Superhero Economics: A Financial Comparison Between Batman and Spider-Man

Batman/Spider-Man Infographic

When dealing with superheroes, it usually comes down to who would beat who in a one-on-one fight. Good guys, bad guys—we just can’t help but wonder who’d prove to be the best of them all.

But how often have you wondered about the financial status of your favorite comic book characters? Not very often, in all likelihood. And if it is often, it’s time for you to take a vacation. Somewhere nice. I recommend Maui. It’s lovely.

Anyway…a new infographic called Superhero Economics does just that, comparing the money earned and money spent numbers for the regular everyday gentlemen who become DC Comics’ Batman and Marvel’s Spider-Man, Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker. We all know who would win in a money fight between the two characters, but the comparison looks at who the men are, what they do, how much they spend, and, perhaps most interestingly, how many years it would take them to make the amount of money all of their movies combined have made in worldwide box office.

Check out the Superhero Economics infographic below.

  1. There’s no way Peter Parker’s “ensemble” would ever be $313…just saying. He’s a clearance rack guy all the way.

  2. What I would like to see is Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne side by side comparison.

  5. Peter Parker graduated from NYU over a decade ago and currently works on the design team at Horizon Labs, where he makes enough money to afford his own spacious downtown apartment. How about some statistics that aren’t from the 1970s?

  6. Spiderman wins in movie grosses if you add the two new movie grosses, The amazing spiderman and the dark knight rises, spiderman has the lead by 50 million

  9. should be spiderman and superman they’re both taking pictures and wears eyeglasses and both orphans. then batman should be compared to ironman, both are billionaires and..yes, orphans too.

  10. That’s not fair play. Compare him with Iron Man.

  11. If you compare Batman and Iron Man, Iron Man wins in cost. Batman goes up to an even 682, 415, 600 million $ and Iron Man crosses a billion dollars. If you wanna watch the cost of becoming Batman then check out my video on YouTube: 655Moosa

  13. Note that that’s including his glasses, which aren’t exactly cheap even if you get basic ones – though if your prescription doesn’t change and you take good care of them, they can last several years easily. Everything else is $148 total, including his shoes. Admittedly, that doesn’t include socks and underwear, but those both probably came out of those bagged multipacks where you get six for ten bucks. I definitely don’t see him spending twenty dollars on a tee, though, but considering he’s wearing either a polo or button down in the picture…

  14. so in other words since batman cannot beat Spider man in an all out drag out death match(with no time to prepare they had to find away to have Spider man beaten and what better way then with money, lol

    talk about pathetic.

    Comment by letummorsmortis — August 30, 2012 @ 7:31 pm

  15. because Batman can be beaten by spiderman and the batman fans wanted away to have him beat spider man so they chose money because if they did it the right way with it between Iron man and batman Iron man would most likely kick his can as well.

seeing as Iron man iirc has a space station a well and yet Batman doesn’t so Stark would have won that as well and they cannot have people beating the batman all the time, haha

    Comment by letummorsmortis — August 30, 2012 @ 7:36 pm

  16. because they want to beat Spider man in any way they can that is why.

    Comment by letummorsmortis — August 30, 2012 @ 7:38 pm

  17. you know they cannot do that. because it is never about a fair fight when it comes to the batman, lol.

bats is beaten by spiderman in every way other then money.

    Comment by letummorsmortis — August 30, 2012 @ 7:40 pm

  18. you think they care?
they don’t like fair fights when it comes to batman and spierman.. come to think of it I haven’t known a dc fan to ever fight with real or even up to date facts when it is Vs. Marvel and this piece just proves it.

    Comment by letummorsmortis — August 30, 2012 @ 7:42 pm

  19. This is clearly made by a spiderman fan…and one thing not mentioned in this that is Spiderman has got a gifted super power whereas Batman has got no gifted super power he is a self made Superhero.

    Comment by Akshay Pawar — September 2, 2012 @ 9:36 am

  20. God some of you people are idiots.

When I was younger I preferred Spider-man but now I’m older I prefer Batman, the reason is because the Batman stories are more mature, darker, set more for an adult. Whereas Spider-man are usually more fun, immature and set for kids (Before someone has a dig there, I aren’t saying there isn’t an adult storyline for Spider-man but just the majority of them are kid friendly).

Also, either one of Batman Vs Spider-man could win in a fight, it depends on how it was written, simple as that. I can think up many numerous scenario’s where either of them win.

And that’s what boils down to some people being idiots, believing that one could beat the other in reality and also saying that it boils down to money why Batman wins.

This isn’t a competition, it’s a comparison on the economics as the title states.

Also by the way if anybody wants to snarl back at me and say it’s only because of Christopher Nolan or whatever that I like Batman more or has a dark story etc etc is wrong. I don’t like the Nolan movies. (Well, I didn’t mind Batman Begins, The Dark Knight was crap and I couldn’t have a care about The Dark Knight Rises so haven’t even watched it).

    Comment by Adie Stone — September 3, 2012 @ 8:19 am

  21. When we are talking about fights sure Spidy will kick the crap out of batman but when we are talking about money they chose a rich playboy Vs. a person who wasn’t born with a diamond spoon in their mouth it shows that the batman fans are getting desperate to find ways to beat spiderman with no way he could come close to winning this type of contest.

They should have had the batman face off against Tony Stark who has no super powers and is also rich which is why I said what I said.

you are right there are dark story lines for Spiderman, the clone saga ring a bell for anyone?

