifton Collins Jr.). Not only does this incident cause severe complications in the sale of the company, it’s also not long before a drop-dead gorgeous new temp employee named Cindy (Mila Kunis) shows up with devious plans to seduce Joel and Step at the same time with hopes of walking away with a massive piece of the expected multi-million dollar settlement payout. This leaves Joel stressed and confused and unsure what to do with only his unmotivated default best friend Dean (Ben Affleck) offering illegal substance options and his always-nagging neighbor Nathan (David Koechner) there to make things that much worse for him.

Marvel Shareholders Approve Merger with Disney
space
Henchman21   |  @   |

Remember all those months ago when it was announced that Disney had plans to buy Marvel for a few billion dollars? [Read Disney To Acquire Marvel Entertainment For $4 Billion]

Well, the two companies took a major step towards that merger today, when Marvel shareholders approved the plan to merge the two companies. The cost of the merger, based on stock prices from yesterday, will have an estimated value of 4.3 billion dollars.

Of course there’s still the step of going through the Securities and Exchange Commission, but my guess is that it won’t be a problem, and the merger will be completed today as Marvel expects. It looks like we will start the New Year with the House of Ideas being owned by the House of Mouse. It will be interesting to see if any major changes are made at Marvel in 2010, or if Disney will let them do their own thing and cash big fat movie checks in a few years.

Peter Jackson Knighted In New Zealand, Shall Now Be Known As Sir
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

Peter Jackson

Peter Jackson is best known as the man behind one of the biggest cinematic trilogies of all time: The Lord of the Rings. As we all know, Jackson is a born and bred New Zealander, and due to its never ending beauty and perfectly other-worldly look, he crafted his wonderful adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s vision there, creating the perfect Middle Earth. The trilogy went on earn itself an incredible 30 Academy Award nominations, with 17 Oscar statues coming through in the end. Since then, Jackson has become one of the most recognizable and desired directors working today, and it was only a matter of time before some major accolades would find him.

It’s being reported that Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, who is New Zealand’s Head of State due to it formerly being a British colony, has officially named Jackson to their yearly honors’ list, officially making him Sir Peter Jackson. He joins an elite group that includes Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Elton John, Sir Alfred Hitchcock, and honorary representative Steven Spielberg.
