Prometheus

When movies make money, the studios behind them make sequels. This is no secret. And with the summer’s biggest movies now behind us, it’s time to start looking at which of the movies we’ve seen released over the course of the past few months might be getting sequels.

Some are obvious, while others might come as a bit of a surprise. Continue reading to see what studios are looking at for potential sequels and which talent is already locked in.

The biggest movies of the summer were The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, Men in Black III, and The Dark Knight Rises. We know sequels to The Avengers and Spider-Man are on the way, though another round of stand-alone superhero flicks from Marvel will be released before Avengers assemble once again. The Spidey sequel has already been scheduled for 2014. The Dark Knight Rises ends Christopher Nolan’s run, and it’s expected that Warner Brothers will soon reboot the franchise with a new director and actors, though it’s unknown when that might happen.

The wildcard is Men in Black IV. We’ve already heard it’s something Sony wants, but the movie would cost so much to make and significant chunks need to be paid to people like producer Steven Spielberg and star Will Smith that they’re not sure they want to risk making another one. Still, considering how well the third movie did ($620 million worldwide), it will be hard to not make at least one more.

Some of the more surprising potential sequels would be Prometheus 2, Ted 2, American Pie 5, and Snow White and the Huntsman 2.

Prometheus was a sorta prequel to director Ridley Scott’s Alien, and doesn’t at all feel like a movie you’d expect a sequel to (despite the fact that many sequels to Alien were produced). But Scott is apparently excited to do another one and is developing it right now with stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace already signed on for a sequel. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof, on the other hand, won’t likely be writing this one.

Family Guy and American Dad! creator Seth MacFarlane’s live-action directorial debut, Ted, is a raunchy R-rated comedy—something that doesn’t often thrive at the box office—that somehow found a way to throw down big numbers. A sequel isn’t a sure bet, but it is being pondered at least. Whether MacFarlane would return to direct the sequel is also unknown, but he said at Comic-Con that he would be open to it.

Speaking of successful raunchy R-rated comedies, you’d have trouble finding better than the American Pie franchise. Some thought it to be a risky decision to make a fourth film in the franchise, American Reunion, almost a decade after the third had been released. Win or lose it was assumed that it would be the closing chapter of those characters’ story, but when you make over $233 million worldwide, it’s hard not to at least consider what other stories there are to tell.

And then there’s Snow White and the Huntsman. A movie that did all right at the box office overall, but did not fare so well critically. Paired with the recent scandal involving star Kristen Stewart and director Rupert Sanders a sequel seemed like quite the stretch, but it looks like Universal is still looking into it, hiring David Koepp to work on the screenplay. Stewart is already in line to star in a sequel should they make it, but Sanders is not yet attached, so it’s safe to assume a new director would likely be brought in.

Which of these sequels do you want to see happen?

I’d honestly love to see all these happen. But, I’m a huge fan of the American series so that’s definitely a top choice. Also TED 2 would be freakin’ sweet.

    U like Twilight, don’t u?

I loved American pie 4, fixed the horrible mess that was the wedding but I would also like to see the series go out on a high. The not sure if another would work. AP4 felt like us revising the old days again and another could not replicate that feeling. Leave alone and find a new franchise.