    Comment by letummorsmortis — September 4, 2012 @ 5:43 am

  22. sure bats has no super powers but the way fans tote him its as if he is a god that can not be beaten and when he is beaten it is as if it never happened after all those fans to use the same slogan “No one can beat the batman”.

though the batman does have a super power ‘the batman luck’ where you can break him in half and he some how manages to bounce back?

at least Spiderman has a reason he can bounce back from devastating wounds is because he has super powers.

however the real Spiderman has lost his leg in one of the story line arks and hasn’t grown one back.

though I bet if he was the batman his leg would grow back all on its own and he would be back up in the fight in no time!

why? because no one can beat the batman!

want a fair battle between two super hero(with no powers)s when it comes to money then make it be between Ironman and Batman and not the stupid poor excuse of an tempt like batman fan boy (aka: The Movie God) did which was clearly the only way this person could have the batman beat Spiderman.

    Comment by letummorsmortis — September 4, 2012 @ 5:54 am

  23. Okay, I’ve seen a lot of people ask, “Why do Batman vs. Spider-Man? Of course Batman wins in an economic battle.” Well, yeah. That was their intention. There had to be a clear and easy winner as this is just a light-hearted, just for fun feature; it’s not meant to be a tooth and nail battle at all costs. Personally, I think Batman vs. Superman would’ve been better. It would be pretty similar to vs. Spider-Man as Superman also works for a newspaper, and it would make a lot more sense since cents, just kidding, since Batman vs. Superman is a common theme in discussions and comic book media. Plus, it would keep the match-up in the same universe.

  25. Aren’t his eyes okay at this point in his life, though? I’m sure he’d be glasses-less after being bitten by the radioactive spider, he would just wear fake glasses to look less imposing out-of-suit. Fake glasses can be very cheap, think less than $10 if you’re like me or Peter and you know how to shop around. My prescription glasses are expensive as hell, though, think twice as expensive as his.

  26. Batman pays for upkeep and modifications to the Justice League’s space station, if you really wanna get into it. Don’t be a dumb fanboy, they’re just comparing the monetary difference between the two characters. I’m a huge Dark Knight fan but I’m more happy with Parker’s financial situation, it’s more impressive to live on a budget than without one at all.

    Comment by Nicholas Gatewood — October 9, 2012 @ 4:24 am

  27. Stop being such a butthurt crybaby, Parker’s lifestyle is way more impressive and there’s no victory at all. Plus, if you wanna talk budgets you should consider the fact that Wayne pays for the Justice League Watchtower. That’s waaay more impressive a jump up than going from college student to professional scientist.

    Comment by Nicholas Gatewood — October 9, 2012 @ 4:26 am

  28. Your butthurt levels are palpable.

    Comment by Nicholas Gatewood — October 9, 2012 @ 4:27 am

  29. Ahhhh, now you sound like a small child. That explains everything, including why you’re so butthurt about all this. You’re an imbecile and you’ve tainted this page’s comment section.

    Comment by Nicholas Gatewood — October 9, 2012 @ 4:29 am

  30. Iron Man pays for Avengers Mansion, the butler Jarvis, most of the technology/labs. Tony Stark/Bruce Banner makes a bit more sense.

    Comment by Branden Myers — October 16, 2012 @ 5:55 pm

  31. Clark Kent is a reporter, not a photographer.

    Comment by Branden Myers — October 16, 2012 @ 5:56 pm

  32. Really, if you look at it another way, it could be said Spidey won this matchup. All the money, gadgets and special training Batman has, and his movie still barely beats Spidey’s in grosses – Spidey even pulls ahead if you count the latest movies in each series. Or another way to word it, Batman only improved his value by a factor of 19, while Spidey improved his by a factor of 49.923.

And that’s not even counting the fact that the above numbers are for 6 Batman movies vs 3 Spidey movies.

    Comment by Graham Tribble — October 20, 2012 @ 9:17 am

  33. Are you just going to go on every comment and go LOL BATMAN WINS BECAUSE FANBOYS

    Seriously dude.

    Come on.

    Seriously.

  36. Why was the graphic altered to show that Bruce Wayne owed no taxes? If you look at the graphic on the H&R Block Website you linked to, Wayne’s taxes owed are shown as $17,000,000. What’s the point of pointing to the source if you’re not going with what the source said?

  40. I am a fan off both world DC and Marvel. Batman vs Spiderman movies well Batman kicked ass all the way as Sam Rami will tell you him self lol but Year 2012 best movie was Avengers and 2nd was Dark Knight Rises but seriously new spiderman movie was big fucking wackass shit.

    Comment by Ryan — February 3, 2013 @ 10:33 pm

  41. reporter, photographer, whatever, they both work for the news paper… and is a reporter for a newspaper really called a reporter? I thought it was called a journalist. Reporters are the people on tv.

    Comment by Krystal Koehne — February 5, 2013 @ 12:00 pm

  42. Reporters and photographers provide two related but very distinct services. While reporters can take pictures, they usually don’t…which the original poster claimed. Clark is a college trained journalist, where as Peter started off as a high schooler taking pictures of himself. Reporter and journalist are synonyms.

    Comment by Branden Myers — February 6, 2013 @ 3:26 pm

  43. Except they have him buying Ralph Lauren glasses, and Peter Parker ain’t the type of guy to get brand name glasses! He’d get the most basic brand possible which would take the price down to closer to $100.
And I’d be surprised if he paid $55 for shoes, he’d be the type of guy that buys $20-$30 shoes because they are the cheapest option.
